Love you Barker but you aren’t “we.” You’re from here and a lifelong fan. Many of the new recruits aren’t. To get owned by a mediocre team is just the start. We have a string of 4 straight top 10 teams in a row and 5 total. We are going to get absolutely demolished at least 5 times this season. I guarantee some will decommit.

Seems like a professional offensive coordinator would
Have recognized that Smith is a much better qb
than Witlow. Offense was terrible, run plays on 3rd and 10,
field goals down 15 late in the 4th. There was not one
instance where this team looked like a different coached
team than Jokers. The defense was the worst part for me,
just horrendous.. Poor playing, poor coaching. Just

There was obviously lots not to like about last night. But the decision to kick the field goal when down 18 (not 15 as a previous poster said) was correct. Down 18 you need three scores and whiffing on a fourth-down attempt eliminates whatever small chance you had. Heck, if the PAT is not shanked there’s still a chance late, even as bad as they played.

…And Barker is a fool kid. Dome adult should grab him by the neck and tell him to shut up and wise up. If he is as good as he thinks he is, then he’d be wasting his talent in this program. He need a real coach at a real school to coach him up.

  9. Just sayin

Now UK coaches say they need some time to develop the freshman. Nice, except no one mentioned that until we lost to WKU, or got out played would be a better statement. You can’t have a freshman from Franklin County who no true football teams on the field. One pass thrown his way, dropped. Biggest play of the game, fumble. Next time recruit players in person, not by films. Huge numbers on a crummy team in high school in Kentucky mean nothing. Wake up Coaching staff.

And totally disagree that recruiting class will be okay. The air raid smelled, but what do you expect from true freshman.

The reason recruits will decommit if “fans” act like the sky is falling after one game. As the high school kid knows this is a 4 year process. Grow up and act like a fan.

I want the people on this board that are not UL fans disguised as UK fans to root for somone else. Everyone knew this was going to be a long season! We lost to a western team that returned a lot of players from last years bowl team. They actually had a ot of talented players like Antonio Andrews, Andrew Jackson, etc., along with one of the best offensive coaches in the game. That is a tough opponent for anyone to take on, especially a coach that is making his 1st ever sideline appearence as HC.

To most rational people this game was a coin flip to begin with. Our recruits have been prepared for this season, and Drew Barker knows the pulse of the Class. Packing Commonwealth and supporting this team will solidify this class for UK.

Did Max look more efficient in the air-raid? To me, he did yesterday, be you have to give this staff time to evaluate players in game time situations. The only true disapointment I felt was for the play of the O-line, for most of the other things like our thin and young secondary have been known. Remember that yhe staff has had to implement completely knew packages on both sides of the ball. Just be positive, for the future looks bright.

What really pisses me is the fact that I did not see any improvement from last year’s team. And some poor play calling too. Even if they lost I wanted them to be a better team overall after all the media hype. Stoops being a top defense coach, I at least expected the defense to play well. Our upcoming schedule is only going to make it worse in my opinion.

Just goes to show you what a total incompetent coach can do to a team. (remember mitch’s ‘coach in waiting’ idea? pfft i knew then this was going to be a downward spiral for UK football)

Also that’s another horrible decision by Mitch Barnhardt (almost as bad as Billy Gillespie)
Why is this guy considered a good AD? He’s single handedly nearly destroyed UK in the two major sports!! Remember, he didn’t want John Calipari. Only after MUCH coercion and advice from peers and being turned down embarrassingly by Izzo and Donovan did he reluctantly give Calipari a go. What a dope.

Anyone can put a horrible coach in a job. Hell any replacement after that would make you look good. Let’s get rid of this bum before he does more damage.

Oh well, I guess we’ll have to deal with losing to UofL for the next 5 or 6 seasons before we get back to SEC level. Thanks Mitch and Joker.

I think most of the fans and the recruits all knew this was going to be a process. It will take time to rebuild what joker and his staff brought down. With that said I still think Max Smith should be the starter and Witlow playing running back, They were 18 down when Smith came in the game He took them on 2 scoring drive and they out score Western 10 to 0 when he was playing.Witlow cant throw the ball but he can run.As for you so called fans the recruits get on here and read this and if I was an 18 year old kid and saw how fast the fans turned on the team I would decommit. So please shut your mouth.

Quit blaming the fans. The fact of the matter is that Kentucky football fans deserve better than the football program has given them for 5 to 6 decades. The fans have remained loyal. It is the right of the fans to complain after an embarrassment like last night. The team wasn’t prepared and quite a few looked out of shape. And if you are going to tout THE AIR RAID OFFENSE, you better start the QB that actually has proven he can accurately pass the ball. In GAMES.

This is a team recruited by a joke, played as a joke, and coached by a joke. You can take a joke out of the program but you can’t take the joke out of the players. This is a team that will be in transition for at least 3 years. There is no magic coaching move by anyone to make bad players better. WKU was better because they have been coached better, play better, and recruited better. How can UK not have recruited that running back is only because of a joke we had in place. Coach Stoops and staff are learning also and the learning curve for this program is steep. Unlike basketball we cannot get 100 guys at once to win fast.

