Four Factors that need to go well for Kentucky football in 2012

Last week, I posted on the topic of Joker Phillips’ job uncertainty after this season and said that Joker should be judged in 2012 by improvement, and not necessarily an exact number of wins. Of course, Joker needs to win in 2012, but I don’t think you can just draw a line between two numbers and say that he either stays or goes based on winning 5 games or 6, or wherever you want to draw the line. It’s a much more complicated decision than that, and I am sure Mitch’s discussions with Joker this off-season have been more detailed than “win this number of games” (although that would help him the most). The team could equal last year’s win total but actually compete at a much higher level than they did a year ago. If Joker has another 5- win season or even a 6-7 bowl season, there’s a lot of factors involved that Mitch will have to consider after the season. It’s simply not as easy as saying he needs to win “x” amount of games, but here are four crucial factors that will play a part in Joker’s fate if he doesn’t win 7+ games this year:

1. Competitiveness: Last year, UK was not just beat in the SEC, they weren’t even competitive in the majority of games. For the first time since prior to 2006, they didn’t even stand a chance in most SEC contests. They were absolutely embarrassed in Columbia last year, losing 54-3, and Joker can’t afford to have even one disaster like that in 2012, or Mitch Barnhart will have an easy decision to make in November. Just the year before, however, UK was competitive in just about every game and the team was fun to watch. The staff needs to be creative in 2012 and find ways to stay in games through gadget plays, a wildcat offense as they had with Randall Cobb (try it with Bookie), and whatever means possible to compete in the SEC and to keep things exciting for fans.

2. Youth: In 2005, Rich Brooks completed a 3-8 season and many UK fans were shouting for him to be replaced, but Mitch stuck with him because of the young talent on the roster. Andre Woodson, Jacob Tamme, Keenan Burton, Rafael Little, and Wesley Woodyard were all a part of that 3-8 team and Mitch saw the potential in them and stuck with Coach Brooks to see through their careers at UK. Brooks took over the program in much worse circumstances than Joker, and a 3-8 season would in no way be tolerated in 2012, but a 5 or 6 win result would make a decision complicated if all of the team’s strengths were younger players. If new guys step up on defense and prove to be competent after the departures of Danny Trevethan and Winston Guy, and Max Smith/Patrick Towles, and Josh Clemons have productive seasons offensively, then Mitch could be inclined to give Joker some more time after a 5 or 6 win season. On the other hand, if they win 5 or 6 games and are led by mostly upperclassmen, it’ll most certainly be time for a change.

3. Quality Wins: Despite each of his two years ultimately ending in disappointment, Joker has managed to have one key win in each of his two seasons: South Carolina in 2010 and Tennessee in 2011. Without those 2 wins, it’s doubtful that Joker would even still have his job today. It’s crucial that he adds another quality win or two in 2012 to keep fan interest, fill the seats, and produce the money that UK depends on from its highest revenue-producing sport. Beating Tennessee again would be too little, too late at the end of the season, unless it’s a win that puts UK in a bowl game or even improves their bowl selection. There are two other games that would be huge in keeping fans interested and keeping UK in contention for a bowl: Louisville and (I know this sounds far fetched) Florida. As far fetched as it seems, Florida is only 15-11 in the last 2 seasons  (7-6 a year ago), and is beatable by anyone on a given day in the SEC.

4. Fan Support: As I said before, football is UK’s #1 revenue source. If seats are not filled and there is no excitement among the fan base, even a mediocre bowl season (which we’ve accepted as success in the past) could force a change. UK relies on football, as well as basketball, to support every other team on campus. The 2011-2012 school year was perhaps the best all-around year UK athletics has ever had, but it needs football to do well to continue to be successful across the board. With season tickets already rumored to be down this season, it will take a win over Louisville, strong showings in all of the other non-conference games, and at least a tough early-season fight in Gainesville to kick off SEC play for fans to buy up tickets for the remainder of the season.

So, to be clear on what I mean by “improvement” for Joker to keep his job, I mean that UK will have to be much more competitive every single week, receive significant production from younger players, beat Louisville or capture at least one highly unexpected quality SEC win, and keep fans engaged and showing up throughout the season to bring in the necessary revenue from the football program to support all 21 varsity sports at UK.

