Did You Get Tickets to Big Blue Madness?

istock_000005307293xsmall
Little known fact: before becoming a millionaire, Mark Cuban had a career modeling iStock photos.

At least I’m not the only one up at this early, chilly hour. Most of you are probably frantically refreshing and praying to the evil Ticketmaster gods for a lower arena seat. Well, did you get it? According to the comments section, it appears tickets sold out in less than 5 minutes. If you were a camper, did you think the voucher process was fair? Share your thoughts in this thread as we get ready for LSU…

I was on ticketmaster at 6:58 and kept hitting the F5 key frantically until about 7:01 and they website locked in tickets for me. Took me another five minutes to purchase them as ticketmasters website was clearly feeling the effects of big blue nation. But I am going for the first time since back in 2002!

UK event staff did as horrible job with this years BBM, from the security being absolutely rude to campers, to the event staff themselves allowing 30+ people to a tent. by far this was the worst BBM campout i’ve been part of in the last 8 years

Three years straight I’ve gone to BBM and these are the best seats I’ve gotten (Cal’s first year I was about halfway up Section 13, last year I was in the third row of an upper arena section).

I have camped out for BBM tickets all but one season since they moved it to Rupp Arena. Last year I couldn’t make it, but I got on Ticketmaster and still got tickets in the second row of the Upper Level. This year, I pitched my tent at the corner of the blue courts across from Wildcat Lodge at 7:00am Wednesday morning, slept on the ground (or didn’t, thanks to the ceaseless hoop dreams of wannabe ballers) for three days — and just got tickets in the 10th row of the Upper Level. Way to go UK Athletics, this ticket distribution was so screwed up you’d think Joker Phillips was in charge! Epic, epic fail.

I understand that not everybody can camp out, but the people who do should be rewarded with the choice seats. Students and campers should have priority on lower arena tickets. This is a special, unique event; time for the University to treat it that way. For example, information about the voucher process including the time vouchers are given out is completely word-of-mouth. How hard would it be to print up some signs or papers?

  52. Jic414
    8:20 am October 1, 2011 Permalink

Not everyone can spend 3 days camping out for tickets. Camping out only guarantees that you WILL get tickets. Those of us who can’t camp out take a risk trying to get them on Ticketmaster but that’s the way it works. I was under the impression being first in line didn’t actually guarantee lower level tickets either and that it was random (lottery style) ticketing. I admit I could be wrong about this though. Either way, we need to stop whining. If you didn’t get tickets, try again next year.

  53. My Two Cents
    8:20 am October 1, 2011 Permalink

48 – Maybe, maybe not. I got notice about a week before the event. And come to think of it, I didn’t even get notice. I checked my credit card website and saw a refund. I log into TM and try to access the tickets and it showed the refund. I called into the customer service and they gave me the run around that it was due to the order placed at the same IP address. If they can pick up on that… I’m guessing they will pick up on the same account. Hopefully not! Best of luck. Go Big Blue!

I’ve developed a routine with Ticketmaster over the years: use an atomic clock to ensure the second countdown is accurate, use the fastest, non-firewall inhibited internet connection you can (I have a 10Mbps DSL connection), login to TM prior to 7am, and don’t hit refresh too early – wait until the 06:59:58/59 mark before hitting F5. Type the CAPCHA code as quickly as you can, and pray. I’ve always gotten tickets this way but this year got section 213, row 0. For kicks I tried a couple minutes later to see if tickets were still available and couldn’t get anything. Sorry to read about campers getting uppers – that blows! I think all campers should be lower arena seats, especially after last night’s sub-40 degree temps! GO BIG BLUE!

52- Regardless of your opinion on camping out (I admit it IS slightly ridiculous), if they keep on ignoring the “first come, first serve” rule that normally comes with waiting in line for THREE DAYS there won’t be a camp out… what’s the point? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect people who wait in line that long to be given priority over people who just got up and ordered online or people who got there the day before. Even if you’re the average money-idolizing American, you can understand that campers buy UK branded apparel and support the local businesses that pay taxes that support the University directly. That should at least count enough to move us up a few rows.

