Exhibitionists: The Northwood Seahawks

Finally! After 6 grueling months without basketball the Cats will finally take to the court on the 2012 National Champions campaign. Yes the last time our beloved Wildcats were on the floor a decade of futility was erased and  we retook our spot as the kings of college basketball. Tomorrow night we get to see an all new team walk out in Rupp to take on our first exhibition opponent. But who are the Northwood Seahawks? Here’s some insight on the Cat’s first opponent of the year.

What’s a Northwood?

Defining Northwood University can be a little bit tricky as they try to confuse opponents by having three different basketball teams. The “school-of-choice for business-minded students of all ages and backgrounds” features three different residential campuses with locations in Florida, Texas, and Michigan. The campus we are focused on is the one located in sunny palm beach Florida and despite having the non-threatening mascot of the Seahawk, Northwood could prove to be a formidable foe. Here’s why:

Last Year:

In 2011-2012 the Seahawks spent much of the season ranked as the top team in Division II-NAIA. The hawks of the sea compiled a regular season record of 30-3, which was good enough to capture the number one seed in the tournament. From there they steamrolled their opponents all the way to the championship game but a title was just not meant to be. Northwood fell to the Hustlin’Owls of #2-seed Oregon Tech in the lowest scoring championship game in NAIA division 2 history. Now the Seahawks have some unfinished business and enter the year again ranked as the top team. Will they be able to grab the trophy after coming up short last season? Who knows, but if they do it will be behind the strength of NAIA all tournament player Tyrone Davis.

Best Player: Tyrone Davis

Tyrone Davis returns to lead the Seahawks once again for a run at the title. Last night Northwood squared off against Michigan State in a game where the Spartans rolled 85-57. Davis really struggled as he went 0-6 from the field and finished with just three points from free throws. Last night the hawks were lead by Masse Doumbe. The crafty Frenchman earned a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. I doubt he will be able to do the same against Nerlens and WCS but we shall see.

Expect the Cats to roll with ease. Rejoice, basketball is finally here!!!

Always amazes me that a “Cats fan” has no idea where to find the schedule and the broadcast info. UKATHLETICS.COM people. Get to know it.

Expect us to roll with ease……..why??? Personally, I think Northwood will give UK a legitimate game because MSU is probably a lot better than we are right now.
