Football Predictions (and Odds!) Picking Up

John Anthony says put the house on UK – Ok, maybe just the $10 you found on the ground last week

Since today is the kick-off of the July recruiting period, a football post is obviously the right choice.  Ok, not really.  But, this obscure article from Doc’s Sports Service (handicapped handicapping for 40 years now!) lays out some predictions and gambling odds for the 2011 Kentucky Wildcat football team.

First thing’s first: we have Aaron Cordero here at KSR (locked in the compound’s basement with a phone and a computer til Fall) so there is really no need whatsoever to post the insights of some random guy out in the interweb.  Aaron’s up there with the best when it comes to UK football.

With that said, let’s take a look at a few highlights from this article — This guy says that Joker wants his team to ‘play fast’.  He discusses the obvious losses of upperclassmen and draftees on the offensive side of the ball and the need to replace them.  Like me, he thinks La’Rod King has a chance to be an impact player this year.  He like UK’s defense next season, but thinks we need to improve on getting the opposing QB’s.  Blah, blah, blah.

Also, he thinks we have a running back named Raymond Sessions.  Obviously, this guy is an expert.  Ramon Sessions does play in the NBA though, so he was semi-close in that it was another athlete with a similar name somewhere in the world.

Now, what’s important.  This guy predicts the Cats to finish near .500.  Fair enough, I guess.  He labels the Florida game as a chance for the Cats to make a statement.  As far as gambling odds, he had this to say:

Despite it being a bit of a down year for the SEC East, the oddsmakers aren’t high on the Wildcats chances in this division. JustBet lists Kentucky at +850 to win the SEC East. What about their chances to win the SEC Championship Game? JustBet has listed Kentucky at +5,000 to win the SEC title game.

Now, we at KSR do not promote illegal sports gambling in any way, shape, or form… but isn’t it just so fun!  I’m not one to ever bet on the team closest to my heart (and brain because being a UK fan affects my sanity), but when those are some pretty large odds.  UK as the SEC Champs seems like something that could only take place in a far off fantasy world, unfortunately, so you may just be giving money away.

So… my questions are:

Would you lay anything down on those odds?

And what do you predict for next season’s football team? (schedule link)

definitely no more than 6 wins

    Western- W
    Central Mich- W
    Louisville- Honest Toss Up
    Florida- L
    LSU- L
    SC- L
    Jacksonville – W
    Miss St- L
    Ole Miss- L
    Vandy- W
    GA- L
    Tennessee- L

Thats 4 with a toss up at Louisville and I think we can pull 1 upset this year with either Ole Miss or Miss St.

    2 – Don’t be ridiculous.

We will win the 4 OOC games, and beat vandy. That’s 5 already. I would bet they we beat at least 1 of the 2 Mississippi schools that we both play at home. No chance against South Carolina and Florida. We could pull off a big unseen win against either UGA or UT, with UGA being more likely to pull off 7. We will probably win 6. There is no chance we miss a bowl.

Every year that I believe UK will be terrible, they surprise me.
I say Victories over WKU, CMU, UofL, Jacksonville, Ole Miss, Vandy and Tennessee.
Music City Bowl here we come

I’m done with thinking we will ever beat Tenn. Every year I think we have a chance but we end up playing poorly or we do something stupid. Last season was the last chance for me. I’m done. We will never beat those bastards. 5 wins this year.

    4-8

Hell…if this new Vandy coach has a few tricks up his sleeve on the field like he seems to have on the recruiting trail, maybe 3-9.

4- meant to say 1, not 2 my bad.

and #10-Don’t be freaking ridiculous. Vandy will lose most of those recruits following their upcoming 3-9 season and second straight winless year in the SEC. They are awful, just like louisville will be. Some of you people on here are WAY over the top ridiculous when it comes to UK football. Seriously. It’s embarrassing.

    Anthony Bennett
    Devonta Pollard
    Archie Goodwin
    Perry Ellis

Great class but no electric talent. Would you be happy with this class?

louisville will make or break our season. we win and we are undefeated with lots of momentum going into SEC play. The Joker heat goes away and i think we could win up to 8. we lose and the fire joker party starts. we are 2-1 into conference play and we start hearing “when does basketball start” from the fairweather fans with no momentum, FLA blows us out and the fans stop showing up. operation BEAT LOUISVILLE

Wins: WKU, Central Michigan, Louisville, Jacksonville State, and @Vandy

    Probable Win: Ole Miss

    Tossup: Mississippi State and Tennessee

    Probable Loss: @Georgia, Florida

    Losses: @South Carolina, @LSU

Since our resurgence in 2006, there has been an upset each season yet we also manage to lose one we should win. The upsets were 2006: UGA, 2007: UL, Ark, and LSU, 2008: Arkansas, 2009: Auburn and UGA, 2010: South Carolina. Using that logic, Louisville, Ole Miss (most likely if any), or Vandy could be the one we should win but lose. That leaves Florida, Georgia, or Tennessee as this years likely upset victim. I honestly think Florida could be the one. New Regime, new system, early in the year.

I’m going to say 7-5 but would not be a bit surprised at 8-4 or 6-6. 5-7 and 9-3 are possible but very unlikely. The schedule shapes up well for us but probably not 9-3 well.

No more than 3 or 4 wins. Joker is similar to former U of L coach Steve Kragthorpe. Nice guy, but not very good coach.

This guy “expect[s] a finish right around .500”. Kentucky has been 6-7, 7-6 and 7-6 the last three seasons. He is really stepping out on a ledge with that bold prediction.

put me down for $100 bucks to win the SEC East, and $100 bucks to win the title game. $85,000-585,000 is a good payoff on a $200 bet. Hell, there are only 11 other teams to compete against right? Yea you’re probably right….can’t me out.

    27) You have a slight math error in your calculation. +850 means it is 8.5/1 that we win the East. Not really that great of odds considering we have NEVER done it and we major question marks. You are better off betting individual games because I think we have the ability to keep some SEC games close and maybe even pull out a couple (whoops…..inadvertant Pitino pun there!!).
