Gregg Doyel suggests Thamel/NCAA Tag Team

Hey, party people.

Tag team investigative journalism is in full effect.

Our good friend Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com suspects Pete Thamel isn’t acting alone in his latest investigation of UK. Doyel believes the NCAA is working with Thamel and the New York Times to bring down Kentucky. He calls it “new territory” for Mark Emmert and the boys.

If the NCAA is indeed working with Thamel and the NYT to bring down certain programs, as Doyel suggests, any integrity they have left as the governing body of college athletics is upside down and inside out.

Whoomp there it is.

Hey, Thamel/NCAA….why don’t you look into your beloved UNC Tarholes academic scandal? This includes BOTH football AND basketball?! I guess since Kentucky and Calipari aren’t considered part of the social elite in this country, the media and the NCAA in particular can’t stand our success. Why? BECAUSE WE EARNED IT.

Does Doyel have any evidence to support this claim? If so, this should be an enormous blow to both the NCAA and the NY Times. Well, maybe not the NY Times. They pretty much get away with journalistic murder on a whole host of issues, not just KY basketball. But it would be a big blow to the NCAA.

I’d like to point out that there might be some good in this situation. Sandy Bell’s obviously great at her job. However, she can’t be everywhere, but as Matt correctly points out Thamel is going out of his way to go all over the world to dig around. Which I agree is a stupid thing to do. In a way though, the NCAA and Thamel might be fully vetting all of UK’s recruits for them! If they are putting so much effort to digging into every miniscule detail in these kidsw lives before they get to UK, then UK should never run into a situation like D. Rose.

You can be reading an article and it just ends in the middle of a sentence. You can look throughout the rest of that section for a possible continuation of the article and it’s nowhere to be found. This does not happen rarely. It is practically a daily occurrence. I don’t think it even employs proofreaders anymore it is so filled with errors. It was a foolish thing for Pett to do and more foolish for the LHL to publish it.

This has been the worst beginning to an off season ever. First we miss out on more than a few recruits. Then Cal makes us look scared by canceling the series with IU and UNC while making excuses for scheduling cupcakes and playing every possible game at a neutral site to avoid other team’s crowds. Now we are hearing about the NCAA sniffing around our recruits and the possibility of Noel being eneligible. What the heck is going on?????? Other fans should be praising us for our national championship, but it just seems that everyone is laughing at us more than they used to. To top it off I was in the infield for Derby and wore all my UK national championship gear. Some UofL fans were making fun of my blue UK socks near the port o pottys, but I just showed them 8 fingers. Then when I’m in the port o potty I can hear them outside laughing and saying I’m probably squating to pee. Well I wasn’t, I was just sitting down to #2 and just hadn’t seeled the deal when they force the door open and there was a crowd of them outside laughing at me and saying stuff about me sitting down to pee. 40 Please leave my good friend alone. It isn’t his fault that we refuse to play neutral courts. We just can’t get them any more attention in Indiana because every little kid here would grow up wanting to be a Wildcat. They don’t want to play here because Assembly Hall is like playing in a high school gym. They are really going to miss out on all the beautiful corn fields that Indiana has to offer. That’s truly their loss.

  45. Calipari

Thanks Tom. You helped me dodge the IU bullet next year and preserve my home winning streak. I owe you one. The only thing I had to offer was my in state rival’s scraps. They have trouble booking tractor pulls and livestock shows at Freedom Hall, but that’s all we have to offer here in Kentucky without having a single state of the art stadium or even a single pro team. Well there is one state of the art facility, but it’s “you know where”. I mean seriously, what was I thinking? I offered Freedom Hall and you offered Lucas Oil. That’s like asking you to trade my mule for your Audi. Of course my solution was to book it at Lucas Oil for the next 2 years because otherwise I was going to have to offer our neutral site as the YMCA in Hazard.

John, you know that isn’t true. You offered Lucas Oil for both games, but there’s no way my fan base can afford to travel, so we had to decline. Working in corn fields doesn’t pay much, and that’s pretty much all we have here in Indiana. Speaking of trading a mule for an Audi, that’s the same comparison I use when I explain why UK didn’t want to play us next year…why would an Audi like UK want to race a mule like IU? It’s a waste of their time.

Well I did offer Lucas Oil even though Lucas Oil officials had no knowledge of it even after I said UK still reserved the date for another team to play us. Hell, while I’m at it, we have the old Olympic stadium in Beijing reserved for next season as well. Sounds great, I know. Don’t sell yourself short either. IU is ranked #1 next year and definitely not a mule. UofL is ranked #2 and I’m sure I’ll be somewhere behind them if I can pay another recruit enough….I mean get another student athlete to commit to us for next year. You would think after us winning a national title that ALL the top recruits would be begging to come to UK. Sadly I’m almost to the point of begging them to play for us. Anyways. Glad we didn’t have to put our home winning streak against your Hoosiers in Rupp next year. You guys would have owned us and Zeller would have beat us by himself.

