No woman you know would ask the question, “What’s the sexiest thing a southern belle can wear to a football tailgate?” In fairness though, you don’t know Christie Leigh Mueller. Yet. Christie Leigh is the author of the new book Gridiron Belles: A Guide to Saturday in Dixie. Christie Leigh was on the radio show with Matt and Drew last week, and we wanted to have her on the blog to talk about football, tailgating and how to convince women to take both of them seriously.
Christie Leigh, I read you were raised a “Kentucky Belle.” Was it your love of Kentucky football that led you to write this book?
Kentucky football? Have you seen them play? Kidding, but I wasn’t allowed to wear blue growing up because my granddaddy played football for UL and is in their hall of fame. It was my love of football (Auburn is my team) that allowed me to always have great guy friends and fun dates all through college because we watched football together. I realized my sorority sisters were not enjoying Saturdays as much as I was… I wrote this for them. To help close the gap in the battle of the sexes.
I know you are on a promotional tour of the SEC member institutions for the book, is there a favorite on your list? Any tips for Cats fans headed down to Baton Rouge this weekend?
Each SEC town has something remarkable about it, picking a favorite SEC town would be like having a favorite child, I suppose we all have one but you can’t say it. However, CATS fans heading down to Death Valley need to pack some humility and thick skin. No man, woman or child is spared from their notorious “Tiger Bait” taunt and relentless heckling. It’s my suggestion that CATS fans keep trash talking to a minimum– the Tigers are favored by 35 points–this way LSU fans will still invite you to taste their Jambalaya and award winning Gumbo!
In your experience, what are some common “Saturday Rules/ Tailgate Rules” that you see men consistently violate? In other words, tell us what we are doing wrong. We are tired of women shaking their heads and rolling their eyes at us.
Men get so worked up about a jab from an opposing fan, a bad play call or a loss. We shake our heads at y’all because often times YOU are that over-served annoying fan, last time we checked you weren’t making millions by being a head coach and those are 18-21 year old kids out there that determine your (and subsequently our) happiness for the rest of the night. We want you to be passionate but not obnoxious.
We aren’t animals, Christie Leigh.
Maybe not in the off season…
OK seriously though, how can we trick our wife/ fiance/ girlfriend/ co-worker into liking football? Ms. Tyler Thompson loves football, how can we convince other women to love it?
We do love it! At least some of us do. You have to remember that we didn’t play little league football so we didn’t grow up knowing the nuances of the game. Right off the bat y’all have the advantage of understanding the game more than we do which can be intimidating for us. Especially when you can’t understand why we don’t understand. Try explaining it to your date in small bites before the game or during a commercial. This way you can actually look forward to including her when watching/attending the next game.
Make a quick plug for the book, why should we buy it?
If you love football and want your wife, girlfriend or sister to love football, this is the easiest gift you’ll ever buy. Your Belle will understand the basics of Xs and Os, learn which questions not to ask during a game, and will know better than to have a fall wedding. Not least of all, she will look beautiful while enjoying football with you– the gentle sports loving man that you are.
Alright, I’m sold. Where can I pick a copy up?
The best place to purchase is GridironBelles.com. If you send me an e-mail telling me about your Belle and why she needs to understand the game, I’ll sign your copy!
We all owe Christie Leigh a great debt of gratitude for all of her work on such an important subject. Christie Leigh is considering a weekly post on her blog about how men can be more gentlemen-ly on Saturdays, so stay tuned.
