Get Carried Through Sunday With The Morning Links

-As you well know, last night marked the final home game for Joker Phillips as head coach. Despite being fired two weeks ago Joker has remained a symbol of dignity and class. Samford’s coach agrees calling Phillips a class act, especially for not running the score up.

-In the game Kentucky rolled over Stamford 34-3 to make it three in a row on senior day. The folks at the Herald-Leader have a breakdown of what lead the Cats to victory quarter by quarter including what was good and what wasn’t.

-While the win was meaningless with Joker already being gone and a bowl game out of the question, the game still meant a lot to the players. So what’s next for Joker Phillips? “I’m going to sleep” the coach said in the post=game conference.

-After getting routed by the Baylor Bears the UK hoops team got back to their winning ways against High Point. The 80-46 margin was almost enough to cover the John Short spread of 55 big-uns but in the end he missed the mark.

-Last night #1 Kansas State and #2 Oregon both got knocked off opening the door to another SEC national championship. What will happen if the fighting Irish were to lose next week against USC?

Kentucky Wesleyan may need a new football coach. Dust off the resume, Joker.

I get the whole Joker being a player and alumni deal…but this is getting a little much…I mean the guy took the program down the toilet in the 3 yrs he was head coach. I am not saying we were elite under Brooks but we had developed a pretty solid program. Get this Joker Joke over with already and move on…it is embarrassing.

I look forward to you ignorant backwoods fools bashing the next ex-coach in 3 years or so. Did Joker finish at UK with a winning record? No, neither did any of our last 10 coaches or so. UK was NOT a pretty solid program when Brooks left. UK was already backsliding to its norm after a good year or 2 with Woodson/Tamme etc. They weren’t elite talent, but they were lightning in a bottle, once in a couple decades players for UK. Get this through your thick heads.. Petrino won’t be offered, Bill Cowher isn’t answering the phone, Gruden laughs. UK faux fans will be pissed that these names aren’t hired, when the reality is no name coach is even going to consider us. Barnhart, thru no fault of his own, will have to settle for Dykes/Smart or some other up and coming sacrificial lamb that can’t win and can’t fill the seats. Hit reset in 3 years and I’ll be laughing at you again. In my opinion, Joker deserves about $20 million for being associated with this fanbase. Before you jump this post, I agree it’s time for him to go. He knows it. But it is hilarious to read comments that he “took the program down”. It was going back down when Brooks left. That’s why he left when he did. LOL, y’all live in a dream world. UK fb is what it is, what it has been, and will always be as long as UK is in SEC. Lower tier.

@13, and Joker should NOT be coaching UK against UT. Both coaches have been fired and need to move on. Let Andre Woodson coach UK.

Kyle – you are either 20 years old and immature or just an idiot. The man has given his life to UK. More than any of us on this blog. Let him leave with the recognition and dignity that he deserves. There is absolutely no harm in letting him coach. Woodson and all the other coaches will eventually be fired also.

#10 you tell me. Is it really necessary to continue to bash Joker? I am glad he’s leaving UK, and of course it was time. So be it. Just get sick of the ignorant b/s tossed about by UK fans. Petrino=selling your soul.
#12 Wait and see. Smart, Klingsbury, Dykes, Butch Jones, blah blah blah. These are the names we hear because they are the only ones UK can realistically hire. And they won’t make a bit of difference, because in 3/4 years when UK fans are tired of 5-7 records again, this will all start again.
#14 I don’t blame UK fans for its failures. I blame the inadequate funding, lack of recruiting base, inability of a dozen past coaches to establish any tradition, lack of facilities, complete black hole of a home state recruiting base. What I DO blame on the fans is inability to accept this, and whiny ass comments as if ANYONE that is “hirable” can fix it. Yeah Mitch is at fault, sure. Just as much as Cliff Hagan, CM Newton, Larry Ivy, etc. Go find a notepad, write the date and time of this post, and tell me I’m wrong in 3-4 years.