#68…I do understand the side that says that campers should get “first come, first serve” treatment and I do not really feel that camping out is ridiculous. I’m just saying that some of us have to go to work and it’s not that we don’t want to camp out but we can’t. We spend just as much if not more of our own money on tickets, memorabilia, apparel, etc. Camping out ensures getting a ticket but it shouldn’t ensure exactly where you get the ticket. I think people who took the time to camp out should just be grateful they had that time hanging out with friends, meeting players and the coaches and guaranteed that they would leave with ticket in hand. I am no less of a fan because I didn’t/couldn’t camp out.

Some of you are missing the entire point of waiting in a line. Why go through all the trouble of giving out numbered vouchers and having people line up in order if you’re just going to give them away randomly? Why not just skip the vouchers and give out tickets to whomever is in the area at 7:00? I love UK basketball, but there simply isn’t enough going on at the camp out to justify staying there for three days unless you are getting better seats, regardless of your work schedule. In the end, it’s a line that basketball players have to get through to get to practice.

These tickets weren’t free if you took vacation time to come out.

It’s fair for all folks… try MASS distribution of 27000 plus tickets in truly a matter of seconds and see how you fair as the organizer. If you camped, embrace the experience of camping and take the good that came from that, including what you might consider crappy tickets because there are many that would love to have those tickets(like the lady from North Carolina that just paid $400 for 2 tickets). We ALL bleed BLUE and a few tickets to a practice, one way or another, should NEVER change that. If so, you were never a TRUE BLUE fan to begin with. GO CATS….GO BIG BLUE!

We had to use the snow and bury it (thats why the grass is so green around Memorial). BBN is turning into a bunch of kitty-cats. We didn’t have no blacktop or rims to play hoops on…we used the ground, with snow, and a peach basket.

I drive down every year with my sons and seems I get screwed every year. They should give people numbers when they first get there if not, people that live close call all there friends on friday to come get in line. There was a 2 man tent that literally had 25 people in front of it! For those of us that actually camped all week and froze our ass’s off, this was really unfair.

My sons really look forward to meeting the players and getting there autographs for it is hard for us to get tickets and make it to games. This has to be the worst camp out for tickets I have been to. Cal was off doing his thing. They really don’t want the camping out to happen at all, but they know it’s going to happen. So why not give the campers some upper level seats. To the fat guy who was number 1 in line he’s a joke. He wasn’t 1 someone he was with was. When they let everyone start lining up at 7 Wednesday he was the last one across the road. They should have gave his fat butt last row upper level. Do you all really believe you deserve front row seats just for camping out? I went to school there, paid tuition, studied my ass off and I could never get tickets because everyone and their mom, who never even attended the university, lined up for the free tickets while I was in class. Sure, the students have a lottery, but there are only about 3,000 tickets available and 90% of them are in the upper deck. To make matters even worse, as a student it is nearly impossible to get lower arena seats to a basketball game of the school you ACTUALLY ATTEND. I realize UK is a completely different beast when it comes to basketball but, come on, you are complaining about getting a free ticket to go to a PRACTICE because it’s not lower arena?

Having said that the experience of meeting the players and having fun was alot of fun. Voucher process fair? NOOOOOOOO. I was in the 13th tent back in the first row on one side (out of 14 tents). Between tents 7-14, we had a total of 2+4*4+3(us)+5=26 people. Only two men tents were in front of us, the last person’s number in our first line was 81. Yes, you read that correctly, 55 people were in the first 6 tents, somehow a bit over ****9.1 averaged in these 6, at most, 2-man tents.**** Most of these people, if you hadn’t guessed, weren’t even there even part of the time. Many of those people were randomly there ONLY for the voucher presentation and ticket distribution. Perhaps a 4 man cap per tent? I mean, really, that was horse crap.

My condolences to the fans that waited in line and got uppers while some just got online and got lowers. Even if you can’t camp out, you should recognize that the campers should get better tickets than you. It’s frustrating but UK has had problems with ticket distribution for ages and no end in site. I remember getting frustrated when the eRUPPtion zone fans would get better seats than the Student Athletic Council kids even though the SAC kids were the hardcore fans. Campout went well. the security and staff did a very good job. However, they need to establish a rule of 4 people per tent in line. Two 4 man tents had 16 college kids saying they camped there. Needs to be clear rules and the security needs to enforce those rules. Also the one guy named after a major city in Texas had 20 people in his group in one small tent and he was first in line. How lame is that?

