Forbes: “Why Pitino Survived and Petrino Didn’t”

ಠ_ಠ.  à² _ಠ.  à² _ಠ.  à² _ಠ.  à² _ಠ.  à² _ಠ.

With their Louisville and philandering connections, it was inevitable that we would compare Bobby Petrino and Rick Pitino’s cases.  In fact, comparing the two is one of the first things everyone did.  At first, it was fans and bloggers.  It seems ‘real publications’ are jumping on the train – Forbes just posted “Lessons From An $18 Million Affair: Why Rick Pitino Survived a Scandal and Bobby Petrino Couldn’t.”  The piece is written by Allen St. John.  And that’s a cool name, if do say so myself.

St. John starts by hitting on why Petrino failed to appeal his firing – his buyout was on the line and he had to do whatever he could to salvage that ship.  Here, Petrino starts with no way to seem like the good guy.  Police reports, phone records, and his mistress Jessica Dorrell’s job and car all violently pointed fingers at him.  He has no way (as of right now, it seems) to paint his picture any prettier than the disaster it already is.  He’s the bad guy here, no way around it.

Pitino, however, had a few loopholes that saved his job according to St. John:

– The money that Pitino paid Sypher came from his personal funds, not from the University.

– And when the scandal threatened to go public, Pitino came clean to his bosses and authorities.

Petrino may have eventually came clean and paid the $20,000 on his own, but the job Dorrell acquired via their illicit affair really makes things hairy for the school.  What both men did was utterly deplorable, but I think Pitino had another reason he was able to use – they were able to show Karen Sypher as a lying, lunatic sociopath and sue her in court, something that has not and probably will not to Dorrell.

With no other villain than himself, Petrino had to bite the bullet.  St. John makes a good point that, for whatever reason, we continue to see happen:

There’s a simple lesson here, but powerful men keep making these mistakes over and over: they entangle their messy personal lives with their work lives, and when they get caught, they try to cover it up.

How people can so easily dismiss Sypher marrying RTS’s employee amazes me. He essentially used uofl funds to pay her off for years and gave the guy at least one promotion. Falling in love after driving her to get an abortion? gimme a break…

Didn’t Pitino over school funds to give the manger a pay raise to go to Sypher?

Pitino’s affair only lasted 15 seconds. Hard to fire a guy for that. It would have been plain mean after that humiliation.

I believe there are some differences, but obviously the AD of Arkansas has more balls and ethics than UL’s

Crazy part is that Pitino’s actions were far far worse.

Pitino should have been fired as well.

FYI – Pitino is playing in a Pro-Am golf tournament this weekend and had good things to say about Kentucky. Just saying ……

Jurich and Pitino are cut from the same cloth. I’m sure tommy turtleneck has been in the same boat as 15-teeno, so he could empathize with him. Arky’s AD obviously has nothing in common with bobby p, Long actually has some morals. Rick and Tom are known for being on constant p*ssy patrol…brother’s keepers for sure!

Also, at least Petrino banged a 7, Pitino knocked up a 3.

It’s very logical, Pitino could not be found after 15 seconds!

Went to the UofL Red vs. White spring game today. There were so many fans there. Coach strong said there were 15,000 but I would say there were a lot more. I enjoyed watching the teams play. Both sides were deep at every position and there are so many options. Teddy Bridgewater was moving very well and throwing bullets. Devante Parker was quick as lightning. #10 was almost impossible to tackle…straight up beast. Sonrise Perry, freakin elusive as heck, dang! Strong even said our kicker would be our weakness but he kicked a 52 yarder. This team is DDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!

There were a handful of UK fans there too. They seemed to be having a good time and enjoying the stadium. I can’t wait for football season. I think we have a good CHANCE to run the table and make it to a BCS bowl again. I love living in the Ville. So many things to do, not just basketball…

Go Cards! L1C4!! I’m glad we got rid of Petrino!

9 – You nailed it. Jurich is a known drunk around town and was also a late night patron of Porcini’s back in the day. That Porcini’s shit started as soon as Pitino hit town. And there is a long line of UL groupies that have upped that thang for the Cardinals power men.

Pitino has loyal assistant coaches, associates, local media and friends(HIS BOYS) around him that protect his image. Petrino obviously did not.

    13. You tard fans are hilarious. Your pathetic ghetto commuter school plays in an OVC level football league. Maybe the tards can toughen up the Big Least by adding Trinity or Highlands. You wannabes will never amount to anything in football. Strong will be gone after next year- not that the moron has done anything. L yes you commuter school fools blow.

The tards didn’t have 7000 fans there for their commuter school scrimmage. You idiots can’t count but being tard fans, that is understandable.

Petrino could have/would have survived the scandal if he hadn’t hired his mistress to his staff.

I’m sorry. Chris, please correct the “Petrino may have eventually came clean ” to read “may have come clean.” Great article; but, grammatical error was awful.

I know it’s not the same, but didn’t Pitino admit – in a Federal Court – that he told Sypher ‘I can’t give you any more money, but I can try and get your husband a raise?’.

Maybe I have that wrong (him admitting it), but that’s basically promising funds via a State Funded University. Always thought that aspect should have received more play. His cover-up that included marrying this woman off to his flunkie shows complexity that Bobby P could only dream about.

22 Sarah, I noticed that too.

BTW, have you ever considered changing your last name to Blue&White? 🙂

Next, if this situation would have occured with Petrino while at Uavel, you can bet your last buck that Jurich would NOT have fired him.

These types of situations feed the ego that drives the Pitino’s and Petrino’s; you see it in politicians as well.
