What is the secret recruiting tactic to luring Julius Randle to your school?
It’s not a box of championship rings. Sorry, Roy.
It’s not a bunch of flyers on his front doorstep. Sorry, Scott.
It’s not a connection with Drake or Jay-Z, although that certainly helps.
No, the secret to making a good impression on Julius Randle is red velvet cake — his mother’s favorite. We first learned of the red velvet cake in Jason Jordan’s rundown of Randle’s in-home visits back in September, and today Jordan tells us Julius Randle’s mother, Carolyn Kyles, prefers the red velvet cake from John Calipari over all the others.
“All of the coaches know that red velvet cake is my favorite,” Kyles told USA Today High School Sports. “They talk about it more than me. I would have to say that Kentucky has had the best cake so far, but I’m looking forward to trying the red velvet cake at N.C. State this weekend. They say theirs is great!”
Now we need to know where it’s from. Did Mrs. Calipari make it? And, if she did, did Cal make it home with the container? Or is it an Orange Leaf special? Malone’s, maybe? Rafferty’s?
We want answers. We want the cake. And, most of all, we want Randle.
