I haven’t heard much commentary on this team’s passing ability. A big part of the appearance of stagnant offense are the late and off target passes. Last year’s team could kick off drives and hit the open man in the shooting pocket. This year, passes wait until a guy is open, not anticipating him open, and often arrive high, low, left, and right but rarely facilitating a quick catch-and-shoot. Is this just me?

One other thought- I notice that we do a great job of lifting the close-out defender of the ground with shot fakes, but we can’t seem to capitalize. 1st, I think we get handchecked on those alot, but why don’t we do more driving under the defender? I’m not talking about taking a shot and diving into the defender, which is often not called, but if he leaves the ground on the close out, just dribble under and let him land on you. Something to slow those close outs down.

Goodwin is the most selfish player i have seen in a long time at KY. I am sorry for saying this but it’s one of the problems this team is having. I would bet that Goodwin is not well liked in the locker room. Glad we won. KW showed up and showed out. NN always brings it. GBB!!

  29. Jughead
    10:16 am January 16, 2013 Permalink

I heard there is some bad juju in the locker room. Poythress, Harrow, and Wiltjer have checked out and lead the malcontent brigade. Goodwin on the fence, Noel not part of it.

That’s why they play like crap. This was a win–granted–but we all know it was unconvincing.

  30. G-Unit
    10:16 am January 16, 2013 Permalink

To me the progress of the team can be seen in 3 plays:

Play 1: Archie is on fast breat with Julius Mays, Mays gives it up to Archie and Archie shoots bad transition 3

Play 2: Archie picks up loose ball 15 feet from basket and has Wiltjer to his left wide open, and Nerlens to his right wide open, yet he shoots the layup himself. If you substitute Doron for Archie, TJ for Wiltjer and Davis for Noel on that play, Doron wouldve passed it to TJ and TJ would have lobbed it to Davis. Thats the difference!

Play 3: Harrow on fast break gives it up to Archie and instead of giving it back to Harrow he tried to dunk it and missed.

  31. Heather
    10:16 am January 16, 2013 Permalink

One thing this team needs to improve on is hitting easy buckets. They missed at least four shots around the rim in the first half last night. Those are easy points and could hurt in close games.

Some of those fouls on Archie were very weak, it was as if the refs were purposefully trying to even out the fouls once they laid a heavy whistle on UT in the beginning of the 2nd half. The refs were trying to find a way to move that 5th foul from Archie but no one was close to move it to.

That’s EXACTLY what I said watching last night when Archie got that ball…I rewound the game 4 times right here to make sure I wasn’t seeing something that wasn’t there…but he had 2 better options to pass to and he went 1 on 1…made it…but wrong choice. This is why the team looked more fluid when Archie went out of the game….he’s still got alot to learn and after seeing that, i think HE is the KEY to this teams post season run. But it all depends on his learning of the game and being more of a team player than an Archie player.

Archie was always sort of a ball hog, but early in the year he was forced to play point guard and pass the ball. Which he struggled with. Then when Harrow finally came into his own, Archie got the green light to just be himself again and it seems at times that he’s making up for lost time by NEVER passing the ball anymore.

Either way, Cal will fix that no problem. Archie will be a STUD in the NBA – prototypical NBA player.

Everyone is so negative about the players, we are what we are, we have the most talented players in the country if they can put it together we are the best team in the country. No one else has 3 first round draft picks (we have 3 top ten!) Hating on Goodwin is ridiculous, he is the offensive presence that is necessary or the offense does nothing at all. He may be out of control, but he wants to score, when he figures it out he will be the best college basketball player in the country. He may be selfish but he is the best scorer on the team and its hard to trust this group of players around him. People don’t realize he leads the team in assists, when he sees an opening he goes for it, and i think he needs too (reminds me of last year when everyone screamed at Teague every time he drove to the basket, even though he made most of his layups, how helpful was teague in the tournament). This team may not get it together but if they do we can easily make a sweet 16 which I will happy with. We cant win it every year.

(this year reminds me of UK-UL last year but in reverse…UL very good, Uk seemingly not very good, hopefully someone upsets UL in the tourney a la Kansas v. UNI)

Matt,Can’t call in, but would love to hear your opinion on this. I am in no way saying that Archie is Jordan, but I couldn’t help but think about Phil Jackson’s triangle offense. It works best with a good center/forward and I think Noel would excel in it, however Archie, with is freakish athletism, would benefit most. Just like Jordan early in his career, he has the ability to make the difficult play and drive consistantly to basket. This offense transformed Jordan’s career and made him realize he has to include his teammates to be successful. The key to this working is to have the Horace Grant/Dennis Rodman guy to clean up the rim. It would be nice if that was Poythress. Either way that type of offense would help Archie become dominant.

  118. UK#1
    10:46 am January 16, 2013 Permalink

Goodwin’s problem is he had some success earlier in the season with driving the ball to the basket and scoring at will against weaker teams. Now he is playing against better competition and he hasn’t learned that he needs to stop and pull up and shoot the 8 footer. Coach needs to make him stop and pull up and shoot when he’s OPEN not 3 on 1.

  134. L2C8

I’m sorry, but whenever Poythress catches the ball outside of 5′ from under the basket, he is shaky. He almost either dribbles off his feet or drops the pass EVERYTIME. And he makes about 2 out of 5 bad passes as well.

  135. philip
    10:55 am January 16, 2013 Permalink

Matt I love ya but all this micro managing of your analysis (season making shots, a pass that may have turned the tide) ignores desperately the big picture of this team. No personality as a team has turned out no team leader. This usually evolves naturally, but it is not happening.
Also, we suck on defense besides Nerlens. When Rupp rocks it is for 1 reason, steals that cause breakouts that end in dunks or 3s.
If someone does not emerge as an on court leader and the D stays where it is we will either barely make the tournament, or not at all.
And I’m pretty positive about all things Cats, but realistic also.
Thanks for all you guys do.
