Dickie V says UK’s work isn’t done yet

Dick Vitale,  aka Matt’s BFF (y’all heard that shout out last night, right?), is very excited about our big win over Mizzou last night. BUT, he also wants us to pump our brakes a little bit as well. In his latest blog post, he agrees that last night was a must win game, and positions us well going forward, but doesn’t quite punch our ticket to the tournament either. Here’s a bit of what he had to say:

While this was a great win for the résumé, the VBDI (Vitale Bald Dome Index) tells me there is still a lot of basketball to be played. This victory does not lock up a bid to the Big Dance. I feel that key road games ahead against Arkansas and Georgia will be crucial. There is also an opportunity to get a huge W at home against Florida. Kentucky cannot afford to stumble in its next game against a Mississippi State team that was blown out at home by Vanderbilt over the weekend.

While I agree with his point that we absolutely cannot afford to drop easy W’s like the Mississippi State game, I also think he’s missing the larger point– Last night’s game showed that we have evolved as a team. While a win over Missouri obviously does wonders for our resume, the performance itself was what was such a big deal. It proved that we are a tournament team– on paper AND on the court.

Either way though, it’s a very complimentary article that is definitely worth a read. You can check it out here.

One win does not an evolution make. We need to string together a winning streak and at least a hard fought close loss before this team can claim to have evolved.

We are for sure going to lose at Ark. We have to beat UGA and Miss State. I don’t think a loss to Florida will hurt us. Pick up one win in the SEC tourney, we’re in.

Could we get an update on SEC Tourney seeding? I think now we’re tied with Alabama, but they have the head to head, I dont know how their schedule looks here at the end, but what are the likely seeding outcomes?

Yeah, no disrespect meant for Dicky V but I think most UK fans understand that already. We were just excited about such a good win that had “energy” on display –we needed to be happy for that. Celebrate we did and now we can focus on the next game.

4- no, by all means, disrespect him. Dukie V hates UK popcorn. Thinks he should be served Chilean Sea Bass and Caviar while in Rupp.

2- Yes, it is fun to speculate some with the standings but as you can see below…so many teams tied with same amount of losses, it’s still too early to really look at anything specific.

    Florida 12-2
    Alabama 10-4
    Kentucky 10-4
    Ole Miss 9-5
    Arkansas 8-6
    Missouri 8-6
    Tennessee 8-6
    Georgia 7-7
    LSU 7-7
    Texas A&M 6-8
    Vanderbilt 5-9
    Auburn 3-11
    South Carolina 3-11
    Mississippi State 2-12

    2) you are right on…key game for us now is @georgia…we will beat miss state easy…or we could lose to georgia and upset florida and get in…it takes a 2-2 record to get us there..but @arkansas could be ugly…what i do believe is that on a given night we can play with almost anyone…and don’t be shocked if we beat gators…home court and rupp rockin (plus their injuries)…could be a huge game
    3) if all plays out like it should we will be 3 or 4 seed in tourney..we want the 3 to be opposite florida til finals…key game will be miss @lsu at end of season…if lsu wins we should be 3 seed…that is if we go 2-2 over next 4 games

A win against Florida plus 1 more win, finishing 2-2, or losing to Florida and winning the other 3 games, going 3-1, will make UK NCAA eligible.

    1) what are u trying to say in your first sentence…the only team we could afford to have a close loss to is Florida…otherwise no we are passed that stage…we essentially have to win every game the rest of the season

Win vs Miss St + win 1 of two vs UGA/ARK on road + 1 SECT win = low NCAA tourney seed

Win vs Miss St + win 2 of two vs UGA/ARK on road + 1 or more SECT win = moderate NCAA tourney seed

Win vs Miss St + win 2 of two vs UGA/ARK on road + home win vs UF at home + 1 or more SECT win = very respectable NCAA tourney seed

Win out + win SECT (unlikely) = 5 seed or better (sorry haters)

Lose to Miss St = NIT regrdless of what happens the rest of season (unless win SECT)

I see Florida with a potential loss to us would give them 3 losses. Is there another “strong possibility” for them to lose a 4th SEC game?

16, very well put. Yes with a guarentee win many of us think this week against Miss St., that leaves work to do with a must win at either UGA or Arkansas. Arkansas doesn’t look too promising.

Why is Miss such a tourney lock….they don’t have any great wins, got blown out by ranked teams they played, are in middle of pack of a bad conference{2 games behind us} and just lost to us. They were an 8 seed{projected} and we were not in but why?

  23. Bleaker
    6:46 pm February 24, 2013 Permalink

We match up well with UArk. I think their win vs Fla was an absolute fluke. We historically struggle with UGA (not sure why but they generally have very athletic guards) and I am more concerned about them to be honest. I just really, really, really want to make the NCAAT in what ever form it comes. I’ll even take a play in spot or 16 seed. I cant stomach the thoughts of March Madness without the CATS.

I agree with Dickie V. We will beat Miss State. If Vandy dropped them by 50 points I am sure we can scratch out a win at home, but that win is not going to impress the selection committee. However, the remaining 3 games are critical. I think we need two out of the 3. That is Ark, GA & Fla, we need 2 out of those 3 to lock up a spot, and just maybe 1 out of 3 if the W is against Fla. If we stumble in those games, we will need to take the SEC tourney to get in.

UK competed to win , even though they missed 13 free throws. That is what we are proud of. I do not know why DickyV feels the need to tell UK fans who they should play(IU), or how they should feel after their team plays well in a game. At UK the goals are not just making the NCAA, so of course UK has to keep plays well to have a successful season.
DickyV you have millions of $$, so buy your owe dinner for a 9pm saturday game.
