With few big time cross conference matchups during the regular season, bowl performance is really the only true measure of conference strength. Going into yesterday, I felt that two games would swing how the SEC would fare in this year’s bowl games. The SEC came up with victories in both of these swing games with Alabama handling Mike Leach’s vaunted Texas Tech passing attack, and Florida beating SEC nemesis Iowa. The other two games on the schedule appeared to be mismatches in favor of the SEC with Auburn facing Wisconsin and Georgia facing West Virginia. Cash in on those two and the SEC is an impressive five and one with the lone loss being a fairly insignificant Independence Bowl loss by Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks. However, Auburn and Georgia both fell into the age old bowl game trap of believing their press clippings and both essentially lost in the first quarter. Obviously, it is tough for a UK fan to criticize other teams for bringing the conference down, but Georgia and Auburn did just that on Monday.
