Florida averaging 4,998 fans per game

Florida’s basketball team may be in the top 10, but judging by their dismal attendance numbers, their fans wouldn’t know. According to The Gainesville Sun, the Gators are averaging 4,998 fans per game this season, which is drastically lower than the announced attendance average of 8,914 (sound familiar?). The low point? Only 3,095 fans watched the Gators take on Savannah State on November 20th.

Even the Kentucky football fans who went to the Vandy game are shaking their heads at that one.

They’re saving their pennies for the epic Sugar bowl matchup.

Donovan’s done a good job there for a school that is so clearly a football school. Sad they don’t appreciate basketball

Makes you wonder how in the world UK would ever lose out to Florida in recruiting with any player. Not saying that we have recently per se, but why would any stud want to go there an be second fiddle to football and have that kind of fan reception at ball games. What an Fn joke. Donovan you can have gainesville buddy.

They might laugh but 4,998 as a percentage of facility capacity is much higher than the number of UK fans filling the capacity at CWS for the Vandy game. Facts are funny things…

#8, paint it like you want, but those fans going to the football game were braving dismal weather and an even more dismal football team. UF’s basketball team is ranked in the top 10, and they can enjoy a climate controlled environment. NO. EXCUSE.

If it were not for the money and the fact that UK is a charter member, they would be much better off in a conference that actually appreciates basketball like the Big 10 or even the ACC. The SEC’s support of the sport of basketball is an absolute embarrassment.

They probably just don’t want to watch really bad competition. It’s kind if like our home schedule this year. So if you schedule a bunch of cupcakes at home because you know you’re going to play in an early season tourney or have a nice road game scheduled but then you’re stuck in a conference that is not even top 5 in power conferences and lags behind the A10 o course no one is gonna watch. Florida is really really great this year so it sucks that they aren’t playing anybody, we on the other hand are lucky because we suck this yr. Our players need these games against Transy and Lipscomb to pad their resumes for the NBA. Or do you really think Poythress or harrow could go off against an ACC, B12, B10, Beast conf schedule? No that’s part I why Cal can recruit these guys

Uh yeah, I think Poythress did pretty good against the number 1 ranked team in the country this year, who happen to be from the ACC.

#9 you are so wrong. Just stop. UK is about to generate so much money with the new SEC tv deal that the competitive advantage they will have over every non SEC school in America will be silly. Please stop with this garbage that UK would be better in the ACC or Big Ten. Its false in every way.

UK’s Vandy FB non-attendance was all about boycotting the poor team, coaching, and administration. Florida’s BB non-attendance is all about apathy and just a fan base that couldn’t care less. I hope all recruits see this.

Living down here I can say that this is accurate. They don’t care as fans about the program. They expect it to be good (and Billy D has done a good job), they forget that prior to Billy they pretty much sucked hind tit. They expect it to be good and they don’t need to show up. Their students do show up though and do a pretty good job. Even when UK comes to town they don’t sell out. It is sad. Same thing for FSU they just don’t care how good or bad the team is.

14, go back and read what I said leading off in my statement: “If it were not for the money”, and that’s all fine, but on the basketball side of things, the SEC overall is an absolute embarrassment. Going undefeated in the SEC is kind of like bragging that you are the tallest midget.

That is still more than show up for LOSERVILLE games. Unless they are playing UK they dont get 3,000 at a game. They will forever be our little brother!

Wow, thats shocking. How can a top-10 team have such poor attendance? Because its a football school in the SEC. I still don’t understand how they land top recruits in bball.

  25. RealCatsFan
    1:57 pm December 21, 2012 Permalink

Will, this is one thing that I will agree with you on – I cannot understand why a top recruit would want to go a school that plays second fiddle to a football program, only to play in front of empty stands with regional TV coverage at best. The same goes for Wiggins considering Florida St. So why isn’t anyone questioning why programs like these are pulling in these top recruits? Must be paying them, right? At least that is what the haters would say.

#26, valid point if you are talking about the football program at UK being overshadowed by the basketball program in accomplishments and prestige, but the fact is that UK football enjoyed pretty decent fan support up until this past year. I’ll put it this way – no matter how badly the football program may be overshadowed by the basketball program, I can guarantee you that Commonwealth would be packed if UK ever fielded a team that was ranked in the top ten. At Florida the apathy of the fans towards basketball is palpable – at UK we are actually having football conversations in December. Imagine that! 🙂
