Florida Lost Almost $1million on Sugar Bowl. Who’s to Blame?

SadFloridaFanIsSad

His sadness gives me strength.

News broke last week that the esteemed Florida Gators, who (allegedly) love themselves some football, maybe don’t even like it enough to make sure their school breaks even in the postseason.  Apparently, despite the trappings of a destination BCS Bowl game in New Orleans, the University of Florida was unable to sell all of its seventeen-and-a-half thousand tickets, and took an $840,000 hit right to the baby-maker wallet.  In fact, the Sugar Bowl brought in fewer fans than the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham.  Bir.  Ming.  Ham.

What’s wrong with the Sugar Bowl?  Kentucky fans would swarm that place like it was free crawdad night on Mardi Gras.  It’s a BCS game, the SEC’s top destination (after the championship game, of course), and it’s played in Blue New Orleans (can’t really call it that in January… yet).  It seems like a perfect way to unload some overpriced tickets on your supposedly fervent fanbase.  And yet, the Gators had to chomp, and swallow, a big loss.  Why?

Of the reasons CBS Sports lists in its report, one in particular stands out.

Despite all the victories, the Gators were never an exciting offensive team, the Sugar Bowl was played on a week night, and despite the Strong connection, few Florida fans would call Louisville a marquee opponent.

Uh-oh.  Apparently Florida has Louisville to blame for not being able to sell out its ticket allotment.  For a team that’s used to playing every week against the Alabamas, LSUs, and Georgias of the SEC, the Big East’s premier squad is not exactly a big draw.  Let’s be fair: Louisville won that game.  Maybe if Florida had some fans show up, that would have made a difference.  Probably not, but you never know.  That said, it’s fun because this is essentially an insult to both teams.  Florida fans didn’t care enough to show up to their own BCS Bowl game, which their team lost.  And Louisville takes part of the blame for its opponent not taking the event seriously.

Safe to say, with Kentucky hosting 50,000+ for its Spring Game, I don’t think 17.5k would be difficult to sell for a BCS game.  Maybe that’s just me.  And UK’s not even a “football school.”  What’s your excuse, Florida?

The world is just not right when Louisville is good. God did not mean to create a world where the dirty birds are relevant.

A shame when a top program loses money in a bcs game. And New Orleans is an easy drive from most areas of Florida.

Fla plays for championships. The sugar bowl was not their goal, and lville has no reputation of being a powerhouse. That explains the lackluster performance on the field and in the stands for me. People say lville beat Fla, which uk cannot do, but uk plays a motivated fla team each year to open the conf season. Lville got an unmotivated fla football team.

I have always thought it was ridiculous that schools lose money on these games when there are so many other people making a lot of money off of it.

So would it be comparable to a less than exciting UK basketball team playing in a post season game that neither its fans or players cared about? Of course UK did not lose $1 million by playing Robert Morris, but how many UK fans showed up for that game (or would have showed up if they could get a ticket)? I lost interest and quit watching out of frustration early in the 2nd half. Point being, it’s understandable, outside of the venue, why Gator fans didn’t care.

This is no big deal, it happens almost all the time with bowls. Someone obviously didn’t see the Real Sports ep on HBO about College Bowls.

You aren’t allowed to bash Florida until you beat them.

You aren’t allowed to bash a school in a BCS bowl until you get there.

You aren’t allowed to bash a team that went 11-2 if you go 2-11.

You aren’t allowed to brag about attendance when BBN brought 18k to a home game last season.

You aren’t allowed to brag about your recruits until you win more than two games with them.

    10. Apparently spelling is frowned upon a UofL. “Reaf”. Feel good to puff out your chest after 1 good season ay? 3 years ago would you be saying something? No. 1 quality season doesn’t put you at the top of college football.

@GetReaf, In case you haven’t noticed this is a UK website where we can bash whoever we please. Your rules mean nothing here. If you don’t like it or think it’s unacceptable you can visit one of the other UK sports themed websites, or perhaps visit one of Louisville or Florida’s. Untill then, just be greatful YOU are “allowed” to visit KSR and comment. Have a nice day.

“GetReaf” would have a debatable point if it wasn’t stated as “You are not allowed to brag” or “You are not allowed to bash.” Instead Mr. or Miss “Reaf” should have said “It’s silly to Brag about….” or “It’s laughable to bash when….” No point is made by making up ones own rules about how others should view, write, or talk about sports history.

Unfortunately, you all will never get the opportunity to distribute those 17.5 K tickets since you will never reach above the Music City Bowl. Win more than 2 games in a season before you start tearing down 2 programs (UofL and Florida) that are miles ahead of yours.

The vile fans said similar things when we best Clemson in a Bowl after they had beaten the Wake Forrest squad that played the ill in a bowl . Anyone who has played will till you sometimes the Karma just ain’t right and you lose. In conference games, peolple that have whupped your sorry butts time after time have a mental edge.Didn’t the ill catch an uninspired 7-5 Alabama team several years ago? Haven’t we played the likes of Flogrida when they were unbeatable and give them scares until the LAST play of the game? Louisville won, did they beat an uninspired Florida? Is Munchamp the same as Spurrier or Meyer? Who knows. Who had the most to prove. CHARLIE STRONG and he did. Trash talk. Petrino said the SEC conference games just beat you down and unless your Bama, Florida, LSU and the Georgia’s, Auburns used to be Tennessee your too damn beat up to beat anybody. Does anyone REALLY THINK THE VILLE WOULD BE IN A BCS BOWL IF THEY PLAYED IN THE SEC OR THE BIG TEN? CHARLIE STRONG DOESNT THINK SO

First of all, this is a UK fan site. Second of all no matter who we are fans of. We can break down issues of other teams. ESPN and other sport sites do it for a living. Every sport fan does if for entertainment. Just because a florida fan is butt hurt because their team came out against a lesser UL team and played uninspired. Does not mean they can make rules for other fans. As for UL fans, they will always feel second fiddle and come across as whiney for as long as UL stays a city college. If you dont like it go to your team’s own fan site. See ya!

Number 6, I must say that I disagree. Many real fans tried to get into Robert Morris’ high school-sized gym. There might not have been the championship type of excitement, but UK fans always support their basketball programs no matter what the circumstances. For that matter we typically support our teams regardless of records. Other fan bases have much to brag about, but UF couldn’t even fill their own basketball stadium after they won two championships.

Do you actually think they get pumped up to play a UK team they have beaten 26 times in a row in a half empty stadium?

UofL sold all of their allotted tickets, and sent a reported additional 16,000 fans down to Nola. You’re delusional if you think it’s an insult to the Cardinals that someone else’s fanbase disrespected them, even though they themselves took the city over. Just more BBN delusion, though. #ComeBeA2-10Hero

#4 you’re crazy if you think Florida is motivated or up every year to play UK. Did you even watch the drubbing last year. Florida sleep walked that entire day and still 38-0. UK is usually after the UT game and prior to LSU or SC. They aren’t particularly motivated for UK.