Essentially, all of these factors come down to winning, and probably all of these things wouldn’t happen without going to a bowl game. If many people already don’t want to support the football program, certainly not many at all will with another losing season, and probably rightfully so. But before completely writing off Joker Phillips, let’s see what Max Smith or Patrick Towles can do in a full year, let’s see what Josh Clemons can do when healthy, and let’s see what Rick Minter can do in his second season with the defense.

I remember going to the home opener against Norfolk State in 2005. It was sold out. So I don’t think fan support is in question. Sure, we’ve had 6-7 and 5-7 seasons the last two years, but that Norfolk State game was following a 2-9 season in 2004, with quality wins over (gasp!) Indiana and Vanderbilt, and an inexcusable loss to Ohio at home. As a UK fan all my life (I’m 18 years old) I can proudly say I’ve watched this football team grow since the early 2000’s to now. I thought we would have learned from the Rich Brooks experience that a coach deserves a few years before calling for their head. It took Brooks 5 years to reach a bowl game. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that if we can sell out Commonwealth against a d-II opponent following a 2-9 season I think there’s no doubt the fan support will be there following a 5-7 season. I know I will always attend games, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, hockey, baseball, or any UK sport. Any UK fan would feel the same. Go Big Blue!

Joker’s screwed. He can’t recruit because everyone is expecting him to be fired.

MB’s decision to not fire Joker and have to give him the payout is going to hurt Kentucky for years. Next year’s freshman class will be very weak (and only one commit so far)because every kid UK is recruiting is being told by other schools that Joker is going to get fired.
MB’s decision also cost UK the chance to bring in the one coach who would inject instant excitement into the program in Mike Leach. Barnhart has really screwed the pooch on this.

Joker has only been on two teams in his entire career that had a winning record. As a player and as a coach, he has been a loser. Pure and simple.

This entire season is going to be a waste of time; Joker is a horrible coach & his coaching style is as boring as his personality. UK season is going to be beyond embarrassing; Joker lost the fans last year & it’s going to get even worse this year. If UK play on the field wasn’t enough to fire Joker, then the fact UK is losing money from the fans not buying tickets is more than enough reason to kick Joker out.

To be successful, we must beat louisville. We can still have a good season with a loss to the cards but to be successful we must beat the cards. A loss to the cards and a win at a couple of sec schools would be a good season with wins at home. The cards have no choice, they must beat Ky or their season is ruined, weak conf, means a must win for them.

Four Factors Needed for UK Football to Survive

    1. Fire Joker Phillips
    2. Fire Mitch Barnhart
    3. Get the UKAA to get serious about competing in the SEC (if Vanderbilt can, why can’t UK?)
    4. Hire the best young coach available who can re-energize the program.

Fan support will be down nxt yr. but it all depends on the first couple games, UK football is a cycle, we have down years and then one or two exciting yrs. every UK fan I talk to says its painful to watch uk football. Whether its the bad losses, close games with missed chances, or terrible play calling that’s just boring to watch. I watch other programs that aren’t top 25 and they still have exciting games. But UK the last few years has almost lost my interest with the constant screens, and abysmal running game. Being in the SEC it’s hard to be on top so as a UK fan I see a 7 win season as successful, but even then it’s more bout the excitement. Woodsons last year we got to see a stud defense and a QB air it out. Those games were exciting. But last year our defense couldn’t stop anything, and our offense was stalled. With these new QBs that r projected to have a good throwing ability to air it out and make plays can revive our programs interest. We need to see passes more than 10 yards, receivers that can make the catch, and a running back that can explode thru a gap and make a play. If they can make plays, have an aggressive defense, and give a good fight against most of the SEC then fans will be interested, sell out commonwealth, and enjoy the games. Uk fans have nvr been about the overall wins, we have lived and hoped for seasons like the LSU upset year and the close games against auburn, Alabama, and Georgia. If uk does this it’ll bring back the excitement, with the fans, and interest in UK boosting the program. But right now jokers two seasons have seen UK as a pushover in the SEC, boring offense, and a painful abysmal defense which makes fans and recruits turn away from UK football.

The reason we must beat Louisville is they are one of the weaker teams on our schedule. If we don’t beat them, I don’t see us beating any SEC teams. Jokers done, and has been explained on here several times you can not compare Brooks’ first couple years to Jokers. Brooks was on probation, and Joker was named coach in waiting to prevent a drop off. Again we only saw Max Smith last year because Newton got hurt, and how much better is Smith, who we wouldn’t have seen without the injury.

