Football Stadium Upgrade Updates

ribbon-boards

Yesterday, the UK Athletic Association released its operating budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year. Among the approvals for mouth guards, socks, and Jon Hood’s dip cup was a whopping $1.95 million dollars in upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium. That’s right: bring on the scoreboards!

Here’s how the $1.95 million breaks down:
– $1.65 million for the new endzone scoreboards
– $150,000 for concrete/structural repair
– $150,000 for steel painting around the stadium

Since the bidding process is ongoing, details about the scoreboards are still hazy, but Mitch Barnhardt hopes the upgrades will include “ribbon boards” to replace the Hall of Fame ring around the upper deck (don’t worry, Mitch assures us he will find another way to honor UK’s greats). The bidding process should be finalized in the next few days. The new scoreboards and other upgrades will be in place for the home opener on September 10th.

Keep it up, UKAA.

If they bidding boards are going to show nothing but adverstisements (or even 50% ads and 50% game info) then why not have the advertisers sponsor them?

Don’t ask such intelligent questions….there has to be a good reason, I guess.

Make beer legal at Commonwealth. Put a draft beer tap on every seat. and we need stripper poles too.

4…90% of the names in the ring of honor are unknown by 90% of UK fans. It doesn’t matter.

I assume this is in addition to the private funding of the new end zone scoreboards?

Why would they go to such expense to give fans MORE ways to remind them of the score? It seems backwards.

I don’t understand why there’s still this much negativity towards the UK football program. It’s a solid program that is still on its way up. Get behind them. Go Blue.

now, if we can just score enough points to make those scoreboards light up…That’s going to be the real problem…

Thank you Adam for your positive remarks for the UK Football program.Yes they are solid, and the foundation is being built, but it takes time and dedication, and besides that, the things that are the hardest to get are the most satisfying!

The naysayers will jump on this, and bring up the negatives, but you have a head coach,an alumnus, who will continue to build, the right way,and the legal way.People forget the fact, that they almost beat Auburn, and did beat the other representative in the SEC Championship game.

Actually, the entire cost of the project is $6.2 million.

The $1.65 figure makes up the difference in the $4.6 million withdrawal from the UKAA’s quasi endowment fund earlier approved.

I am all for it. We should be spending even more on the football program.

Adam, thanks very much for your positive support of the football program. The naysayers will read this and rehash all of the negatives.

Auburn barely scored with time running out to beat Kentucky, and we beat South Carolina, and these two teams were in the SEC Championship game, and look who ended up as the National Champion.

Keep up your positive support.UK has an outstanding coach, just ask people like Lou Holz.Joker will get the job done, the right way,the legal way!!

Keep up your support, and the rewards will come.

I would have painted it for half that and spent $10K of it in Vegas on liquor, drugs, tattoos, and strippers in one weekend.

    Can we get a do-over?

Yes! Finally! The more the better! Let’s make Commonwealth a showplace! We need more personality & tradition = 1.Play “Blue Moon of Kentucky” like Rocky Top. 2. Giant “K” @ midfield & “Pattern of Excellence” in the endzone. 3. White helmets w/K on the side & stripe down the middle. 4. More parking lots for tailgating + parking passes for all season ticket holders. 5. “GO CATS” to be said like ROLL TIDE. 6. Play classic rock music @ games. 7. Blue/white shaker poms in seats. 8. Bring back song “We’re From Kentucky”. 9. Play “K-E-N-T-U-C-K-Y Means Paradise”. 10. Hell’s Bells

Why don’t we paint the uber-attractive outside, I don’t know, BLUE and WHITE! In the 70’s, they thought multi-colored seats in Rupp and beige sheet metal was the way to go. Now we know different.