SHOULD campers get better tix? Probably. But they don’t, and it’s been that way for a while, so you people complaining about the system only have yourselves to blame. Last couple years I would show up at the voucher hand-out time (really, it’s the only thing that matters) which is clearly posted on ukathletics.com. I would go home. Show up at 6:55 Saturday morning, find our place in line, get our tickets. Even with great vouchers, I was still getting shitty tickets, and decided to stay home this year. I got better tickets on TM this year than I’ve gotten by using the vouchers last 2 years.

The same bitching will happen next year too, but it’s just because those people still will not have learned their lesson for how to handle the system. Use your heads, people.

My friends and I are lifelong UK fans and freshman students who have never been to BBM. I called the UK ticket office tuesday afternoon and asked them if there was a limit to the number of people for tent. He wasn’t sure and put me on hold to ask to someone higher up. Two minutes later he came back and said no there wasn’t. Lo and behold, there was. Luckily our neighbor was nice enough to let 3 people stand by his tent. Then we weren’t told we needed to take down our tent at 5am Saturday. First off, what is a big deal with having all the tents, which have been there since 7 am wednesday stay up for a few more hours on saturday? And secondly, if it is such a big deal that police are going to take away control cards if a tent isn’t taken down at 5am, then why not say that online? They give us about 10 facts and try to be as mysterious as possible about the whole process, which means so much to so many people. Our control card numbers were in the 800s and finally when we did get tickets, they were upper level. I feel we got royally screwed over and I’m incredibly pissed at the ticket office/athletic department which pains me so much because I love this school with all of my heart.

They know Friday at 2 how many tickets are being given away, then they should update it from there. Also, I’m no legal expert, so Idk if there’s a law prohibiting it, but why not wait til 8 to make them available on ticket master. I arrived Tuesday night at 6:30pm to sit across the road from the official campsite. I sat there all night and got no sleep, then pulled a hamstring RUNNING and hurdling across the street and gate. Then continued to spend my entire birthday in the rain and exhausted. Finally after 4 days of camping and seeing good friends I’ve met while camping, I got my voucher at Friday 2pm. Saturday morning got my AA section 31 seats and it was TOTALLY worth it.

I agree things were a lot less organized this year and the scalper campers shouldn’t be allowed to have 30 people to a tent but overall my group which was first in line, got the tickets I think we all deserved. Things to make next year better though… limit the amount of people oer tent and let us govern ourselves. We know who has been there the whole time and who set up a tent and then went home the other days or come friday morning and jumped in line with a friend. So they should listen to us and then act. Just my thoughts.

Overall, I’ve been doing this for 3 years now and I think it’s insane but each time I get my tickets, completely worth it!!!! Camping out is the best part of the whole experience!!!!

Well lets just say I got tickets and royally am pissed at the whole ordeal. I camped out from Tuesday at 9pm and had my autistic children and my wife with me from Thursday afternoon on. They have been wanting to go to bbm for several months. We had to deal with all types of weather ranging from heat, wind, rain, having to deal with the noise and light from the freaking generator right next door and we ended up with tickets in section 215. The way the whole thing is run is bs. If they are going to make the tickets totally random what is the reasoning behind making people run across the street and try to get a spot and then handing out the stupid control cards? My tent was right on the corner of Lexington and Avenue of Champions and was in the front yet we rec control card numbers 622-626. Me and my 3 kids endured the frost advisory with lows in the 30’s this morning to get tickets and this is the way the UK office shit on its fans. There are 10,000 lowers and some person who took a few minutes to wake up and got lucky on ticketmaster can get lowers but we end up in the nosebleeds. For those of you who were there we were the family where my son was wearing the wildcat outfit last night and we were sitting on the side of the arena on Lexington street all bundled up and trying to stay warm. There will def be a call made at this point because if nothing can be done after all that I am not sure if we will be able to go because my kids cannot sit that high. The whole thing has really put a bad taste in my mouth. Its not enough for me to quit being a fan but it may be enough for me to say screw it I will stay home next time and just watch it on tv. While camping I spent several hundred dollars down on campus for food, merchandise and stuff for my kids just to get this to happen.