First off, we are coming off a 2-10 season with a brand new coach, a lot of new and freshman players learning a new system. The players we already had may as well be new cause they are learning this new system. This wasn’t going to be an overnight fix and a lot of “fans” are treating it as such. We were facing a bowl team with one of the best coaches in the game today, and I never once understood why we were favored. The important thing is that the players kept fighting til the end and that is a 180 from last year. Keep supporting this team and this coaching staff cause they clearly are heading in the right direction, but it will take time and patience. Don’t be sore losers and take your ball and go home after one game BBN, we are better than that.

Joker spent 3 yrs coaching these guys–3 yrs teaching improper technique, 3 yrs of getting worse every year. Stoops and his staff have had one fall camp, and one spring camp, only had the freshmen for the fall. It’s a long process folks. Our corners arent good enough to play tight, but help, and experience, is on the way. WKU’s players played for a real coaching staff before Petrino, our kids did not. Stay behind these kids, it’s gonna be a long year, but fans turning away will only make it worse. Remember Stoops’ FSU defense his first year was ranked something like 108th, 4 yrs later it was the 2nd ranked defense in the nation. Give it time.

What scares the heck out of me is that great coaches usually show obvious improvement from the previous regime. Its usually evident from the first game that you have something special. Even with Mumme you could tell that you had a major upgrade the first game he coached. You are never going to have equal talent at Kentucky with the majority of the sec. Have to have a coach that can coach his players up and unfortunately they are very few out there. What makes it worse is WKU has one of those type coaches and we had to play him the first game. Time will tell. Know we were not getting there with joker, hopefully Stoops is the man.

    10:59 am September 1, 2013 Permalink

I am pretty disappointed with the fan reaction. We are playing with Joker recruits for the most part, and somehow we are supposed to automatically be better than last year? When Nick Saban arrived at Alabama in 07, his squad only went 6-6! If one of the greatest college coaches of our time cant talk a relatively talented Alabama squad and instantly make them winners, how do we expect Stoops, a man feeling out his first head coaching job, to do it? Everyone just calm down, let him get in the players HE wants, see how his talent plays in game, and go on from there.

As for the defense, same problems that i saw last year, just really REALLY poor play by the linebackers. You MUST stop the run. That set the tone for the rest of the game. If you look at that first drive, if our players had made the first tackle available in each of the first three plays, WKU probably would have gone 3 and out. Poor tackling gave WKU their rhythm, and once you give Petrino any sort of momentum, its usually game over, as seen from his time in Arkansas.

Which brings me to my next point. The D-Line, while I know most were disappointed with it, cannot be blamed for this game…at all. As was stated in another article on this site, Petrino did a great job of neutralizing any sort of pass rush early with quick 3 step drop passes. Essentially, Petrino decided he wanted our linebackers and secondary to beat them in the first drive. That is a difficult task in itself. However, things became worse when our backers failed to fill the gaps and make tackles on their run plays. From that point on, Petrino could essentially call any play he wanted, because as long as the linebackers were struggling, the D-line would have to pull back the pass rush in order to check the run first. We RARELY had Petrino’s squad in any sort of obvious passing down, and when we did, we usually generated a solid pass rush.

And to anyone who thought the D-line looked out of shape, try having a team run the ball down your throats all evening. Stopping the rushing game is MUCH more exhausting than pass rushing.

(This is all coming from a guy who has played O-line and D-line at the college level, albeit NAIA football)

PLEASE be patient with this team. I know the fans are restless after the Joke Era, but it will take time. Stoops still has a chance to make this team competent, but even if he doesnt, the man has some solid players in waiting. So lets all just relax, try to enjoy college football, and cheer for the Cats through this transition!

I love all the people that are making snap judgments about Stoops because of this game. It was their 1st game to evaluate his players in a game situation, and Stoops 1st game as HC. WKU went to a bowl last year and they returned the core of their talent.

The thing I do not like is that I read a bunch of post that are not just pointing negative aspects of the team and its performance, but are basically giving up on them. Everyone knew what this season was going to be. I amjust baffled by th blindness and shortsightedness of some of the fans on here.

The game and result were disappointing, though not unexpected. Anyone who thought we were going to beat WKU decisively is ignorant and all the fans who are jumping off the bandwagon after 1 loss are idiots. Rebuilding takes time and there’s always the chance that things get worse before they get better.

We got the best coach and staff for the job. Stoops and Brown have proven track records at performing at the highest levels on a national stage and they will here, as soon as they fill their ranks with recruits able to handle the task. It won’t be this year, though we should all expect improvement over the course of the season. Wins/losses have minimal meaning this year, as 4 would have been great and 2 not unlikely. Anything more was wishful thinking and there is nothing wrong with that unless you take that wishful thinking and transform it into expectation.

So to all of the Negative Nancies on here crying after one loss I categorize as: 1. began year with unrealistic expectations, 2. fairweather fans or 3. UL fans trying to stir the pot. So if you are a 1, then adjust your expectations. If you are a 2, see 1 or just go away for a few years and if you are a 3 then enjoy us why we are down because in another 2 seasons we will be well on our way to SEC relevance.

Unlike previous coaches, Stoops and Co. have proven the ability to recruit SEC caliber recruits, but the cupboard was bare when he arrived. So quit your whining and embrace the process. Recruiting is 50% fan support, so unless you want to sabotage the program get on board and show the country why we are the best fans in the country. It’s easy to back a winner, but we need everyone to help rebuild this program and that is not going to happen immediately.
