    2. Chris Petersen at Boise St. looks like the most logical choice.

    3. Don’t pass out on this one…if Muschamp stays with UF, Charlie Strong will be available to come back to the SEC. Don’t laugh, it’s possible.

    The offense executed marginally better.

The issue is the blanket statement that the offense (as a whole) has improved b/c that statement is pure conjecture. UK failed to establish a running presence and failed to execute down-field passes. B/c those 2 key elements are still virtual unknowns, you can’t really comment on the overall improvement of the offense.

Besides that, it was UL’s defense. We will see at least 7 other defenses that are worlds better than UL’s.

62- In Matt’s defense, I think he’s referring to the offensive execution. The fundamentals were improved. We caught the ball with regularity and the o-line actually provided a formidable pocket for Max. Both those statements are true.

  77. KCK
    10:24 am September 4, 2012 Permalink

Matt, the problem is that the “people in the middle” make arguments that are invalid. Who CARES if the offense is improved (which it seems to be) if the defense allows people to walk into the end zone untouched constantly. Maybe the worst defensive performance I’ve ever seen by an SEC school. The bottom line is that we’re going to lose… therefore, the “people in the middle” are making arguments that are irrelevant. Who cares if the offense is improved if we’re still getting blown out?

  78. Rixter
    10:24 am September 4, 2012 Permalink

Saying that Neloms was playing good defense because he was close to the receiver is like saying Digger is a good broadcaster because he’s sitting near Jay Bilas.
ANY player in the secondary has to occasionally attempt to make a play on a pass. Being close enough to tackle the guy does NOT constitute good defense.

And my eye test is pretty accurate. Here you are saying that if they left Teddy in the whole game they score 50+ and yet you still are trying to be optimistic. If they can score 50+, the objective part of you should be saying (out loud) that the time has come to make a huge pitch to someone who can seriously manage an SEC football program.

  83. thewaitfor8
    10:24 am September 4, 2012 Permalink

Basketball equivalent of what Matt just said. Guy gaurding a guy close, but doesn’t put hand in his face when he puts up a shot, shot goes in. “Well he hit a good shot, can’t knock the defense!” Foolish. That ball could have been a badly thrown ball. The WR could have just adjusted and Neloms would still be looking at his chest rather than knowing where the ball is.

  87. UKAlum05

The #1 reason why Joker won’t succeed at Kentucky – when asked about his decision not to call a timeout at the end of the first half with 90 seconds left on 4th down for U of L, Joker responds – “well, we just wanted to get out of the half.”

Kentucky doesn’t need a coach that is so worried about making mistakes that they play scared. Its no secret that Kentucky won’t ever have the talent level that other top tier SEC teams have so we need to be the team with the attacking mindset. If you are the underdog you have to play to win and not play “not to lose.” Getting out of a half – especially when UL was up 15 and supposed to get the ball back to start the second half – is not acceptable. UL had no timeouts left. If we took a couple of shots down field on 1st/2nd down, we could have taking a knee on third down and then “gotten out of the half.”

Joker’s mindset of playing field position, limiting turnovers, and “keeping it close” by not playing aggressive will NEVER work in the SEC

  88. KCK
    10:25 am September 4, 2012 Permalink

I’d fire him tomorrow and call the season a wash and use the rest of the season to put every single resource and dime that we have into finding a REAL coach.

  89. Bicycle Seat Sniffer
    10:25 am September 4, 2012 Permalink

Matt – Do you have any concerns that we were only throwing the ball between 0-10 yards? After the first drive, I can’t remember any pass attempts that traveled beyond 20 yards in the air (minus the McCaskill trick pass). My thought is that SEC coaches and defenses will absolutely smother the under routes and dare Max Smith to throw deep. Then, the offense looks as inept as it did last year.

Go back and look at the stat box, UK throws for $280 and averaged more yards per rushing attempt then UL. Kickoff returns look good and offense looked great against a top 20 defense. We will have to score 28 points each week to win but we will be in games.

bubble screens, WR screens, whatever screens are great. . .when they work. . .when they aren’t run every other play. my problem with this offense is you can’t continually run those screens when playing catch-up in the 2nd half especially when the defense is expecting them. go back and rewatch the game. there are 2 3rd and longs where they throw the screen and the offensive player is surrounded by the defense at the point of the catch. the result? no gain or minus yardage.

109 is correct. Max took what they were giving b/c UK wasn’t doing anything with it but stockpiling yards and burning clock.

Not saying he didn’t do it well, but Max completing 30 8-yard passes for all of 14 points doesn’t equate to a good offense.

Improved over last year in the very basic of fundamentals in a few key areas? No doubt about it. But, they’re gonna have to become a little more dynamic if we expect to put up more points/game against better defenses.

This is one of the problems I have. Players playing out of position, as on the wrong side of the ball. Let’S take EJ Fields as an example. He played QB and DB in high school, and was a four time state track champion. He did not return punts in high school; as a 4 time state track champion. What should that tell you, not very good hands, or he would be returning punts. So UK recruits him tries to make him a receiver instead of moving him to the defensive side of the ball. He’s plenty tall and athletic enough to play db, just wasting another talented kid in my opinion.

I appreciate KSR for giving UK fans a place to find out what is going on with the team while young writers improve their craft.
The strength seems to be fresh young minds that love to express their opinions…although they are almost always in the moment without the perspective of time.