SteveM) Fire Barnhart? Are you crazy? We have one of the top athletic departments in the NCAA. You don’t fire an athletic director who has improved nearly every single sport at the school…improving the football program in Ky is not an easy task…doesn’t matter who it is.

The majority of BBN are realists. They don’t hate Joker per-say, they love UK with all their heart….and….they know we will suck this year bad in football.

For the very, very, few football fans who will suck it up, go out for the first game (maybe 2)….and see what they themselves think, happen….will completely leave UK football this year.

    And it will be done.

#5, you are some what correct on how difficult it is for UK to recruit in football. How many times are people going to write about what UK needs do this year and just as this article mentions, the coach will be fired if he doesn’t do this or that. The enitre BBN gets it. Write something new. Kids that play high school football in the Commonweatlh for sure read these stories. What would you do if you were a high school football player and read these stories. To those that have decided to not support the program this coming season, enjoy whatever you are going to do on Saturday afternoon. To those that remain loyal, please move on. Everyone knows what happened last season. We get it. Tell kids that are attending football camps at UK why they should want to attend UK or simply quit writing stories.

UK gets bashed because we have one commit thus far for next season. Read the above article again. If you were a recruit, would you commit to UK when the news is telling you how much your coaching staff stinks?

Joker needs to see that he has NOTHING for UK Football and step down. 1-2 more years will completely erase the positive steps forward that Rich Brooks made with the program. To put UK admin in a position to have to fire him is about as cowardly as it gets.

Joker is one blow out loss away from getting fired and one signature win away from a contract extension. I say Florida lowers the boom on Joker after Charlie Strong hands Joker his second straight loss to Birds. Joker is out of time, the learning curve is about to catch up to him.

IMO, this will be Joker’s last year at UK. Louisville is going to deeestroy UK with Bridgewater and Co.
SC,UGA,Fla and Mizzou will all rip UK a new one and the west opponents will likely beat UK as well.

Look for 2-10 or 3-9 at best with maybe 1 SEC win over Vandy who will realize how much those 5th year seniors meant last year on defense.

Barnhart then needs to open up the checkbook and hire Kirby Smart from Alabama and let him totally implode UK football from top to bottom.

IM PREDICTING A 4-8, WITH A LONG SHOT BUT STILL ACHIEVABLE 6-6 RECORD FOR JOKER AND CO. MY CONCERN IS SOLELY ON OFFENSE. WHO ARE THE PLAYMAKERS? CAN THE PASS/CATCH GAME BE ON 1 PAGE? WILL THE RECEIVERS (WAIT FOR IT) ACTUALLY C.A.T.C.H. THE BALL THIS SEASON N BE ABLE 2 FIGHT FOR YAC? AND THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN IF WE HAVE CONSISTENT POWER RUN GAME N GOOD O-LINE PROTECTION, WHICH IS THE MOST SUSPECT OF ALL POS. IF WE CAN MOVE THE CHAINS AND EXPAND THE FIELD MORE, THEN THE DEFENSE WILL BE FINE B/C THEY CAN ACTUALLY REST AND LEARN ON THE SIDLINE WHILE MINTER INSTALLS THE GAMEPLAN INTO THEIR HEADS, SOMETHING A YOUNG DEF. NEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN ON THE ROAD AND MISTAKES CAN EASILY AND COSTLY HAPPEN. WITH THAT SAID, HERES MY PREDICTION, GAME BY GAME BY PERCENTAGE OF CHANCE OF WINNING:
[email protected]:45|55 (BORDERLINE TOSS UP, BUT UL HAS MORE ANSWERS AT THIS TIME)
    ~KENT ST:0|100 (SHOULD BE A BLOWOUT)
~WKU:20|80 (JUST BC THEY PLAYED ‘EM CLOSE LAST YR.)
[email protected]:35|65 (ITS STILL FLA, DONT LET LAST YR. FOOL U)
~SC:75|25 (REMEM. LAST YR? CLOWNEY WILL HAVE A FIELD DAY AND LATTIMORE WILL SIT THE 2ND HALF)
~MSU:53|47 (COULD THIS BE THE TURNING POINT? HOPEFULLY, BUT ANOTHER ARGUABLE TOSS UP @ HOME)
[email protected]:40|60 (I [email protected]#$$D UP DOWN THERE, BUT MY FORMER TEAM WON’T @ HOME..TOO MUCH KNILE DAVIS)
~GA:80|20 (THEY WILL DO WHAT SC DID TO UK LAST YR. TOO LOADED)
[email protected]:35|65 (MIZZOU QB WILL BE ONE OF THE TOP QBS IN THE FBS NEXT YR..AND HES DUALTHREAT)
~VANDY:50|50 (ALWAYS A GOOD GAME, EXCLUDING LAST YR. AND THE CATS ARE @ HOME SO THAT SHOULD HELP)
~SAMFORD:0|100 (WHO AND WHERE THE HELL IS SAMFORD)?
[email protected]:48|52 (IF A WR FORCED 2 PLAY QB, WHAT YOU THINK TOWLES WILL DO? BIGGEST AND ONLY ROAD WIN)

