Doron Lamb is surprised Terrence Jones didn’t leave….and other quotes from today

Kentucky made a few players available to the media today for a brief session and Doron Lamb came away as the clear winner for best quotes for telling the media that he was surprised that Terrence Jones returned to Kentucky.  Lamb said that if he were projected to go in the lottery, he wouldn’t be around for another run at the Final Four.  Can’t say I blame him.  However, he said that DeAndre Liggins’ decision to leave for the NBA was pretty expected.  No word on how he would have handled it if he had a kid and a fiancee.

Darius Miller

On being invited to the USA Men’s Basketball University Team tryout …
“I’m honored to be invited to it again. It was a great experience last time. I’m going to try and do my best and make the team again.”

On the USA tryouts being late in the summer leaving him time to stay in Lexington and get to know the new guys …
“It’s definitely nice, we’re having a good time so far. Everyone is doing their part in working hard individually and trying to get better. I think it’s benefiting me to get stay here for this time.”

On Cal expecting him to be a team leader …
“I feel comfortable with it. I can’t wait to get the season started. I’m just going to do the best I can to get better over the summer.”

On his role with this team …
“I don’t think anyone really has a role yet. I have to do my part in leading the team and getting these guys ready for what they will go through.”

On where he will play on this team …
“We have good big guys and pretty good guards too. I don’t really know where I’ll be playing yet but we all have to do our job and get better this summer.”

On his relationship with the incoming freshman that have been committed for a while …
“They’ve been around for a while; I had already been able to talk to them before the season was over. We had a fun time and got to know them when they were here on their visits. They’re pretty good guys.”

Terrence Jones

On his decision to come back to UK rather than enter the NBA Draft …
“It was tough, just because I’m bad at making decisions. Having help from Coach Cal and my mom made it a lot easier. I told Coach Cal I wanted to come back to try to win a National Championship, get more mature and college was just a lot of fun. I wasn’t ready to leave.”

On last year’s Final Four fueling the fire to come back …
“It was a great experience, but I just felt like it was a disappointing way to lose.”

On how he plans to mature …
“Playing for Coach Cal, gaining the experience and learning everything he teaches for another year. Preparing for each game, not as a freshman but as a leader.”

On improving his inconsistency from last year …
“I plan to be more focused on the court and off the court to prepare myself. I think it will be a lot easier a second time around.”

On where he is now compared to this point last year …
“I’m older and wiser. I know what to expect rather than being a freshman just excited about college.”

On the speculation of next year’s NBA Draft featuring more big men than this year’s …
“I wasn’t worried about any other player in my decision. Mainly the only other players that I talk to are the ones on this team.”

Doron Lamb

On looking back and having second thoughts on the Final Four …
“I think about that every day. We were right there and fell short of the National Championship game by one point. This year I hope we win the whole thing.”

On playing with the new freshman …
“We played pick up one time. They’re good, all talented. Anthony Davis can dunk like crazy.”

On advice for incoming freshman …
“Take everything seriously, even the weight room. If we get in trouble we have to run so take everything seriously. We need the weight room to be in shape for the season.”

On his defensive role with DeAndre Liggins gone …
“I think it increases a little more but on this team everyone plays defense. Everyone has to lock down their man and hustle.”

On things he learned from a year of experience …
“You have to listen to coach (Calipari) and do what he says; if you listen you’ll have success like Brandon (Knight) and other past point guards.”

On his relationship with the new freshman since they have been committed for so long …
“I know them very well. I had been talking to them throughout the season last year. We have a good friendship; everyone is cool, hanging out with each other. Hopefully we have a good season.”

Eloy Vargas

On what his experience was like when he went to China …
“It was kind of weird sometimes, like the language, the food and the people because I don’t know the language. And all we had was rice and chicken for two weeks.”

On if his play in China gave him confidence heading into the season …
“It gave me a lot of confidence playing like I want to play. I know if I can play like that way over there, then I can play like that over here.”

On if he talked to Josh Harrellson about what he took away from that experience …
“I haven’t talked to Josh about, that but I did talk to Josh about my future and how to be successful. I don’t want to think anything different.”

#2 I remember reading some comments that were making fun of anyone predicting KY to the Sweet 16 or Final 4, and look what happened!

    * I may have been one laughing at the predictors, I’m not sure. I can’t remember stuff from last month, let alone last season *

This is why Jones gets a lot of points with UK fans. I know he stayed because Cal will make him better, but it sure is nice to see someone come back.