Unfortunately, many of us fans have been attending UK games for decades…for me it’s 6 decades.
That gives us a much different perspective. Some of us have been around since John Ray, Fran Curci, Jerry Claiborne and yes, Hal Mumme and Rich Brooks.
We have a much different perspective because we have a sense of what makes a successful football coach at UK and which are legit and which are pretenders.

An interesting series of posts and responses might be to ask older fans why a particular coach was successful at UK.
I suspect you would get some interesting answers.

Another interesting series might be to compare the actual games played and won during Bear Bryants at UK are versus the Fran Curci era.
You and most fans might find themselves very surprised when you start comparing scores against Oklahoma, Penn State and of course Tennessee.

While some high-profile coaches may turn it down because they are intimidated by the chances of doing well, other high-profile guys may accept it because it is the way they are wired. Mark Helfrich — is the current offensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks. He was previously the quarterbacks coach at Boise State, Arizona State, and Colorado. A very experienced coach and well-versed in what may be the hottest offensive system in all of college football. As a bonus, he has also been a part of the recruitment of Trinity’s James Quick and may considerably lift UK’s chances with the program-changing recruit.

David Yost — Is getting more attention as an exceptional playcaller after 11 years as a Missouri assistant. He has a great eye for talent and pointing out mismatches in his spread scheme. In 2011, Mizzou ranked ninth nationally in rushing (244 yards per game) and had one of the most balanced offenses, as Mizzou was one of only two schools in the country to average at least 230 yards rushing and passing in each game.

Trooper Taylor — One of the hottest and most successful recruiters in the SEC. He brought in and trained some elite receivers at Oklahoma State and Tennessee before making his way to Auburn. He is continuing that trend and has turned Emory Blake into one of the SEC’s best pass-catchers. He was co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Bobby Petrino – He is a winner on the football field. Not so much of it. We all know about him and his success as the former Louisville and Arkansas head coach, but he may not even be considered based on his recent transgressions.

Paul Petrino – The Arkansas play caller now, Bobby’s brother is one good coach in his own right. In 2010, he guided an Illinois offense that broke school records for total points (423) and points per game (32.54). The Illini averaged 42.1 points and 448.9 total yards over the final seven games of the season.

Kirby Smart – Alabama’s defensive coordinator has been in charge of the nation’s overall best defense over the last five great years. A lot of fans say UK going for him is a pipe dream and he would never want to caoch at UK, but you never know for sure. He is certainly a coach to consider and try to talk to.

Todd Monken — This will be Monken’s 2nd season as Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator. Monken spent seven seasons as Eastern Michigan’s coordinator in the 1990s before moving on. He spent three seasons as Oklahoma State’s wide receiver coach before moving with Les Miles to LSU. Monken spent four seasons as LSU’s wide receiver coach before serving in that capacity for two seasons (2009-10) with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. He returned to the college ranks last season, overseeing the offense for the best team in Oklahoma State history. His predecessor at Oklahoma State, Dana Holgorsen, is coach at West Virginia.

Bud Foster – Turns 53 in July, Foster is a perennial name on this type of list. At some point, you figure a school is going to give the Virginia Tech defensive coordinator the chance to be a head coach. He has been at Virginia Tech since 1987 and has been an assistant to Frank Beamer since 1983, when both were at Murray State, Foster’s alma mater. Foster won the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s best assistant in 2006. His defenses annually rank among the nation’s best, especially against the run; Tech has ranked outside the top 12 nationally in total defense only once in the past eight seasons.

Tee Martin – We know all about this guy and his star in the college coaching ranks is rising quickly. He may be too green to be hired for such a job, but he could be the type of coach who is truly able to bring many high-level recruits with him to Lexington.

As bad as our defense was Sunday, if I were a UL fan I would be concerned for my defense because a UK team that was supposedly not to be any good was able to move the ball quite efficiently at times. Apparently they are not as good as thought on defense.

No matter what, coal is in decline. It’s running out and it’s cheaper to use natural gas. Whether people protest or not, jobs will be lost. The answer for a new future in Appalachian Kentucky is no single silver bullet, but a bunch of silver bb’s. we’ve got to support local entrepreneurship, sustainable forestry (the other natural resource of east ky) and take advantage of new clean energy oppotunities like efficiency retrofits.

We need to make a coaching change soon to make sure we can keep up with recruiting for next year. That’s why you don’t wait too long into this season. You fire Joker, name Sanders as interim, and make your hire and allow that coach to get going on recruiting.

Re: coal, when it is made cleaner it stops being economically feasible. The price gap between goal and natural gas is already basically gone, and the gap between it and solar has closed dramatically in the past decade.

I’m not one of the people you mentioned from outside the area (from a holler 30 minutes from Middlesboro). Still, to answer your question about what I would want for the people of Eastern KY: I want my grandfathers and other relatives to not have gotten black lung. I want slurry ponds to stop festering or, worse, spilling. If there are no jobs, there is no chain on the people from the mountains, and they should find work elsewhere. I moved away and expect to retire back home. I miss home, but I would sooner be across the country than working for an industry that intentionally (to this day!) poisons land, skirts health regulations, and leaves little more than broken bodies and scarred terrain in its wake. If the money were more than bread crumbs left to satiate folks back home then I could understand the appeal, but it’s easy to be the highest-paying employers in the area. What they should do is reinvest the money in the area instead of taking 99% of it away and leaving the mess for us to clean up.
