It has been a week since we said our official goodbyes to Kyle Wiltjer in Lexington. His decision to leave the Bluegrass for the greener (?) pastures of Spokane was, in his own words, emotional and challenging. And it is emotional for Big Blue Nation as well, seeing a player that was so well-liked exit the program in this way. Wiltjer was a guy that the fans loved when he was hot from beyond the arc, and he will always be remembered as a player who helped hang banner No. 8.
He is a player with great potential as a big man who can stroke it from outside, but his game still needs huge amount of work. The fans out in Washington are excited — as they should be getting a transfer of this caliber. Let’s see what they have to say about our old friend…
What are we going to call him? Anything special? We have nicknames or ‘shorts’ of just about all of our players. Let’s compile a list here. I have a few ideas:
KDub, KW, Willy, Kyjer, Carl Sanchez
how about klaus the hotdog maker?
“Taz” – He is part Wildcat, part Bulldog, and wants to transform himself into a Tazmanian Devil
Kyle “Water Fountain” Wiltjer.
After his redshirt season I’m hoping we can call him Wilt the Built
The Water Fountain is not a lie, but I’m partial to Klaus. Because why not?
Our perimeter game is going to be insane with those two shooting threes. I honestly don’t think the Zag nation fully comprehends what these two will do together shooting threes. Nunez’s only weakness was his D but I’m hearing he has vastly improved his defensive game during his 1 yr hiatus.
Great news! Potential All American in 2014!
Some Zags fans have real high expectations for Wiltjer. And maybe they haven’t heard about his suspect defense?
I know everyone wants to talk about how Kelly was a shooter hanging out at the three point line all the time as a FR/SO, but that isn’t really true. He wanted to be that guy, but even then he came in and did his part as more of a post player. He took 45 three pointers in his first two seasons compared to 231 by Wiltjer. [Olynyk] was a much more physical and gifted rebounder than [Wiltjer] as an underclassman. [Wiltjer] was a much better shooter.
I don’t know what it means going forward, but [Olynyk] was always the better interior player and it wasn’t even close.
Other Bulldogs fans are keeping it real with the comparisons between Wiltjer and former Gonzaga big man Kelly Olynyk. It is true their games are completely different despite sharing the same position on the floor, but the coaching staff will surely take a page out of Olynyk’s development and try to apply it to Wiltjer.
I am so glad we have Whitjer. He is going to be a GREAT Zag. He has not reached his peak, believe me. That is hilarious to think he has. The longer we wait for Reid to make up his mind the happier I am we have kyle. Reid most likely not coming to Gonzaga. Ive given up on him.
“Whitjer” is going to be a great Zag. Believe him.
Not a typo either. The same poster made the error numerous times.
Possible 2014-15 starting lineup:
Is that good?
A warm welcome to the Gonzaga family, Kyle. Work hard, learn lots and enjoy.
They don’t have a cool name for their fan base, I guess. But yes, have fun out there, Kyle.
