Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Good Job, Good Effort.

Well, it was fun while it lasted, right? Kentucky played a great first half, and went in to the locker room with a 17-7 lead. The second half was all South Carolina’s, though. QB Connor Shaw found his receivers, RB Marcus Lattimore found running lanes, and USC’s pass rush found Kentucky’s backfield. It was a valiant effort, but the Cats just couldn’t finish the job against the nation’s sixth-ranked team.

Injury Report: QB Max Smith (ankle), S Dakotah Tyler (knee), OG Zach West (shoulder) and RB Raymond Sanders (knee) will all be evaluated tomorrow.

-Freshman QB Jalen Whitlow was the big story of the night. He got the call after QB Max Smith suffered an ankle injury on the first drive of the game. Whitlow, a true freshman, showed plenty of poise keeping the Wildcats in the game for the entire first half against one of the nation’s best defenses. Phillips was encouraged with Whitlow’s performance, but says he missed a ton of motions and shifts that contributed to USC’s seven sacks. Whitlow wasn’t great, but was a little better than “not god-awful” after all.

-QB Max Smith’s status is uncertain at this point. The X-rays  he had on his ankle was negative, and he will be evaluated further tomorrow. If Smith’s unable to go for a long period of time, freshman QB Patrick Towles’ redshirt year may be reevaluated. According to Phillips, that will only happen if Towles will be asked to play a significant role, otherwise they’ve shelve him for the year.

-Kentucky’s defense showed a lot of heart to start the game by forcing some three-and-outs, and disrupting Shaw’s rhythm. Eventually, though, they started to wear down when the offense couldn’t sustain drives. The unit seems to be getting better each week, and are much better than the terrible bunch we saw against Louisville. It’s not coincidence that it has happened after a little bit of a scheme change.  Getting DE/LB Taylor Wyndham on the field more was undoubtedly the right move, as he’s made plays every week. DC Rick Minter is happy with the progress they’ve made, and hopes to continue it going forward.

-For the most part, freshman CB Cody Quinn played an outstanding game opposite Cartier Rice and he looks like he will hold that spot of the rest of the season. With Quinn’s emergence, CB Martavius Neloms started the game at safety, the position he played all of last year. Neloms’ is very physical, as you can see from his exceptional punt coverage this year, making the safety position a better fit for him.

-At the end of the first half, Kentucky looked like it would extend its lead. After some terrible time management and miscommunication, the Cats came up empty on the drive and wouldn’t score again in the game. “We missed a huge opportunity. You’ve got to get some points out of that,” Phillips said. “They took the momentum and we never got it back.”

-One of the most encouraging things about this team is the young guys making plays. It’s a different young guy every week, and this week it was WR A.J. Legree. We can see why the coaches gushed about Legree and Sweat early in the year. They both have shown playmaking ability that should excite the fan base about the future of the program.

We lost but I think we knew that would happen going in. The fact we actually made a game out of most of it goes to show we’ve got some good young talent. Whitlow is a true freshman and, for the most part looked pretty solid. Our receivers and RBs made big plays against one of the top defenses in the country. Lots of promise on this roster… It’s probably a year too late for Joker but whoever is next is going to have some really good players.

Young guys did make plays but unfortunately our coaches didnt even give them a chance at the end of the first half. Any coach worth a damn goes to the end zone on first down with a minute to play on the oppossing team’s 10 yard line with a minute left in the half after a big turnover. What does our illustrious JOKER do – a draw play.
Get out of town you clown!! I feel for these kids.

Anybody know why when UK declined a pass interference call in the first half due to the receiver making about a 25 yd reception, why the officials marked the ball for the interference call instead of where the reception occurred? Anyone know why the coaches/players/fans in the stands weren’t going crazy?

Re: Towles, to this young man and his parents as a fellow parent of an NCAA athlete (older) in another sport that has dealt with transfers…..DO NOT let Patrick give up his redshirt. If he plays this year he will have only 3 years eligibility left at UK. Should he decide to transfer, he would be down to 2 years after sitting out a transfer “penalty” year. If this young man is dead set on staying a Wildcat, no matter what lies ahead, then DO NOT PLAY THIS YEAR – it will be a wasted year for naught. If he wants to keep his transfer options open, then DO NOT PLAY THIS YEAR – you will lose a year anyway, but give yourself at least 3 years elsewhere. Players First.

Amen #8 no matter which side of the fence your on with Joker no way should a player with Towels future be jeopardized. It’s to late to pull his redshirt, no benefit at all to him. I question Jokers coaching abilities not his morals so I hope the thought of pulling his redshirt to save his jod doesn’t cross his mind.