BBM is ok,but the campout is always the best part. Not this year! It was so disorganized. My suggestion?-regulate the tent sizes, make better grids, give vouchers Weds. morning, etc. Last year was so much better, the cops came around before everyone crossed the road and calmed the crowd. I was much further up last year, and no one ran or panicked at 7 am. I hate that people stack their tents on voucher day, someone in my group invited everyone and their brother, and we had well over 10 people at our 6 person tent. I felt bad for the people behind us. Next year I’ll try for tickets online or just watch from home! Still, Go Cats!

My husband, daughter and I camped out since wed @ 7 am. I have to say it was my first and last time. The way some players (Jones,Lamb and Teague) acted towards the fans shocked us. We eventually got autographs but still couldn’t belive how they didn’t show any interest in coming and hanging out with the fans. We where there for them, NO ONE ELSE and for them to duck out was a little sad. I know that to pass out any food or t-shirts you have to let the event staff know ahead of time so here is a suggestion to insure that the fans who come out to camp just to see the playes and coaches get that chance, why not let security staff know to walk around and tell everyone if you want a autograph be at your tents at a certain time and the players and coaches will come around and sign and take pictures, that way there is no fighting and surrounding the players everytime we see them. Also somthing needs to be done about these people who come up @ 1:55 pm on fri and get infront of us who camped out for three days we where number’s 735,736,737 and still ended up with upper arena tix.I think that as soon as people who are camping are setting up there tents should be givin wrist bands with the number of people who are in the tent to make sure this doesn’t happen anymore. Its unfair and needs to be changed. We are the only collage i know that does this and who are crazy enough to and thats what sets us apart. We are die hard BIG BLUE fans and i feel we should be treated that way.

Well, after a long week, there was so many negatives but luckily things ended in a positive manner!!..A friend of mine, (who was screwed at the beginning of the week) ended up with a voucher in the 900-1000 area. and got very good tickets..Was assuming they would be upper, but they ended up with LOWERS, in the BB section..Those tickets speak for themselves! haha

Why would anyone camp out for something that is FREE. You had to spend some money camping out, correct? Food, Gas, Vacation time, etc….Which cost money! Why not stay at home and try to get some from Ticketmaster and IF you don’t then buy them from a scalper. Whats the difference? You still paid money!!! But you didn’t have to freeze or sleep on the ground. Jesus, people use your head sometimes. You guys remind me of people who are willing to drive an extra 20 mile to save a quarter on a loaf of bread. Last year I couldn’t get any from Ticketmaster so I bought them from a scalper (sec. 16 top row)for $45. each. So do you think it cost you less than $90. to camp out? I REALLY DOUBT IT! not to mention, I wouldn’t sleep on the floor next to my bed for 3 days for $90. let alone sleep outside on the ground in the cold for it….Unbelievable!

Camped out the last 3 years and received lower level every time. Even though I am successful at getting great seats I admit the system is severely flawed. I sat across the street from 9pm Tuesday night and beat almost everyone across the street at 7am. The problem? People are allowed however many people they want to stand outside their tent and the first arrive-rs are not rewarded appropriately. I think the staff should go back to handing out vouchers on Wednesday morning when campers sit up their tent. Common sense tells you that you cant fit 6 fat guys in a ozark trail 4 man tent. com on man, MAN!!

I really do feel for the folks that camped and got stuck with uppers, but the way this works is clear and has been for years. For camping you are promised a ticket, just not a location. How is this a bad thing? I didn’t camp was promised NOTHING by taking a chance on TM this morning. (I was fortunate to get lowers) There are tens of thousands of folks across BBN that didn’t get tickets at all today that would be thrilled with uppers and now will have to pay a fortune on Ebay or do without. Again, this was all clear from the start.

P.S. you shouldn’t be camping out to try and get great seats, the campers come out for the experience. Being around fellow crazy UK fans and hanging out with the players is the reason for the campout… not JUST to get good seats to the show. 😛 Keep that in mind next year when you decide to come and complain again.

The people crying are the same people that would have been selling those lower level tickets. Money trumps everything in HDTV land!!
