Last night was an historic night for Kentucky basketball and yet much of the talk this morning has been subdued. Demarcus Cousins, a player ranked anywhere from the #2 to #4 best player in America committed to the University of Kentucky. Yet the excitement seems a bit muted even though he is the highest ranked player to commit to Kentucky since Keith Bogans. Folks this is a commitment that is literally the most hyped kid in the last ten years to say he will wear the Kentucky uniform. That is worth getting excited about.
Demarcus is an absolute freak of nature. He is 6’10”, is able to play on the outside and inside and is virtually impossible to guard, certainly by anyone in the college game. He is the first potential “one and done” player to ever put on a Kentucky uniform and it isnt an exaggeration to say that he may be the most versatile big man to decide for UK since Issel. Now if that is not something worth praising, I am not sure what is. He is a perfect fit for Calipari’s offense and his presence makes certain that no matter what happens with Patrick Patterson and his decision for the NBA, Kentucky will have an anchor down low next season.
As of this point, Kentucky has arguably the best center in America committed to play for it. This commitment has led to a decommitment from the Orton family, but still yet, I cant understand why the Big Blue Nation would not be dancing in the streets. We know that John Calipari is a great recruiter…..but now we have not just reputation, but proof. A player who has never even set foot inside the state of Kentucky is coming here to play his college basketball, thanks to the new man in charge. If that doesnt deserve a “hell yeah”, then I dont know what does.
