Got “Meh”?

meh

A hot topic of conversation around here lately has been the overwhelming sense of “meh” surrounding this Kentucky team. Sure, they’re doing okay, there’s lots of talent and March Madness is just around the corner. We’ve won some big games (remember how good beating Louisville felt? How we ruined Bruce Pearl’s comeback?), but in your heart of hearts, you can’t deny that this team just doesn’t give you butterflies like a certain recent suitor.

It’s okay; I’m here to help. Let’s move past the “meh.”

Stop Living in the Past — Stop comparing this season to last season. I feel like people have been preaching this since the preseason, but honestly, it took me a long time to accept that the Draft Cats weren’t walking through that door. Yes, last year was awesome. Yes, that team was special and will go down in Kentucky history as one of the most talented, charismatic teams to wear blue and white. Do I miss the blowouts, the dancing, and the confetti that was last season? Absolutely–it was like Kentucky basketball finally woke up and went on a five month bender (and we wonder why we’re hungover!).

Comparing this team to last year’s is useless…it isn’t fair to them and it will only upset you.

Gain Some Perspective — Okay, so before we put the past totally in the past, let’s remember how far we’ve come. Two Words: Billy Gillispie. Here are some more: VMI. Gardner Webb. Pop Tarts. Bathroom stalls. N.I.T. Had enough? Maybe “just good” isn’t that bad after all.

Appreciate What You Have — They might not be the Draft Cats, but this team has talent. Click on each player’s name for proof:
Terrence Jones
Brandon Knight
DeAndre Liggins
Darius Miller
Josh Harrellson
Doron Lamb
Jon Hood
Jarrod Polson
Eloy Vargas
Stacey Poole

Look forward — The best part about our predicaMEHnt? This team is on the cusp of the most exciting time of year–March Madness. And they’re coming off a solid start-to-finish performance against South Carolina. That’s more that we could say a week ago. If this team has finally decided to step it up, they’ve picked the perfect time. With four games left in the regular season, they have time to iron out the kinks and build on last week’s encouraging performances. Also in the positive column: this team has some really good shooters in Doron Lamb and Darius Miller (when he shows up). That’s more than we could say in years past and will be valuable in the post-season. Finally, the best thing about this young team? Each minute of practice and time with Calipari will help them grow. Buck up and start saving your sick days…you’ll need them for March Madness.

22 days.

I would much rather have this than suppose to: Michael Porter, Mark Coury, Mike Williams, AJ Stewart taking the court for Kentucky that was just an awful time for UK basketball but truly blessed to have coach Cal and everything he has done in just two short years!!! I love this team be better if Enes played but thats overwith and cant wait to see how we play against nations top teams on neutral court come tournament time…. Go BBN!!!!!!!!

Kentucky will not win 30 games this year, and that will mark the 1st time in a few years that Cal hasn’t hit the 30 mark………BUT……… Don’t count this team out. If UK can face smaller, quicker teams in the NCAA, I think we can go far. But the teams with great big men like Ohio State, KU, UNC, etc will give us problems and will beat us. But if we can luck out and face opponents like us (with no dominating presence down low), and if we’re hitting from 3pt land, then we can go all the way. Time will tell.

I will take my chances with this team in the NCAA. Unless a
something has changed, tournament games are played on a neutral court. Liggins coming off the bench is a plus.

The malaise in the fan base is a result of this team’s inability to win three in a row since SEC play started. After we beat them little piggies. We will be returning to Rupp with a 3 game win streak and the fans will be back on the band wagon.

1 word Enes. Why does no one bring this up? Everyone knows with Enes we ate a top 5 team, without him we are mehhhh. Plain and simple. That is why, 1 player away from being great and he carries a clip board and Is on our bench. we have a nice team but not a great team, and the fact we know about next year, this is a tweaner year. And say what you want last year spoiled us and it was awesome. 1 word Enes.

11 Really? Hood was a top rated player coming out of high school and he just aint getting it. Polson is a walk on with a one year scholarship. This team isnt deep and it would be nice to see someone step up but it is late Febuary so it most likely aint happening. But I think both players should and will stay put.

72% of 25,000 voters on sportsnation said Griffins hood dunk was overrated. BTI was right. Kanter = elite team. W/O Kanter, UK = top 20 team which is nothing to be ashamed of and it is a factor for people who thinks politics caused UK to get fd over again. Other teams break rules and get slaps on the wrist, we have 22 clean years in our athletics program and a kid who got essentially a scholarship and expenses for free in high school get told he cant play….what a system

The only thing I fear with this team is foul trouble. If Harrelson or Knight get in foul trouble we are in trouble. Other than that I am not scared of any team out there. The team I would want to play most would be DUKE. They are a very good team but they are not the type of team that our current team would struggle with. THey have little post presence and I would put our guards up against any of the country. I definitely do not want to play 4 games in 4 days but other than foul trouble I am looking forward to the tourney.