You offered Lucas Oil and we were going to get their permission to play there when we verbally agreed to. But after thinking about it more, we just couldn’t give your team any more publicity in our state. There are enough UK fans here already. No one even knew we still had a basketball team at IU anymore until Watford hit that shot against you all. Yeah, the moment that brought us back to “prominence” (I use quotes because I know it isn’t true). But what a moment it was. So important to us that we made a shrine to remember that glorious night. I know you were joking about paying recruits. I know UK doesn’t cheat. In fact, IU has more recently been on probation that UK, so obviously we are the cheaters. And don’t worry about getting another recruit, you all will most likely bring home #9 even if you don’t sign anyone else. Sure, us and Louisville have the early season nods, but who are we kidding here…we always choke. Or maybe it isn’t choking, maybe it’s Karma paying us back for our state being full of such idiotic pricks.

Come on Tom. Anyone with a brain knows that the “shrine” all my idiot fans are talking about is a yearly display done in your PRACTICE facility that has memorabilia from the previous season. It will be redone next year for the 12′ class and so on. Even though your team has been on probation more recently, let’s not compare all time stats. I know my simple minded fans love to pick time lines of stats to fit their arguments and they especially love beating their chests about all time records. Let’s just not mention the laundry list of severe violations we have had in almost every single decade since the 1950’s. Also not to mention the overall national perception of the UK program and myself personally (those two vacated Final Fours are a sore spot). Saying UK doesn’t cheat is like saying taxes don’t exist. Even though you might not personally see the money the government is taking, but you would be a moron to think it’s not real.

51-Calipari It’s so wonderful to see the high quality of education you’ve received in Indiana. The logic you use speaks for itself. In one sentence you accuse Cal of paying recruits, then say he’s almost to the point of begging them to play for us. Pray tell, which is it? Oh, and do you think it might just be possible that Lucas Oil officials might be trying to cover IU’s behind after the classless way they handled the negotiations? After the Final Four they had verbally agreed to neutral site games and Mitch Barnhart was under the impression they were still negotiating when IU made the announcement that the games were off. Totally classless! I would be ashamed to be a fan of such an institution. However, after seeing the behavior of the IU fans in Assembly Hall and hearing the horror stories of the UK fans in attendance at the game last Dec. it would surprise me now if ANY IU fans had any class at all.

  56. T Crean

Yes, of course I know its a yearly display, John. Geez, do you think just bc I coach at IU that I am stupid…wait, don’t answer that, of course that’s exactly what it means. But this shrine was as much about UK as it was IU. I mean, that’s all we could talk about in the shrine, playing UK, whether it be beating them or losing to them in the Sweet 16…sniff sniff 🙁 I will agree not to mention historical data again, because let’s face it, I’d rather not have to talk about Bob Knight and how he strangled players, threw tantrums on the court like the biggest 4yr old in the world, and how meaningless his life is these days. I will stick to current topics. Like how you all beat us in a neutral court in the tournament. Which is another reason why we won’t play you on a neutral court again, ever. We know that the only chance we have at beating you is by having our low-life fan base harassing your players and fans, and we even have to bring giant heads of pedophiles to hold behind the goals and try to distract your players from hitting free throws. It worked didn’t it? We only beat you by one measly point and how many free throws did you miss? Ha ha ha Man I loved that Sandusky giant head. It made my life and our program meaningful again…well to the people in IN anyway.

    Linda,

My apologies if you find my humor offensive. Your conspiracy theory about Lucas Oil covering for IU should apply the same for Mitch Barnhart’s claim that he had a verbal agreement with IU and UK was still negotiating with IU. Does it also seem possible that Mitch might have been covering UK’s behind because of the possible public perception of UK being scared to play IU in Rupp next year and also going back to Bloomington? This would especially be true after Calipari’s comments about “playing anyone, anytime, anywhere”, but we won’t go into John Calipari’s history of contradicting statements. About the abuse claims coming from UK fans at the game in Bloomington… We live in a time where technology is readily available. Almost everyone has a camera and video capabilities on their phones these days. With all this said, wouldn’t there be ONE single bit of evidence of abuse of UK fans besides a chant from the IU student section? Just one????? I don’t know about you, but I was at that game and did not see one instance of UK fans being abused. I talked to a couple of UK fans at Yogi’s before the game that were enjoying their experience and even talked to a few at a hotel restaurant after the game that did not claim to be spit on, threatened, or beer poured on them. Which really makes me wonder where in Assembly Hall is the secret bar they are serving beer now? What you should be ashamed of is yourself. For being a blind sheep following the every word of your carsalesmen of a coach and athletic director, and also believing the lies your fans spread to help gain sympathy for your loss. Good day.

    Dear 60,

Mitch says to tell you that he doesn’t give a rats ass about “public perception of UK being scared”. This public perception that you speak of is mainly coming from Louisville and Indiana fans, so why should be care? Those two fan bases are going to take any opportunity to twist things around and try to make themselves look better, because clearly they can’t do so on the court against us. Even when you had your win of the century, we squashed your dreams when we defeated you in the tourney and we took home the trophy.

