ESPN’s Coverage of UK’s Victory over Duke in 1998

I am a sucker for this kind of thing. Old television fascinates me, even when it isn’t that old. Here is the ESPN coverage of Kentucky’s 1998 victory over Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Notice how bland the entire production is…no music, no crazy graphics, no rock and roll. Just sports..and a great sporting event at that. Dan Patrick breaks down UK’s win and you see some great comments from Tubby, Coach K and Jeff Sheppard. A must watch:

I know they have to cut these clips down for TV, but it left out (1) the 17-point deficit UK had in the 2nd half (that was bigger than being down 16 in the first half – they alluded to it after, but should have shown a clip) and (2) how K used all his timeouts and how Tubby wouldn’t call one through the second half which gave UK a huge advantage and (3) they needed to show more Turner going by Wojo, that was some of the biggest plays.

But overall great memories. I don’t remember ever seeing that was I was at UK and I think we were out celebrating that night.

Too bad Cal can’t X and O like Tubby. If he could, we would have 8 titles right now. Cal’s teams the last 2 years had more talent than the 98 team. But Cal needs 8 or 9 NBA players to overcome his inept coaching.

I’m really a tard. You know that ghetto commuter school owned by Cal and UK. We tards havE not been relevant since 1986 when we cheated with prop 48 morons on our roster. But our coach does bag bimbos on restaurant tables and then pays to abort his baby. L yes that’s the TARD way!

Funny that Shepard mentioned Duke’s “class”. He almost got his head taken off with a classy forearm shiver.

This was probably the best coached game i’ve ever watched. When Duke ran out of timeouts and Tubby refused to call a timeout…amazing.

I was like 7 when this game took place, and I can remember my mom turning the game off when they were down 17. Convinced her to turn it back, and we were down 5 or 6. Helluva game.

I was actually at the game. I was pissed at the Cats until the final 10 minutes during the come back! That was the Greatess second half come back I have ever witnessed and one crazy day for all of the Cats fans in St. Petersburg that day! The game was actually played in Tropicana Field, current home of the Rays!
