In the latest edition of his notebook, the good doctor Jerry Tipton talks to the father of former UK commit and future Gonzaga point guard G.J. Vilarino, who is not to pleased with the way things went down with his son and UK. Mr. Vilarino is understandably frustrated with his son having to change schools and thinks that Calipari made a mistake when letting G.J. walk.
“When it’s all said and done, it’s going to be one of the biggest regrets Cal’s going to have,” Gerry Vilarino said. “Not giving him an opportunity.”
I don’t blame the man for being upset or sticking up for his son, but publically getting down on Calipari while he could be in the middle of landing one of the greatest recruiting classes ever, is a dangerous move. Coach seems to be quite the popular figure at the moment. But, while I fully expect Vilarino’s dad to get hammered, when it comes down to it, you can’t blame the man for sticking up for his son. I plan on sticking up for my son at least once in his life.
Regardless, the play and development of G.J. Vilarino will definitely be what the two people still supporting Billy Gillispie will keep their eye on this year.
