One of the great things about the Commonwealth of Kentucky is that its love of basketball does not just extend to the major universities. In addition to the Cats and the Cards, basketball traditions exist at Western Kentucky, Murray State, Transylvania, Northern Kentucky and many other schools. One of those schools is the alma mater of my father, Berea College. The man who made that school’s tradition passed away this weekend as NAIA Hall of Famer Roland Wierwille passed away at the age of 70. Wierwille coached Berea from 1972-2005, helping the College make the national tournament on a few different occasions and building a tradition of excellence at the College. At a special College that is one of the truly unique places in modern higher education, Wierwille was a pillar of the College’s principles for many years. His presence will be missed at Berea and in the state’s basketball life as a whole.
