From Vegas, To LA, To Iowa For Shabazz?

It’s never a good thing when the President of the organization you just got drafted in the first round for publicly calls you out before you’ve even seen the practice floor. Even worse, when they threaten to send you to Iowa, home of the Des Moines Energy NBDL team. Just ask Shabazz Muhammad. We’ve seen some Kentucky players such as Terrence Jones and Deandre Liggins work their way back up through the D-League but I think you would like to at least make it to training camp before doing so. Here’s what Flip Saunders had to say about his first round draft choice:

“In our league, you have to be disciplined and being ‘disciplined’ is being able to adhere to whatever rules are given and you gotta abide by the rules,” Saunders said on the local radio host’s show. “So that’s been disappointing. But when I talk to him, he’s either gonna learn the rules and learn to abide by things with the big boys or he’s gonna really quick learn a geography class: where Des Moines is in the NBDL down in Iowa.”

No girls in your room past 11:00, Shabazz. And keep the door open.

Everyone from California is lazy; it’s the culture there.

The whole thing is a little rediculous and petty. I think he is at the point in his life where he can have people in his room at any hour that he wants. As long as he issnt huring anyone or breaking laws they should just back off.

Upside is if they send him to Des Moines he can rent an airplane and scare the ish out of Royce White for entertainment.

Way to go Flip. Shabazz has always had the “star” treatment and it’s about time he learns what being a pro is all about.

#3 – Uh, I’d suggest you turn your spellcheck back on….

And, hate to tell you but, if you are a professional in ANY vocation (pro sports, sales, law…etc.) there are ALWAYS rules put in place by your organization/company. If you choose not to abide by them, things tend to “not work out” and you don’t make it through your first few months.

Obviously you’re not there yet or you’d be aware of this.

This idiot is going to be a bust; he’s his own worst enemy, his entire life people have kissed his a$$, and his father has totally screwed him up!!

7 uh this its the nba, the fact that you are implying that they have and or follow rules is laughable all in itself. What he choses to do in his free time is what he chooses to do. Go back to your grammar class.

2 – You don’t know what you’re talking about. My 16 year old nephew is taking Anatomy and Physiology this summer at Stanford, yes the school very few are admitted to, yet he was at the age of 16. All the classes he takes in high school are AP courses. He has work he is required to complete over the summer for those classes which he has to turn in the first day of school. He will also take tests the first day of school on the subject matter he studied for those classes over the summer. He is also an elite level runner and won a silver and bronze medal at his first national track meet. He runs an average of 5 miles a day. He has had a number of stress fractures in his feet and legs but that doesn’t stop him. When he is sidelined by one of them he continues to train in the water and on exercise bikes and in the weight room. When he graduates from high school he will already have accumulated more college credit hours than Brandon Knight did when he entered UK and will be well on his way to finishing college early and then med school. But according to you EVERYONE in CA is lazy. What were you doing on your summer break when you were 16?

@9 It wasn’t his free time. It was a camp and the organization is paying for his room. So they can decide who they want in it. And they obviously have rules since they sent him home and now he has to do it again next season. And they can send him to the D league or cut him anytime.

This was last years Wiggins. Both made the same mistake by not going to UK and both are going to end up over-hyped washouts.

Liked him better when I didn’t know anything about him except that he was a great basketball player and was interested in UK. Then word got out the NCAA warned schools about recruiting him, his father was exposed as a bank scammer in the past and also currently, and then come to find out a major reason he was so much better than the kids he played in AAU and high school was because he and his father lied about his age. Turns out he was a 19 year old senior. And now this… he’s made a strong first impression… a BAD one and he’s been called out publicly. Not such a hotshot any more.

Will, that is a very poorly written first sentence. I sometimes question whether the writers on this site have ever taken a grammar class.

One cannot compare Shabazz and Wiggins yet. Shabazz choose LA glitz and UCLA under a dark cloud that followed under Howland’s last few years. After hearing the reports coming out of ESPN and the like, what top pick ( or even parent) would want to be in Westwood. Ones that were biding their time until the draft. It’s why Cal says UK isn’t for everyone. He is going to make them work for it. But Self and Kansas are not much different. Wiggins is going to have more weight on his shoulders at Kansas than he would at UK. Maybe that’s what he wanted to set himself apart. Plus his daddy never lied about his age, unlike w/ Bazz. Randle and Wiggins may battle out for #1 player and #1 draft spot.

15 – The vast majority of my extended family are from CA and I don’t know of a single one of them that could ever be called lazy. None of them were ever given anything and had to work hard for everything they have. I could list example after example of hugely successful relatives who not only succeeded financially but even more importantly were wonderful parents who raised their kids to be responsible productive members of society. When people like #2 stereotype people from another region it is just as bad as other people stereotyping all KY people as backward lazy toothless meth addicts. There is nothing positive that comes out of that kind of thinking. This country needs to start looking for common ground and ways we can move forward together instead of accepting gridlock and blaming the other side for every evil that exists.
