Get into Child’s Pose! (Monday Show Thread)

Deron Williams caught Coach K getting in some yoga before today’s Team USA practice in London. Either that, or he’s bowing down to the Brow. I like the latter. Let’s talk about it on Kentucky Sports Radio.

Join in on the fun by calling (502) 571-1080 or send a text to the TEXTING MACHINE at (317) 385-5148

Today’s the crew’s last day in studio before their grand tour of the Commonwealth. Topics include:

— The Olympics

— Cal wanting IU, UNC, Kansas, and Louisville on the schedule

— Joker gets positive

— Something random

Matt – I’m enjoying KSR’s series about UK groups across the country. You should put together a site or a page that someone can access easily anytime, so when a Cat fan travels, they can pull it up and check where to go watch the game with fellow UK fans.

5- why? there are many, many games with more predictable outcomes for the first weekend where you could make an easier buck. Why would you want to risk cash on a rivalry game? I wouldn’t touch this game with a 10-foot pole. Both teams suck.

Matt, can you talk about the madness that occurs when vouchers are being distributed for big blue madness tickets. I could write several pages about how flawed the process is. A good topic during the slow months of summer and a lot of people can share their stories. This has to change, hand out vouchers the day you arrive and everyone wins. Just saying…..

Here is the thing about KY football. I have been a season ticket holder for the last 5 years. I decided not to renew my tickets this year because of the quality of games that we play. I don’t expect to win the SEC but I do expect us to win all of the cup cake games and be COMPETITIVE in the SEC games. That is the biggest difference between what Joker has done here vs Rich Brooks. Coach Brooks always kept the game close so that you felt interested and felt like you always had a chance. Jokers games are over by halftime and no one wants to watch your team get blown out.

Matt Jones interviewing Joker is a great move. When Jones interviewed Barnhart a month or so ago I left very impressed with Barnhart. He was a guy that always came off as distant, aloof, and I just did not have a good impression of him and his passion for UK and specifically his passion to improve the football program. His interview on this show changed that for me and was enlightening regarding the structural issues holding this program back, like funding and construction of facilities. I think Jokers biggest failings have been in his ability to communicate in a public setting. His performances at SEC media day, one of the biggest and most important days for promoting the program on a big national stage was always disheartening. Hopefully this is the start of a new attitude for him, some swag if you will.

Next interview need to be the new president Capilouto. He needs to step up to the mic. and put some money on the table to improve not only the football facilities but the dormitories as well.

I don’t like that idea. That just further puts the football program under the shadow of the basketball program. If UK football wants to continue to grow and establish its own identity instead of constantly falling under “the football team of a basketball school” category, we don’t need to create a football series with other schools because their basketball teams are good.

Regarding the non conference football games. While I miss the IU series I think the better thing to do is to find non confernce games that either get UK on TV, or find games that in states that we can expand recruiting into. We need to find and play schools in football states and get the UK brand out there and get noticed by players from those states. Why not play FIU (miami)? Georgia Sate (Atlanta)? Rutgers? My point being these games in the past have been picked for their win-ability to pad the schedule for a bowl. But these games could be opportunities to take the UK brand on the road and get some visibility in places where perhaps we can sell the program to recruits there. just a thought

    WOW, just WOW!!
Here is what Joker is up against-seems insurmountable to me.

Tennessee’s loss to Kentucky in November has been a common topic of conversation in Knoxville this offseason.

It was Tennessee’s first loss to Kentucky since 1984. Tennessee fans were understandably unhappy.

And prospects on the recruiting trail noticed. Questions about coach Derek Dooley’s job security filled up the “hot seat” columns during the offseason.

That’s why defensive end Jason Hatcher, who committed to Southern California last week, expressed concern about the loss to Kentucky with Tennessee’s coaches during the recruiting process.

“I told them, ‘You lost to the University of Kentucky. You lose to UK, you lose to everybody because UK finishes last in the SEC every year,” Hatcher told ESPN RecruitingNation.

Hatcher, who attends Louisville (Ky.) Trinity High School, committed to USC last week over Louisville. Tennessee had been in great shape with Hatcher before it lost to Kentucky, he said.

It’s a reminder that Tennessee’s loss to Kentucky and the Vols’ two losing seasons during Dooley’s first two years in Knoxville have negatively affected the Vols’ recruiting. A successful 2012 season for Tennessee is a must if the Vols plan to catch up in recruiting with the 2013 class.

Hatcher’s comments also shed light on the perception of Kentucky football versus Louisville among in-state prospects.

Hatcher, ESPNU’s No. 4 player in the state of Kentucky for the 2013 class, views Kentucky as a “bottom of the barrel” program. Meanwhile, Louisville continues to make a favorable impression on prospects in the state of Kentucky.

“I don’t think Louisville needs to do anything (better in recruiting nearby prospects),” Hatcher told ESPN. “They’re doing good. I’ve just known my whole life that I didn’t want to stay home, that I wanted to explore.”

  212. Head Bussa

I think one of the top three receivers for the season will be senior Eugene McCaskill. He is a lot better than he has ever shown at Kentucky and I’m confident he will come up big for us this season. In addition, I’m really looking forward to watching Martavius Neloms as a senior at safety and Marcus Caffey playing DB. I think Neloms is an NFL player with NFL speed and physicality. He will be the anchor of our defense and will be at least a top two tackler on the team. I’ve always thought highly of him at UK. Caffey, on the other hand, was a fantastic running back in high school who is fast as can be. He probably never had the muscle to hang as a tailback but I think — and from what I have heard — is that he will be a big-time defensive back.

In addition to those previously mentioned players, I think that our defensive line has really been beefing up and, in the words of Rick Minter, they are some are “some big Cats.” Guys like Mister Cobble, Christian Cobble, Tristian Johnson, Patrick Graffree, and Donte Rumph will provide a somewhat formidable prescence up front for the defense.

Lastly, I expect some good running out of CoShik Williams and Josh Clemons. I really thought CoShik really played well when he started the last five games of the season, averaging 4.1 yds/carry. I also am excited about true freshman Dyshawn Mobley, who holds the Tennessee state record for single season rushing yards. Kentucky was on him early with not many big-time schools, but Mississippi State really came after him hard toward the end of last season. Watching videos of him, I can tell he has fantastic vision and some really quick feet. He also is quite beastly at 5-11, 223.

In all, we have some good players coming in and some seniors who have flashed ability over their careers and now have all the pressure on them to be “the man”. Sometimes, when your time comes, you step up and meet the challenge. I hope that is the case for our seniors.