I think as long as we keep hitting from three we are dangerous. That is this teams major weapon. Unfortunately as the saying goes, live by the three; die by the three. That being said you only have to stay hot for 4 games to reach the final four so I think it is going to be an interesting run as long as we keep hitting shots.

Agreed. I hate when people compare last season to this season. It’s a new team, 18 year olds playing tough contenders in the SEC at their loud and rowdy home arenas for the first time. . why isn’t anything ever good enough? All that really matters after next week is how they play in the SEC tournament and how they play during March Madness.
We’ve got to get over the fact that Enes is NOT GOING TO PLAY IN THE NCCA, end of story. We would love for him to be there, but it’s over, wasn’t fair to us, but it’s done. Move on, appreciate who we have. We’ve also got to trust in Coach Cal, supporting him in all decisions. The USC game hopefully gave them a huge confidence booster & we’ll get to see our team dominate the rest of the season.

    Go Big Blue!

Last year’s team was phenominal – but it wasn’t a program team. It was a one-year fluke.

This year’s team is putting together a team that’s very comparable to Tubby’s last three years at UK.

Forget Enes – Bottom line is that Cal took a gamble on a questionable situation and he lost. SO many other schools shied away for obvious reasons because they didn’t want to take the risk.

Yes – I’ll be the first to agree that the NCAA is inconsistent and it sickens me to see a situation like Cam Newton or the OSU tattoo’d five treated with kid gloves while Enes was given the boot – but the fact remains that he had a big question mark by his name to begin with.

This UK team has talent and on a given night – it can play with just about anyone. But as seen in SEC play, on any given night it can be vulnerable to any of the 68 teams that will make the NCAA field.

A Sweet 16 finish should be considered remarkable for this squad. Funny thing is -Tubby was run out of town for such finishes.

IS it just me or is anyone else sick of hearing about last year’s team. Yes we had a great regular season but we are UK because we win titles and when I think about last years team all I think about is how disappointed I was after the WVU loss. I hope this team makes it to the final 4 (and if we hit the 3 and have good matchups anything can happen) just so we will never talk about the biggest under achieving team in UK history ever again!!

Go Big Blue-Lets have a special March!

You should of said something about “what if Enes had been cleared?”…this isn’t the team that Coach Cal had planned on coaching the entire season, it’s not the team he recruited; he recruited Enes as well. I’m sure he expected to have him for at least for some portion of the season..this team would be top 5 if we had the turk.

Frankly, there is no dominating team this year and on a given night anyone can beat anyone else so I still like our chances. It will help if we get a decent seeding and do not play someone like ourselves or St Johns in second round…..

Old School, your posts amaze me. There is a huge difference between getting a 3-5 seed and a 8-11 seed. Those teams are not “very comparable”. Tubby’s teams in the last few years did not beat a single decent team – this years’ team has. Tubby’s teams were depressing to watch. Plus, with Tubby’s last few years, there was no hope for future success while we continued to recruit average, system players and strike out with talented players – even talented players who wanted to go to UK (ala Wright from UNC). Now, even if we go down in the Sweet 16 (or earlier) I can live with it better knowing that each year we will continue to have the talent to compete for SEC Championships, Final Fours and National Championships. There is no more depressing basketball and I am genuinely excited to watch each game now – as opposed to dreading the games. I for one am getting exactly what I wanted when I was bitching about the last few Tubby years and the Gillispie years. I do not want to go back to that. If you do, you are crazy.

I like our team but I can’t say I love it. It is a more typical team than last year, and I can even take most of our losses, but some of them were complete jokes. There is no reason for a team to play as well as they do at home and completely and utterly flat and opposite on the road. It’s like they don’t pay attention until the other team has a double digit lead and then fight all the way back to take a lead and lose by 2 points. It’s hard to swallow when you get upset by one team that shouldn’t beat you but when it’s multiple teams it’s hard to excuse. The bad thing is even if we win our last two road games we still haven’t proven much because Arkansas is not very good and UT is spiraling down the toilet. And if we lose either one it’s even worse. Like I said I like our team and I am proud of what they have accomplished with the major losses we took from last year’s team but I expected a little bit better than what we have gotten so far. Maybe not 24-2 but 22-4 is not out of the question.