10)…Yes, UK was a pretty solid program the last few yrs of the Brooks era…relative to the past. Joker did take the program down significantly from where it was when he was “hired”…that is why only 20K fans are showing up to games and why he was fired after 3 yrs, And UK has pretty modest expectations as it is so that is real accomplishment.

UK can be a mid level SEC team realistically. All it takes is hiring someone who can coach. Call me an optimist but I believe UK has the potential to be mid level SEC program that has a real breakout year every now and again. We just needed to get rid of this joke of coach. Now that that has happened and he has been carried off the field after beating Stamford, hopefully hire someone that is at least worth half their paycheck. Even if we do wind up with an up and comer, he will be worlds ahead of Joker.

#13-My guess is UT, like UK, will not inform you every time they interview somebody. Should both interview Petrino and he ends up at UT, you will all you need for years of complaining.Relax.

    10. Brooks never got shut out at home to Vandy. For you to say the program was on the decline upon his retirement is ignorant. At least he left the program the best in the state and not the laughing stock it is currently.

Thank you Coach Phillips for your dedication to the Kentucky football program. Best of luck to you.

Anyone that thinks the football national championship should not go through the SEC is an idiot. If you haven’t proven yourself against SEC talent you can’t be considered the undisputed national champion. Kansas St and Oregon were exposed last night, Notre Dame could get theirs next week. The SEC in an off year is still better than anyone else until proven different.

@16, I am neither 20 years old or immature. Quite the opposite. You tell me what school allows the coach to continue coaching after he has been fired. Isn’t that why he was fired – because he couldn’t coach and win. Again, UK just being stupid. Heck, even Joker didn’t want to coach. Why would he, he needs to look for another job. And I am about tired of all of this pity party for Joker. Ok, he played at UK and coached here. That doesn’t mean you get a bronze statue outside of the stadium. You all make it sound like we should keep him around for life because of that.

How about UK turn a new leaf in football? Why don’t we at least try to hire a coach that has a winning record? Why not interview Petrino?

#18 I like Rich Brooks. His first 3 years at UK: 4-8, 2-9, 3-8. Yes, he came in during probation, but lets not overlook his record. So relative to the past, Brooks was successful? He finished in the SEC East his last 3 years at 4th (3-5), 6th (2-6), 4th (3-5). Never had an SEC record in any season above .500. So that is what you aspire to? I totally agree that Brooks never had horrendous losses like this year vs. Vandy, Arkansas, WKU. Nevertheless we aren’t talking about Brooks having UK going to BCS bowl games. You are delusional if you think UK will be consistently mid level SEC. Maybe we rise above Vandy again, maybe can overtake Mizzou in the SEC EAst in an occasional year. Good for you.. you aspire to be 4th in the division. We aren’t rising above FL/UGA/USC/TN, and not Bama/LSU/TXA&M/MSST in the West. LOL, up and comer. UK fans laugh at UofL saying Strong was that up and comer and will leave. So UK gets one, he fails (history shows that is likely) or he succeeds and leaves after a couple years. In any event, mark it down. We’ll ALWAYS be back to this point. The point of my post isn’t to defend Joker. But the idiotic statements railing against a guy that had the deck stacked against him from day one just irk me. Just stupid. He was more a victim of circumstance than a cause of failure. Let him go, move on. I crack up when I think of what a prospective coach thinks of the vile treatment an alum, homegrown player and coach gets. Why come here for that?

The celebration of a horrible coach continues… I can’t think of another fired coach getting so much love. The only reason Joker has accepted this so gracefully is because he was relieved to be fired. He was so overwhelmed as a head coach that being fired was the only way out. Who tries to pack the stands and show love to the fired coach. You move on and start building the future!

If you don’t agree with half of what 10 says you are delusional. It is time but damn what if you just got finished putting in 25 years at a company and for whatever reason things didn’t work out. How the hell would you feel if you we’re that man? 25 years? You think he wasn’t trying his damn best to win? Give the guy a break! It is time to part ways but if this is what those kids and the administration wanted then I am happy as hell they got it.
Random thought maybe the admin wanted the time to look for and interview coaches. As stated by 10, not an easy sell to high level coaches. Even if they are making it rain.
