Is this the saem coach that the media was critisizing yesterday??? Amazing how they turn on you so fast.
All this is what he does for a kid who will never even play for him.

Great for Enes and all, but why on Earth can’t Vargas look that fluid in a game? In this video, Eloy dropped fewer passes than Kanter and looked pretty smooth. Vargas has missed some wide open dunks/layups in games. I wish practice translated.

if Vargas ever has a practice dummy guarding him in a real game, he’ll probably light it up!

#12: Probably poole. These look like indiv workouts that take place after practice. This team has a solid 5 guys but thier only hope of a late run in march will come from those 6th and 7th guys stepping up big time.

    12) I’m guessing that’s Poole.

And Vargas looks plenty athletic. I know it may be beyond hope, but maybe if he just had a few GOOD minutes on the floor his confidence would pick up and some of the things you see here can come out. I think the guy forgets he’s a strong 6’10 when he gets on the floor and gets a bit scared. Def needs a little Kenyon Martin attitude in him.

To bring out Vargas’s potential…we clearly need to have the other team put giant pads on the front of their bodies. The big guy will then start handing out nightly triple doubles.

That actual interview was terrible. Just let them off the hook, why don’t you. What about asking them about why they changed the rules to begin with. It is not like UK just went to get a foreign pro player. The NCAA changed the rules and then came back and declared the first player to petition ineligible. I have not seen an answer to that.

  25. UK Wildcat
    10:14 am January 21, 2011 Permalink

Players in this video are: Kanter, Vargas, Hood, Poole, and Polson. Must have been one of those late workouts to try to get somebody to step up.

  26. Mitchispaidtoomuch
    10:18 am January 21, 2011 Permalink

22: I understand that, but the key is “coach”. I don’t see much coaching by him, but I see alot of practicing by Enes with the team as a whole, and I’m still wondering if this is legal according to the NCAA.I hope for our sake, it is.

  35. ReverendBlue

If you just watched this drill, you would think that Vargas was the better of the 2 players. Vargas looked good in the drill.

  36. OK
    11:07 am January 21, 2011 Permalink

So I guess I’m alone in saying that I was not even slightly impressed by Enes in this workout…After all the stink that was made, watching this was a let down. I was suprisingly more impressed by Vargas (a just threw up in my mouth while typing that). Guess you can’t really tell much though by a 5 min practice drill.

  37. beau
    11:10 am January 21, 2011 Permalink

    27) Do you honestly think a 2 minute video is going to cost Kanter a lot of money? There’s a reason he is STILL a top-10 pick without playing a minute of college basketball. I don’t think this little video with zero context to it is going to cause his draft stock to fall.

And if anyone is saying we aren’t missing much by Kanter not playing, then you should probably give all those pro GMs a call and let them know not to waste the pick in June.

  38. Just saying
    11:10 am January 21, 2011 Permalink

is this legal in the eyes of the NCAA? I thought they said he couldn’t practice with the team. Looks more like a practicing player than a student coach? It would suck to get penalized for something stupid like this.

UK fans (yes I am one)kill me. Seriously after 2 minutes of video, some of you turds actually say that you are not impressed with Kanter, and maybe him not playing isnt such a bad thing. Did any of you who said that crap watch the Nike World Game when he shoved and bullied the best freshman (Sullinger) around and broke Dirks scoring record for the game ? But after this video you are questioning how good he is. I swear some of those who say crap like this are the same ones who on TCP say things like “Poole looks just like Estill” and other ignorant stuff. Say what you want about Maggard, but its very rare that you see such stupid analysis of two minutes of video on his site, and after only 38 comments there is actually more than one person saying that.
As far as Vargas goes hopefully he will get better, especially next year, and no he is not unathletic or a stiff. Maybe it is confidence and strength. “This video might cost Kanter”, really. If a pro scout said watch this, I’m sure another would counter with the Nike game video.

You guys are scaring me. It was a bleedin’ drill. Have you not seen the two actually play basketball? Enes is a stud, and Vargas is a skilled big man who simply–for whatever reason–lacks the will to dominate, and so gets dominated.

#37 I could be wrong and I’m no expert but if I am looking at a kid who for whom I have no reliable game film, seeing this is going to give me some pause. I’m not saying it hijacks his career, but even falling a couple spots costs a ton of money.
You’re right, there is a context to everything. Hopefully the context here is that Vargas has a ton of untapped potential. It is hard to argue that he looks better in this drill. And yeah, it is just a drill, but this is the kind of thing NBA teams do when they work kids out.

If you really are a huge UK fan, learn a few things about basketball, stop being narrow minded and please don’t make UK fans sound like freaking stupid xenophobs.

This is just 2 minutes of practice. 2 MINUTES. But it’s enough for you to see that Kanter is no good. Because you know so much about basketball. Have you seen Kanter destroy Sullinger in the Nike Hoops Summit?

    You’re just a dumbarse.

  52. tim

Everybody needs to think back to the Nike Hoops Summit. I watched Kanter break Nowitski’s scoring record, all over Jared Sullinger’s big fat head. Don’t let a 2 minute drill fool you.

  53. beau
    2:24 pm January 21, 2011 Permalink

    47) If that were the case then maybe. But the fact is that there is a full game that was televised on ESPN or ESPN2 where Kanter out-played Sullinger and anyone else the US threw at him this past year. That film does nothing to hurt his credibility or draft stock.

    48) Cal isn’t wasting time with Enes. Cal is dedicated to him as well and still considers him a big part of the team. He said his goal now with Enes is to get him ready for the draft. No time being wasted at all.

    50) Go watch the game tape from the game I was referring to above (I forgot which one it was… it was BIG game though) where Kanter out-played anyone on the court, including the best-of-the-best from the US. He’s legit and your post is a total fail in every possible sense.

If Eloy continues to work hard in practice, he will eventually get his confidence up. Who would have thought Jorts would have made such a difference from last year to this year. Jorts has grown leaps and bounds and I think Eloy will have a break-out game and slowly work to improve off of his break-out game. He might be able to average 8 and 8 next year in limited minutes. We can only hope at this point, but we need to support him and not run him in the ground like we tend to do to players that don’t reach our expected potential.