In regards to no proof of abuse: well, there is that one picture of Darius being swarmed by frenzied fans who couldn’t believe that their team actually won a game against UK. Hell, Ol Roy took his UNC starters off the floor when he knew they were going to get swarmed by a team pathetic enough to storm the court for a regular season game…I guess he saw poor Darius in the skanky mosh pit. So even if we aren’t worried about our fans getting abused, it is reasonable to be concerned for our players getting trampled.

As for being ashamed of ourselves: I think it’s far more shameful to be part of a fan base who storms the court for an early December win, so I don’t think anyone is going to take your opinion seriously. Good day to you.

60-Reality–Mitch was absolutely NOT covering UK’s behind. If you had followed the events of that day here in Lex you would have known that Mitch was right smack in the middle of announcing a new contract for our women’s basketball coach when the IU cancellation of next year’s game was announced. He was shocked and dismayed. You I am sure know nothing about
Mitch Barnhart, because if you did know him you would know he is a man of absolute integrity. As to your ignorance of the abuse UK fans received, surely you could not have missed the fan who had to be treated for a torn ligament (and she has the Xrays to prove it)? It was all over the internet because she was a former Playboy bunnie or whatever those girls are called. I also saw with my own eyes on tv one our players possibly get trampled. Darius Miller WAS in danger that day. With the huge onrush of drunk students onto the floor it was impossible to tell for sure if he was trampled or not, but there was no excuse for the security to be so lax. Matt Jones was there covering the game and his description of the fans behavior is what I am basing my opinion on. Not only were UK fans in danger, Matt and a security guard had to save a poor IU fan who got a leg stuck in the bleachers and WAS being trampled. Matt said he was scared to death the kid was going to be trampled to death. By the way Matt said the fans were already pretty drunk before they got to the game so it didn’t really matter did it whether beer was being sold at Assembly Hall. I also read comments on this site from UK fans who attended the game who said they had never been treated so rudely at any away game in their lives, some even said they were afraid for their lives. Needless to say, I’m not just “drinking the koolaid”, and by the way I’m an Arizona Wildcat alum who can see things pretty clearly.

    Linda,

The beer reference wasn’t towards drunk IU fans. It was in response to many UK fans who claim to have beer poured or thrown at them when IU does not serve beer at the games. The playboy bunny getting her ankle twisted, I contribute to the fans storming the court. Although she did say that the gentlemen that ran into her stopped immediately, apologized, and helped her to her feet. I can link the picture of Crean escorting the UK players, including Darius, off the court to make sure they were safe if you would like. I’m not saying the court storming was justified, because it was excessive, but it happens all the time in sports. Even UK fans can testify to storming after a game as seen during the UK vs UT football game this year. What I am asking for is proof of verbal abuse, threats, spitting on children, cars being keyed, and anything else that was directly done to a UK fan on that day. Take the court storming and chants from the IU student section out of the equation and it’s nothing but a bunch of baseless claims that snowballed because UK fans were embarrassed by the loss.

63, I’m glad you have Keeneland to hold on to at night. The Indianapolis 500 says hello.

I do have to say out of the 200 UK fans that were at the game in Bloomington that day, there must have been 1,000 stories about fans being mistreated. That means only 800 were fabricated and the other 200 really happened.

67-Reality-Did the “gentleman” offer to pay the medical bills she incurred? To call a torn ligament a twisted ankle is minimizing it a bit don’t you think? In a crowd of 18,000 I imagine more than a few were able to sneak in some beer, especially since it appeared many of the security guards were of Bobby Knight’s generation. At Rupp the visiting team has real police escorting them. Storming the field in a football stadium and storming a basketball court are completely different. There is much less room on a basketball court and your fans were NOT trying to avoid the KY players. Your school had no plan to protect the visiting team in place. If I was a KY fan at that game I would have been paying attention to the game, not recording the other fans behavior. If the fans were being rude and threatening, I would have ignored it or tried to be as polite as possible to deescalate the situation. Recording them would only have served to increase the tension and make it more dangerous. At that point I would have just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible after the end of the game. For you to expect people to have recorded video when they are in that kind of situation is unrealistic. You may not understand this, but we were not embarrassed by the loss. I won’t even go into the reasons for the loss but it served the team very well and helped tremendously in their growth. I was glad when Tom Crean was hired because I knew he would do a good job and bring Indiana back to being a good rivalry, but now, after what transpired in Bloomington in Dec. and last week, I frankly couldn’t care less if we ever play IU again.

We have to blame this on George Rogers Clark. If the famous Kentuckian had stayed home and not rescued Indiana from British rule, none of this would have happened. While they only won on a last second 3 point shot, at least, Hoosiers are beginning to learn how to protect their own turf.

The problem with Doyel’s “analysis” is that Thamel’s initial story on the seediness of Noel’s recruitment came out in early March, when Syracuse was the presumed leader . . . and the two main characters in his investigation are Driscoll, with connections to Providence, and Randolph, with connections to Syracuse. I haven’t seen Thamel point any fingers at Cal, Kentucky, nor anyone directly linked to them. Other than Noel, of course.