Coaches DID blow that play before the half. When they burned their last timeout, they should have kicked the field goal. Either that or a quick pass. They certainly needed to make sure Whitlow knew NOT to take a sack.

And it was a HUGE momentum change for the game and set the tone for an awful second half.

Guys, I hate to piss on everybody’s corn flakes, but the ONLY reason we lead at halftime was because of the way USC played, not the way we played. We caught a few breaks, and played ok, but they were flat out terrible. They overlooked us, they came out flat, and let a bad team feel like they were in the game.. which they weren’t. Ever.

Players were inspired in 1st half as they heard the joke had quit. Score 17-7 UK BUT Players find out at halftime UK has denied the rumors that the joke had quit. Score 31-0 USC Game was pretty simple to breakdown.

    # 10, you think it UK was ahead 24 – 7 at the half, Lattimore would have run a little easier in the second half? You think their defensive line would have rushed the QB a little more gently?
They were flat out BETTER than UK, and it wasn’t even close.

However anyone who knows football or any sport for that matter will tell you the last 5 min. of the first half and the first 5 of the second half are the most important of the whole game. They can change the whole momentum of the game. Rea

Burning Towles Red Shirt being so far into the year, and with honestly no way to save the season would be a total waste of one of Towles eligibility years !!

No matter what, we have to find a more efficient way of getting offensive plays into the game. We also need to teach receivers or anyone eligible to catch the football; if we are 2nd or 3rd & whatever, at least run to the first down line to try catching the ball.

And them violent, while wrestling the pink kitten, and she bites and scratches…hard…for a kitten. My hands are too calloused for Ducky to really draw blood, but she gets her nose swatted anyway. Just sayin’.

In an earlier post I asked what time the train wreck/dumpster fire, with Keystone Kops, and a chinese fire department was. It was at the 29:00 minute of the first half, and it lasted the rest of the half.

Tailgaiting was especially fun, and the crowd that was there was positive, supportive,
and having a good time together. Yesterdays’ crowd was pure class, and represented
the true spirit of UK. All the football-bashing and Eli C. bashing on this site gets
really tiresome. ‘Really don’t understand the mentality of people who only support
their team when it’s winning. ‘Product of the Instant Gratification Generation, I suppose.

Contrary to the people who’ve been saying the first half was only a product of S.C.
not playing well– apparently you weren’t watching the same game we were.
Kentucky played some great ball that first half. Beautiful, in fact.

30 I’ll explain it to you. If you support the team and pack the stadium when you are given a very poor product consistently then nothing changes. This ” Good job, good effort ” BS is why we are so mediocre in football.

” Second place is for first loser. ” Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Joker has to go. Bring in someone like Petrino or Leach who have proven in multiple places against good ccompetition that they can win with a mediocre team. Not some hopeful or some guy who wins with an Ohio State or other perenial power team.

The only reason we played as good as we did in the first half was the fact that South Carolina had zero film on Whitlow. They made the adjustments at half and it showed. If they had the preparation that they did on Smith it would of been a flat out beating.

Nothing has CHANGED…yes, UK did come out and show some fire and energy in the first half but the halftime score was 1/3 UK energy and luck and 2/3’s USC lack of focus and mistakes. The fact that we came out of halftime without any meaningful adjustments shows the coaching staff had no clue as to how to effect UK’s second half chances, and that is why we saw “business as usual” with the 31-0 pounding we took. It should be obvious to all that nothing has changed and Joker needs to move on.

The truth is Kentucky is playing a bunch of Freshman and Sophmores right now that Joker recruited as a Head Coach. Perhaps Joker promised early playing time to sign with Kentucky. I really do not know where our Juniors and Seniors are and why we are so thin with upper classman? Perhaps Joker is doing the right thing playing these guys early looking ahead to next season? It looked to me last night that Kentucky played with a lot of heart and maybe the young players are growing up pretty fast in the SEC.

But Joker better find a way to beat someone (like Vandy, Miss St, Arky, Mizzu, Tenn) or he will lose the fan base that is still supporting him.

Great game to measure where we are and the developement of players.. I thought the game really exposed how really great this team could be and the players showed great poise and understanding of the game. The turning point was not on the players, which were relaxed and confident the first half up until the ending of the first half. The coaches were suprised and confused. Too much time wasted at the half… started managing and not letting the players play and stay relaxed. THE TALENT IS THERE.. !!

They should not burn his redshirt now. Let witlow play…he looked fine may give us a chance to win a few later as his reads get better in passing game b/c he looks good with his feet
