Did Duke break NCAA rules with late-night practice?

According to the Dan Patrick Show, Duke practiced from 1:30 a.m. – 4:45 a.m. this morning when they arrived in Durham after being routed by Miami, 90-63. According to NCAA rules, that is not allowed:

Article 17.1.6.6.3: Countable Athletically Related Activities Between Midnight and 5 a.m.

Countable athletically related activities shall not occur between midnight and 5 a.m. (Adopted: 1/16/10)

The only exceptions?

(a) During participation in a conference championship or an NCAA championship;

(b) Participation in any competition that begins before midnight and concludes after midnight; or

(c) Participation in a promotional practice activity (e.g., first practice of the season).

R’uh r’oh…

UPDATE: Andy Katz is reporting that Duke associate coach Chris Collins as well as two Duke officials said Duke did not practice from 1:30 to 4:45 a.m. What a bunch of Lennay Kekuas.

Big question will be if it was a team practice, or if they it just so happens that the players got together and “practiced” once they got home.

That’s it coach K! Enough of this! Because of you obviously ignoring the rules I have set forth, you must be punished. Butler, say goodbye to those back to back championship game runs. Do you think I like punishing you coach k!? Do you!?

Maybe the men’s team can start practicing with the women’s team?

Dang, we worry about UL and Duke more than we do our own stinky team….can we talk about what to do to get the tourney, instead of 2 other top 5 teams and there issues. I wish Coach Cal had some balls and would stop trying to be a rapper and have a tough practice with our kids, but nope, he is to much of BUDDY to do anything like a real coach. Slime, I wish we had Tubby

If this were UK, it’d be the top story for the WWL. I can’t imagine the punishment we’d get from it. But with it being Duke, sadly, it will be swept under the rug and forgotten about. Just once I’d like to hear Coach Cal call out some of these things that get overlooked. Things like this, the fake classes at UNC, other players getting to play after receiving improper amounts of money, or the guy from Duke that finally paid for all the jewelry he bought. But if he did, he’d be labeled as a crybaby by the rest of the country, to go along with the cheater tag he’s already gotten. Though neither of those are true.

  24. Common Sense
    1:36 pm January 24, 2013 Permalink

Considering the NCAA didn’t do anything about Lance Thomas buying $100,000 worth in jewelry…they probably won’t take any time to investigate this.

You let a coach Cal practice continue on until 12:02. Emmert will be in Lexington the next morning.

The REAL story for those who care… was that Cook, Curry, Plumlee and a few others refused to return to the dorms after they landed. They had the managers/trainers open up Cameron and they practiced VOLUNTARILY, without coaches, until roughly 4am. That is not a violation because players can practice as much as they want, as long as its not mandated and/or overseen by coaches. Austin Rivers was known for practicing until 5/6am after bad games.

#28, if a regular season #1 ranking gives you a woody, then by all means, Duke is your team. Or Louisville.

But remember where the big trophy currently resides.

Honestly, who cares? It’s hypocritical BS digging like this that makes fan bases and reporters look like bitches. Let them do what they do, it’s not like the NCAA has a foot to stand on when it comes to discipline. Nothing will come of this.

    #28 Re:Duke is a flop.

Maybe you have heard of a player rapidly descending to the floor after being merely brushed by an opposing player? In basketball parlance, this is called ‘flopping’.

Duke players have PhD’s in the science of flopping. When a distinguished contributor such as I makes a play on the word ‘flop’, please try and smile. It’s all in fun.

By the way, ‘distinguished contributor’ is also a joke.
