Wow.

If this indeed was the last UK-UNC matchup for a while, what a way to end it.

The No. 1 Wildcats pulled out a 73-72 victory over No. 5 North Carolina, thanks to a Anthony Davis block, in front of the most star-studded crowd I’ve ever seen at Rupp Arena.

Seriously, everyone and their mothers were in Lexington for this game. I’ve never seen anything like it.

chadford1

Yep, well that might have had something to do with it.

-About 28 NBA general managers, assistant general managers, and scouts were in town to drool over the future of their league. According to ESPN insider Chad Ford, teams like the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and Cleveland Cavaliers were all in the stands looking for a face of their respective franchises.

-Apparently UK has some political connections. Speaker of the House John Boehner was in attendance. Also actor and Lexington, KY native, Josh Hopkins, Tracy McGrady, Rasheed Wallace, and UK alums John Wall, Ashley Judd, DeMarcus Cousins and Brandon Knight.

Let’s talk about the game.

-Coach Calipari is still undefeated in Rupp Arena. The win over the Tar heels marked his 38th consecutive victory.

-How good is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist? MKG had 17 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block in the win. WORK. When the Wildcats couldn’t find their offensive rhythm he took over and kept them in the game.

-In his postgame press conference Cal said he told Marquis Teague to stand up and give Anthony Davis a hug because “He saved you (with his last second block).”

-Teague has to figure out Coach Cal’s offense…. and soon. The offense just seems to run a lot smoother when Doron Lamb is playing the point and sometimes Teague just doesn’t look comfortable on the floor. Granted, Lamb has more experience in Cal’s offense and big games than Teague, but for this team to have success in March its going to take a concerted effort from our guards.

-UNC Coach Roy Williams praised the Wildcats after the game saying that they have the ability to score at every positions and that it’s hard to defend five guys who can score.

Even though UK shot 56% from the field in the second half, Williams was pleased with the defensive effort of his team.

-Coach Williams added that UK dominated the paint more than he anticipated.

-When asked about the UK/UNC series continuing, Williams said he would like to see it happen but that future scheduling just might not allow it.

-The game was very close, but also very uncharacteristic for North Carolina. UNC came into the shooting 41% from three-point land and finished the game at 61% (11-19). At one point I thought they never would miss. The Wildcats overcame the unconscious shooting of UNC, but every team from now on will test them there.

-After the game Kidd-Gilchrist said “it was a tough one, but we’re the real blue.”

What a game!!! GO CATS!!!!!! #BROWDOWN!!!

More quotes to come.

Unconscious shooting? They were wide open for most of the threes and were uncontested. If UK had defended the three better it would have been a double digit victory!

Never been a Roy Williams fan but he called out Jerry Tipton after the game….

Roy Williams became a UK fan-favorite today @ presser… Reply

    ——————————————————————————–
Roy Williams earned himself a much-loved spot in Kentucky lore today with an INCREDIBLE one-liner. Jerry Tipton is the most hated sports journalist in Kentucky. He writes under the guise of being a UK fan, but pounces on every negative and downplays every positive. Here was an exchange between he and Roy today…

Jerry Tipton: “Roy, forgive me if you’ve already addressed this, but…”

Coach Williams: “Jerry, I’ve been forgiving you for 25 years and so has everyone else in this state.”

Williams did this on national television. UK fans have wanted someone to do that for the better part of three decades. Roy Williams will forever be an alright dude in my book.

Teague only had 1 turnover in Cal’s offense which I think is good. And it is definitely better than the 4 turnovers that Lamb had in Cal’s offense. You and Matt both were incorrect in your analysis and Cal also disagreed with you. Thanks.

NO way. Absolutely NO way we win when they get that many bombs from everyone everywhere and most of the breaks and bounces (e.g.;we block one right to a spectator standing on the 3 point line, whoosh).
NO way without every contribution from every cool Cat.
NO way unless their Valentines are as big as pumpkins.
NO way we can be prouder of that effort and execution under the pressure from such a phenomenally talented and ferocious opponent.

Actually, I believe Beckham is eligible for the UT-Chattanooga game on December 17th. NCAA rules dictate, I think, for a player sitting out in the fall that he can play the first game after the conclusion of the fall semester. According to UK’s academic calender, the fall semester concludes on Friday, December 16th.

    34. I agree, he is a freshman just like the rest of them on the team and it will take time for him to find his groove. There is an added pressure on him to run the team and the fact that no one can create shots for him like he can for the others.

Miller played like a senior today and flat asserted himself when we needed him. Its another scary thing to see how he came out and flat played. Great he did it in front of all those scouts too. He may have helped his NBA chances today. 43 – Floor seats? Then you probably had an excellent view of the bench and the lack of depth at the point guard position. Who do you suppose would run the point when Lamb is out of the game? You can’t beat a team like Carolina without a complete team effort. Our win was not DESPITE Teague, regardless of how he played. As I mentioned earlier, he’ll mature by the end of the year and no doubt be a force on both ends of the court.

Stop bashing on Teague. Last time I checked virtually everyone on the team has trouble at times on the stripe. The more you bash on these boards after one of he biggest victories in Rupp ever, the more pressure you are putting on him for future games. If you remember 2 years ago, Wall & Bledsoe struggled in a lot of games as well.

Hey #12, Jones is now shooting 50% from beyond the 3-point line. Yeah, he had a few bad 3’s that he took today but the guy can shoot out there. He should at least get a pass on 2 to 3 shots per game from out there. It makes the defender step on out there and then he can blow right by them. Great game today from everyone!!! This team is going to be amazing. Only thing I didn’t like is when Miller got that cheap offensive foul call towards the end of the game, hit the shot, and Cal pulled him immediately. Thought he should have stayed out there. He was playing aggressive and taking the game over. I love Miller and am a huge fan now that his aggressive side is coming out. I used to want to punch him in the face before each game just to make him play like a mad man. It’s coming out of him now. Keep it up Miller. All of them were amazing today. GO BIG BLUE!!! I hope every team DOES try to take it outside and nail us with threes. We have length at the wings, and VERY few teams will be lucky to hit 50% on us the rest of the year. face it, UNC was hot from the outside, and they won’t repeat that.

Teague – he had a mechanical flaw in his shot today. His gody was moving away from the basket so he had to give his wrists a little extra filp to get the ball to the rim which made him miss almost everything.

  61. NEWMAN
    6:02 pm December 3, 2011 Permalink

57, Teague shoots a Shaq-like 56% from the stripe. He’s currently a liability in end of game situations, and unless he improves Cal will need to have Lamb run the point in crunch time.

Not to get all BTI, but among starters only Davis has a lower FT% with 53%. Jones averages 69%, Lamb 89%, MKG 75%, and if you wanna throw in Miller he makes 82%.

Everybody has bad days at the stripe but Teague has them consistently (with the exception of Portland when he was 5-6).

I am down on Teague as others are, however, we’re ok. He will progress and as some have said, he doesn’t have to be Wall or Knight with this team. Plenty of other options. He just needs to learn his role, which is similar to the UNC point, and that is to just manage the game. He will figure it out in time. Meanwhile, Lamb can relieve him if need be just as he did today.
