It is a commonly shared opinion that Michael Gilchrist is the best high school basketball player in the country. Not in his class. In the country. Gilchrist, a 6’6″ shooting guard who plays for St. Patrick High School in New Jersey (Derrick Caracter!), ranks as the top player in the class of 2011 and was named as the “Most Promising Prospect” at the NBA Top 100 camp before wowing scouts (at least ESPN’s) with his talent and effort yesterday at the LeBron James Skill Academy. And, he’s a legit 2011 prospect. He’s 15. Basically, Gilchrist appears to be the total package and a recruiting nut’s dream signature. Well, there is some good news out there for the recruiting nuts of the Kentucky variety as Gilchrist’s mom says that her son loves UK and Villanova and that the perception nationally is that he’ll end up in Lexington. But, like all good news, this comes tempered with one caveat: Gilchrist wants to be “heavily recruited” and says that the race for his signature is still wide open.
However, you have to admit that it’s nice to be in the ball game again.
