Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Do We Want To Take A Shot At This?

name

So by now you’ve heard the news – the UK Legends game is still on, but we have to pretend like we don’t know who or why this random team is playing against the Dominican Republic.  We can pretty much scratch off the hope that the former players will get to wear Kentucky uniforms.  With no Coach Hall on the sidelines, the chances of an ‘inside the huddle with Drew Franklin’ have dropped significantly.  Also, is it safe to assume the NCAA wouldn’t have let the game be at Rupp if it was an on campus arena?  Just something to think about as they explore new arena choices.

But perhaps the silliest idea is the notion that the group of former Kentucky players can’t be called the UK Legends. I guess the idea is that they can’t be associated with the school – because heaven forbid a school see former players supporting their college in any way shape or form.  But despite the likelihood that everyone will refer to them as the UK Legends anyway, I think we should make it our goal to come up with NCAA Appropriate names.

Here’s a few off the top of my head, let’s hear your contributions in the comment section:

—The University of Spintucky Cildwats

— Big Brother (That’s a Louisville ‘little brother’ reference, not a 1984 one)

— UNC Legends (on the off chance we could get North Carolina in trouble for it)

— The Enes Kanter All-Stars

— The Seattle Supersonics (because why not?)

— An NCAA champ, NBA champ, gold medalist, number one draft pick, and five of their closest friends

I’m sure you’ve got better to offer than I do, so let’s hear it.

I get that the NCAA won’t let the team be called “UK Legends” or “University of Kentucky Legends.” However, all of the players have association with the State of Kentucky. While there is zero affiliation with the University, why can’t the team be called the Kentucky Legends… as an affiliation wit the State rather than the University?

    Call the team:

“THE CATS.” That’s different from KENTUCKY WILDCATS. “THE CATS” could be talking about bobcats or black cats or any other kind of cat. I hope the legends wear UK blue and have “CATS” written on their uni’s. I want it to be as close to a UK uniform as possible so we can shove it down the throats of the jokers at the ncaa.

Honestly, I thought UK Legends is a stupid name anyway. I mean really, a few of these guys played just two seasons ago. Legends implies guys that played a long time ago. Also, can you be a “UK Legend” if you only played one season? Not trying to rain on the parade but I don’t think so. I’ll consider Tayshaun a UK Legend (3s against UNC were legendary, as was his 41-point tourney game), but not for a about 20 more years.

We should keep the UK Legends name and claim that UK are just two random letters that a 3rd grade class chose to represent a random group of individuals that are playing in what is basically a pick up game in downtown Lexington. Good luck to the NCAA proving otherwise in court. And Cal should invite Mark Emmeret to be the coach.
I am really a fan of just doing what we originally planned and let the NCAA try and stop us. Whats the worst they can do? Vacate the results? Write us an angry letter? Throw a hissy fit on ESPN?

Why didn’t they just play the game at a neutral site location? That way it could have been on TV, had no “technical” ties to UK, and everyone would be all happy and merry.

About the name, you can’t call them the Lexington Legends for the plain fact that that’s already a team name. I agree that they should play off the state of Kentucky, like “The Bluegrass State’s Legendary Basketball Team”

67– So you are saying that Jodie Meeks’s 54 POINTS against UT is not legendary?
You’re saying Keith Bogans is not a legend? He could have singlehandedly beaten Marquette.

BUT most of all you are saying that THE John Wall, the player who pretty much by himself raised the program from the dust, who hit the game winner in his FIRST game, who created the John Wall dance, a legend by itself.
    Think about that…
