You want dorky? I will give you dorky. At a time when most of my friends are planning trips to the beach or excursions to weddings and bachelor parties in exotic places, I took time this week to go to a legal conference. I got excited about the invitation to participate in the judicial conference for one of the courts I used to clerk on and drove to a resort in Pennsylvania so that I could hear folks like the Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Scalia and Justice Breyer speak. So yes that would be dorky enough….but then add to it that once I arrived here and settled in, I spent the evening watching election returns (Obama clinches) and an hour-long interview between Charlie Rose and George Will. Rose, who graduated from my law school, and Will talked about politics, world affairs and the like and I was completely mesmerized. Even though politically I am generally opposite George Will, there is no individual I would rather watch speak, due to his eloquence and masterful intellect. Will breaks down issues like no other political pundit and does it in a way that isnt self-serving or boisterous. I watched Will intently from the hour and made my friend Sarah laugh when I said, “now that was great.” She made fun of me for some time and is certainly correct…..sitting at a 5 star resort, I focus on watching a man in a bow tie talk about the philosphies of Bill Buckley and Patrick Moynihan. Fonzie I am not.
To the news………
(1): The news came hot and heavy tonight as word leaked early in the evening that Matthew Pilgrim, everyone’s favorite former Hampton basketball player was on campus and rumored to be registered for summer classes at UK. I was out of phone range for most of the evening and returned to get three calls that showcase the diversity of information that can come from even those that are connected to the program. All three have good information and all three are sources who I generally believe when they speak. One said that Pilgrim has been introduced to the team today as its newest member. The second said he was enrolled in classes at UK. And the third said that he was enrolled in classes at UK, but his status was still not resolved and would not be completely resolved until the end of the summer. None of those three reports are exactly in contrast to each other, but each has a decidedly different view on what his status with the team currently is, from already on the team to in “wait and see” mode. Regardless, what does seem to be the case is that Pilgrim is on campus for the summer and working out with the team, with intentions of becoming a Cat for the 2009 season. We will learn more about Matthew Pilgrim in the coming days, but for now it looks like the Hampton to UK pipeline is burning up.
(2): Scout.com today reported that Gus Gilchrist, a Top 75 player with major talent has been released from his letter of intent with Maryland today. For those of you that havent followed Gus, he originally committed to Virginia Tech, but was released from that early in the year. He decided to go to Maryland, but the ACC coaches voted 11-0 not to let him play in conference without sitting out a year and a half for signing the original LOI. Following that ruling, Gilchrist decided to leave Maryland and look to go elsewhere. When Gus originally decided to go play for the Terps, he did so with Kentucky, West Virginia and Kansas State as his other top choices. Now that he is on the market, those schools could be interested again. Bears watching….
(3): Watch out this weekend for news coming from the UK Elite Camp. Lots of big talents will be here from future classes and two guys with potential UK ties for 2008: Roburt Sallie and Hunter McClintock. I spoke with Hunter’s dad today who said that his son was looking forward to the trip and that they remained in contact with the UK staff. Reports on Sallie’s interest have also creeped in and it is clear that the former Nebraska JUCO commit is ready for his Lexington visit. Both of these guys are point guards, so it will be interested to see how the weekend develops.
I have legal meetings all morning and some hacking on the resort’s golf courses in the afternoon. We will have reports all day today and (hopefully) the second Kentucky county post, this time Allen County. See ya soon…..
