Getting To Know UK’s New Guys

John Calipari has made it clear over his brief time as UK’s coach that he’s not completely enamored with the idea of having walk-on basketball players simply for the sake of filling cots at the lodge.  So when it was announced today that the Cats had added two walk-ons for this season, it seemed a little out of character.  Until you realize that #LaFamilia is what it’s all about.  Here’s who these two guys are:

Sam Malone:  Malone is a point guard from Scituate, Massachusetts and is the son of former state treasurer Joe Malone, a thoughtful conservative.  Joe Malone is a friend of Calipari and even makes a little appearance in his book, Bounce Back, which is still available through Amazon.  They celebrate birthdays with each other.  #LaFamilia

Brian Long:  Brian Long is a Jersey native who comes from one of the state’s most prominent basketball families.  His brother played as a walk-on for Calipari at Memphis during the mid-2000s and the two families have been long-time pals according to various secret sources.   #LaFamilia

Thoughtful conservative? No such animal, a mindless conservative instead.

Not tryin to start a fight, but your 26 you dont have a clue on how the world works. I have seen sh*t you will NEVER SEE, I have lived threw thing you will NEVER live threw. I’ll say what I think to anyone. As far as me coming to where ever you live and saying something to someone you know. I dont know them so why would I just walk up and say something that may or may not start a fight. Although if you would like to buy me a plain ticket from Iraq, I will take it and I’ll say whatever you want me to; as long as I’m out of this place.

Like I said before I’m not trying to fight with you, but you don’t know everything nore do you know everyone. So you can’t make statements like “you wont say things to people’s faces.”

    Just my thought!

Good thing Gillispie isn’t here. His idea of LaFamilia would be to have the Great Great Great Great Great Grandson’s of Jack Daniels and Jim Beam on the team.

Not that I care a whole lot about walk on’s…but if we’re going to have them, I’d rather have some KY boy that’s life long dream is to play for UK…rather than some Steve Masillo type from New Jersey whose family has a lot of money/influence.

#8 – “Proofread” is one word. Que le escupe para arriba a la cara la cae. KABOOM!

#4 – Last time I checked the U.S. doesn’t have a compulsory draft. Where exactly did you think you were going when you signed up?

yeah…so how about them ‘Cats? They’re gonna be pretty good this year, I hear. #lafamilia

    9) +1 – I don’t like the personal lafimila approach Cal is taking with these two walk-ons. If he wants to make them equipment managers, then ok. But I’d much rather the jersey be worn by walk-ons from the state of Ky.

who really cares. so now we know who will carry the rest of the team’s bags and be given swirlies without mercy by eloy vargas.

#9 i agree with you. Give the spots to some homegrown kids who have dreamed of suiting up in the blue and white their whole lives.

    11. I think you’re right about walk-ons being from UK, but he did give our walk-on player from KY a scholarship (Polson). So we can let him slide one (two) time.

PS. Cant Wii work threw theese proof reed issues. There knot effecting are lifes. Knot like flammable vs inflammable. Lerned that the hard way.

    Lighten up guys!
    Trust in Cal.
He knows what he is doing and we are glad to have kids that want to be here, no matter where they grew up.
Welcome Sam and Brian you are not only
but you are in a big blue fishbowl for all to see!

    Go Big Blue!!!

Coach Cal could do a lot for those kids without giving them UK roster spots. If they are just going to sit the bench, I want a kid from Kentucky! He wouldn’t let Landon Slone be on hte team????? What gives? Give that opportunity to a homegrown Kentucky kid!!!!!!

Maybe they are better than avail Ky walk-ons….but if not we oughta get Ky kids. Can Hobo transfer now?

Cal’s only real PR misstep for me came when he unceremoniously dumped Dwight Perry as soon as he arrived in Lexington. Getting rid of scholarship guys is one thing; they’re wasting a limited and precious resource. However, dropping a walk-on who had already committed more than two years of his life to UK basketball without a hint of glory for it left me cold. It got pushed from Cal’s UK narrative because it happened in the “Holy Crap I Can’t Believe We Got Rid of Billy G and Got This Recruiting Class With a Coach Who Knows how to Use It” phase, but it still bothers me, a small blemish on a largely spotless record while at UK.

Fast forward to this nonsense. Two obvious family favors that will not serve this basketball team in any greater capacity than Perry would have, and suddenly the whole “I’m just not that into walk-ons” statement rings false again. This isn’t a big deal, obviously, for the team, but if Cal sees fit to include these guys on the roster and make their dreams come true, then why couldn’t he have done it for a guy who had already shown a willingness to sacrifice for the team.

That said, maybe Dwight wasn’t amenable to staying on under Cal. Still, it bothers me a little.

All that matters is that they are better than Saul Smith.

Oh wait, he actually got a scholarship (and wasn’t from Kentucky).

Yall think Cal will let me walk on now? I hate louisville. I hate the city, the team, the coach, the smell, did I mention the coach? Anyway, would you guys put in a good word for an ‘ole Kentucky boy to walk on over there in Lexington?

I’ll take any walkon that promises to be on the Deans List. I’m thinking that’s where we are going with these additions. Kudos!!
