Evan Daniels says don’t worry about the 2012 recruiting class

Evan Daniels: the poster child for recruiting analysts

Despite bringing in what many are calling the number one recruiting class in the land, some Cat fans are still worried that Cal’s class won’t be as up to snuff as its predecessors. The loss of five superstar underclassmen, Anthony Bennett and Mark Lyons have some reaching for the panic button, which to me, is a sure as sign as any that in these glory days, we are spoiled rotten. But, have no fear, Evan Daniels told Larry Vaught the Cats are doing just fine, thanks in large part to the man with the fade, Nerlens Noel:

“Nerlens is definitely that guy they needed the most,” Daniels said. “They desperately needed his defensive presence. Willie is a great talent and will be a great player down the road, but Nerlens is ready to be that guy now. He will make an immediate major impact on the defensive end.

“Archie and Alex will take care of the scoring. That’s why (UCLA spring signee) Shabazz (Muhammad) was not as important as Noel. Nerlens can dominate without scoring a point and that translates nicely into the college game. He is the No. 1 player in the country and the most dominant defensive player in the country. He is getting better offensively, too. He has a nice touch and has the tools to be good.”

So, sit back, relax, and let Cal fill in the roster with some much-needed depth, whether it be Julius Mays or Amile Jefferson. He hasn’t let us down yet.

Question…. I keep seeing articles saying that we are adding just one more piece. Do we not have the scholarships to add more than one of these guys? Would love to see both front and backcourt help added.

3- We could add more guys but the class of 2013 is so loaded that Cal is really only looking for some short term depth for next season, hence going after these transfers with only a year of eligibility left. He doesn’t want to eat up a scholarship for multiple years on an “average” guy in this class when the talent in the 2013 class is so much better.

My guess is using all these one and done guys will cause this problem every few years. In order to prevent this the timing has to be perfect.

Draftexpress has Noel, Poythress, Goodwin, and Harrow listed as 2013 first round draft choices and people are quaking. College BB will be down next season, and this team has as good a chance as any barring injury. Maybe Hood can be a player like Marty Clark was at Duke. Cauley will be better than Vargas, and Beckham will be a pit bull type defender like Ramon Harris was. If UK gets Mays, he will be the sixth starter and fill the Darius Miller/Doran Lamb instant offense off the bench role. That will complete the team.

I think Evan maybe enjoying that pose alittle. On a different note Eric Crawford (CJ) on FB just posted something about Nerlins being investigated by via Thameltoe and the NCAA. If any UK fans are on Crawfords FB friendship ring this dude has got to be clipped a notch. along With his fellow band of “DRED bird” fans.

Also, I expect Wiltjer to hit the weight room this summer. He will ultimately be a Kyle Korver or Brian Evans(Indiana back in the 90s) type player who will average 16 ppg.

I think we need both but if we can only get one who do you all think we need more? I break it down like this, if we go Mays then now Poythress gets most the back up 4 minutes and Archie moves to the 3 while Mays plays the 2 and maybe runs point when Harrow goes out assumming he’s a better point than Twany, I don’t want to judge the kid’s game too much without seeing him run our offense first. Or if we go Jefferson then he and Wiltjer battle for starting and back up 4 minutes while Poythress gets a lot of back up SG mins and Archie runs the point when Harrow is out, once again depeding on Twany. It’s like comparing the fundamental flaws from Cal’s first two teams. Wall’s team needed another shooter, Knight’s team needed another big. I love the Mays kid, but give me Jefferson and I’ll take the chance that Hood steps up and becomes that shooter we need.

I love how the dorkiest dude in my math class now evaluates basketball prospects lol. How exactly does this happen? Or does he just let others rank these players and then just follow the lead? Has to be that.
