ESPN Gives A ‘Progress Report’ On The Football Of The SEC

It’s far past time for our focus to shift towards football, but darnit if the basketball off season isn’t just as exciting as the regular season with Calipari.  Five star commitments around every turn.  Never the less, football season will be here soon enough, and there will be plenty of it before we get to March Madness.  While the Kentucky season still holds far too many question marks to accurately begin predicting how we will fare, ESPN has marked us as ‘headed in the right direction.’ So woo hoo for that!

Using a grading system of 1-5, they ranked each football program from ‘below average program with little success,’ to ‘consistent contender with potential to be BCS bowl contender.’  Kentucky fell right in the middle with a 3 (Recent mediocre results but seems to be building momentum,) but maybe a 3 is all we can really ask for at this point.  As long as we’re trending up, right?

Here’s how the rest of the SEC stacked up:

Alabama: 5

Arkansas: 4

Auburn: 4

Florida: 3

Georgia: 2

Kentucky: 3

LSU: 5

Mississippi State: 3

Ole Miss: 2

South Carolina: 3

Tennessee: 2

Vanderbilt: 1

Suck on that Tennessee.  You may have won 26 straight, but we’ve got a better grade than you according to ESPN.

This is the year.

Those rakings are ridiculous. Arkansas above both Florida and South Carolina? Horsehockey. Mallets gone, their defense still sucks and Bama, Auburn and LSU are going to kill them just on GP.

Show me any other football ranking anywhere that has UK ranked higher than UT and UGA, and even with UF, MS St, and USC. I’d say that’s an amazing feat for UK football right now.

number 1, oh yeah of little faith. Newton has much more upside than Hartline, maybe the loss of Cobb will result in not as good stats. But stats are for losers. If there are wide receivers and other potential playmakers we will be okay.

We will suck from here on out as long as the current coaching staff is here. Joker was not qualified enough to be a head coach. He flat out SUCKED as an OC. Don’t know why he was chosen.

More football news, please. Basketball sucks, except for March. And yes, I’m serious. I guess I should move to Alabama.
    Go football Cats!

    I disagree. I would have given Kentucky a 2 and Tennessee a 3.

#5 – I suppose you are qualified to evaluate head coaches?

These people do realize the same guys who composed last year’s Diarrhea Defense are still starters, right?

6-thats blasphemy. UK football is, was and always will be a way to pass time till roundball season. i like UK football but all they do is set fans up for disappointment. this is a basketball school. only when they decide to hire a real coach, they might be able to contend for an SEC title and we will always be overshadowed by the other NCAA power house schools to be considered for a BCS title game if we did go undefeated. I love going to the games but even in our best years we find some way to ruin it

I cannot believe the comments here that positively support football.Almost 50% of the responses are positive, and from this website!!

Check what the other teams and coaches have to say about this program. How about that UK Softball team?

Yes,it is possible to have success in football, and basketball.

We had 2 games in our hands and pissed them both away. I could see maybe losing one OT game, but to lose the second OT game in the exact same way is inexcusable.

A football coach at any other SEC school would have been fired for losing 2 games to a rival because of such boneheaded coaching.

At UK it’s not just accepted, it’s celebrated.

I never thought people who complained about Tubby were racist, but the people who are so negative on Joker do make me question their motives, as well as their sense of reality.

These are not rankings people this some ones idea if a program is headed in the right direction! We took the national champs to the final play of the game and if we could have fell on one of their 4 fumbles on that last drive we may have beat them! Joker has the program going in the right direction! He made one big mistake last year with that punt against UT! Turnovers cost us last year! We had 3 or more turnovers in all of our close losses! If not for the fumble between Hartline and Lock we were about to run UT out of the stadium! Give positive support or shut up!

I think as long as we keep trying to put things in place to boost the football program like upgrades & spending more we can continue to climb that ladder. Leave no aspect out! Go 4 it! #15 I second that emotion, and will add “We don’t give a damn about the whole state of Tennessee ….. cause we’re from KENTUCKY”!!!! I want more than anything for this to be the year! I will always want the football team to be as big as the basketball program!

I’ve been rooting for UK football for almost 40 years, but for anyone to say we are a better program than any team other than Vanderbilt, and that we are headed in the right direction, is just not being realistic or honest. Our SEC records since 2005 are 2-6, 4-4, 3-5, 2-6, 3-5, and 2-6, so we are no better (or worse) that we were six years ago. I’ll continue to watch the games and enjoy SEC football, but please stop trying to convince the fans we are in the top half of the SEC.

Kentucky is headed in the right direction. They will surprise lots of people this year. The more we support them the better they will get.

#10, It’s not blasphemy, it’s what fans at most schools think when comparing the two sports. There’s nothing like March Madness if UK is in it, but otherwise college bball is ‘meh’.

Now I think fans shouldn’t say “this sucks” or “that sucks” out of respect, but basketball has taken the lion’s share. Football is king nationally and needs to be given its due at UK (I just wish we had smart fans to realize that).

As far as your coaching comment, it will take more than good coaching, I’m afraid. It’s going to take financial investment–but before that, it’s going to take the UK fanbase to wise up and realize that more investment needs to be put into football. We’re talking a cultural shift in thinking.

Roundball at UK being “King” is nothing more than the result of playing a brunt of each year’s schedule against a traditionally weak basketball conference. Football playing at the mid-tier level is more of an accomplishment than our basketball program has ever done in conference play (based on difficulty). I like UK basketball, but let’s look realistically how we got here.
