The first official RPI ratings of the college basketball season were released today and Jeff Goodman used everything he learned from Mavis Beacon to be the first to post them online.  As noted by Goodman, the rankings appear a bit odd with Georgetown sporting three losses in the top spot and Duke (#7) and Ohio State (#19) not anywhere close to their rankings.  Here is the top-25:

1. Georgetown
2. Kansas
3. Syracuse
4. BYU
5. UConn
6. Kentucky
7. St. John’s
8. Duke
9. San Diego State
10. Pittsburgh
11. Purdue
12. West Virginia
13. Florida
14. Notre Dame
15. Vanderbilt
16. Central Florida
17. Temple
18. Villanova
19. Ohio State
20. Washington
21. UNLV
22. Old Dominion
23. Miami
24. Cleveland State
25. Boston College

In case you’re wondering, Tennessee comes in at #40 and Louisville finds themselves at #46.  Portland is #37.  Yes, Portland.

Does the NCAA handle this? It makes as much sense as the Cam Newton, Ohio State, Enes situation.

#5 our out of conf is up there but the SEC drags our sos way down sadly. Two losses also drop the rpi.

Ohio ST is 19 because they have not played anyone. At this time of the year its better to have an occassional “good loss” then piling up wins against nobodies

Has anyone noticed the post about Cal coaching the dominican team? Its pretty cool, like those sportsnation polls only this one never seems to change. How about who is the UK MVP to this point in the season? Jorts,Knight,Lamb,Liggins?

Do you think Pitino already has a PowerPoint presentation put together for the media so he can put on a real press conference about why his team is going to blow this year?

It’s like he drew the first ten out of a hat. The order makes no sense at all. I mean, i’d like for Duke to be ranked as low as possible, but even i wouldn’t put them that low.

Too early in the season for it to matter. We need to be midway thru conference games before this RPI thing even start to make ANY sense at all.

Why does it surprise you that I am #37 in the RPI? If you followed college basketball, you would know that I am in a good conference, and have had a Top 100 RPI each of the past few years. Being #37 isn’t that big of a reach to those who watch college basketball.

This would be useful, except for the fact that the RPI doesn’t have as much bearing on the NCAA tournament as other things, such as Sagarin ratings or the AP poll. People would be better off following those than the RPI. Or better yet, look at a combination of everything.