WITH THAT SAID JOKER JOB STATUS AFTER A 4-8 SEASON WILL AND SHOULD BE BASED ON PROGRESS AND COMPETITIVENESS AFTER ALL, UK DOESN’T HAVE 5* JUST POURING IN BUT IF YOU WANT TO SEE WINS IMMEDIATLY, ILL BE OVER MY STUNDENT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS CONDO I PAYED FOR WAITIN ON THE CALL TO PULL A OLD RICKY P SINCE I LOVE STABBIN PROGRAMS N THE BACK! GO BIG BLUE!

What you guys don’t get is that Barnhardt opposed Calipari coming to UK in the first place until influential alums pushed him and Todd aside and made it happen. Thus, he gets zero credit for the re-surgence of UK basketball (all following on the heels of his Gillespie hire). He hired Joker to avoid having to bring in a more expensive quality coach and has scheduled Charleston Southern, Akron and Samford home games in an attempt to go 6-6 and get a bowl bid. His successes inother sports is fine, but not in the big conversation.

First of all, I believe Joker is GREAT for our University. A quality man who can help kids become better men. BUT – he is not a very good football coach. Last year in spring and Summer he spoke of how “fast we were….quckest team we had since he has been here…” then when we started losing…..well he offers…”we can’t match the speed of the SEC…” the problem with each of those statements…..HE WAS THE MAN RECRUITING THESE KIDS! We won with his recruits under Brooks….the 2 * played like 4 * because they got COACHED UP. Now since he has cleaned house of the staff under Brooks…..No one is getting Coached up anymore….and that falls directly on head Coach. I had a High School coach tell me of going to a camp and his take of the film they offered to the HS staffs showed him that UK is not taught physicality but finesse. Well, we are not gonna out finesse ANY SEC team…..Our Coach cannot recruit those kids. I went to two (2) games last season…..and the product on the field was not SEC caliber or even Big Least caliber….and that plainly will not get it.

#35–The players I saw on the field for the Blue/White game looked awfully small to me, especially the defense. Also, I was not impressed by any back and they looked a little slow to me. Now, I know looks can be deceiving, but given the schedule they play this year, I just don’t hold out any hope. The gauge (I think) will be how they handle Louisville the first game. If they get clobbered, this season ain’t gonna’ be pretty…

Football is my favorite sport, and I support UK football big, in very meaningful ways (to Mr. Barnhart). Unfortunately, my support has not been repayed with the presence of “football” in Commonwealth in a while. UT was great, but a fluke of circumstance.

Joker absolutely has to get inventive. He can’t go toe to toe with the big boys. If George Washington had tried to fight the British toe to toe we’d be singing “God Save the Queen” this week during her Jubilee celebration. He’s gotta get mean, and creative, play the joker card.

It kills me to see Joker Destroying everything that Rich Brooks built. Any decent coach could have taken over where brooks left off and been successful. I was told by someone that was recruited by UK that Joker’s recruiting is bad because he tell’s the kid’s that he will not offer unless they are going to commit. 2nd off I was told by someone who was a outstanding high school football player here in UK and was recruited by other better schools then UK but wanted to play at UK that joker wouldn’t offer him a scholarship because he was white. As bad as I hate to say it UK football is on a quick down hill to the bottom until they fire Joker. Should have taken leech when we had the chance. Thank you MB for your smart move there.
