Dick Vitale Stands Up For BBN

During an appearance on Dan LeBatard’s show yesterday, Dick Vitale gave a number of thoughts on the scandal at Miami. About nine minutes into the interview, he was also asked by LeBatard’s co-host if the thought John Calipari was cheating also. Vitale didn’t like that very much and ended up hanging up later in the interview.

Check it out.

I think Dick overreacted a bit.
    He is always excitable.

It is great to hear him take up for Cal
and I believe Ratface and Huckleberry Hound both run fairly clean programs.
However, he hung up because an idiot asked a question
that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US have asked ourselves at least once.

Do any of YOU believe that every coach in America has not cheated a
    bit at least once?

I am sure Cal has bent the rules. Just as K, Roy, Tubby, Self, and Donovan have.
Doesn’t mean they are dirty, it just means they have stepped outside the lines
at times. Just like regular people who are not coaches do from time to time.

cal is pretty much the hollywood hogan of college bball right now…love him or hate him the man is on top of the recruiting game and has been putting the best team on the court from a year to year basis since DRose

I also feel the UK nWo connection is a good one because of the strong feelings about our program…we are constantly vilified by the media and now it is time to embrace it

Vitale is pissed off because they wanted to deflect this Miami deal towards Cal. Two completely different situations and opposite ends of the spectrum as far as culpability is concerned. It’s unjust to even discuss both in the same radio segment.

We elevate the undeserving, or under-prepared, onto wobbly pedestals they can’t help but tip over. Even more often, we make Gods of those supremely talented in one thing. Then we act surprised, affronted, disheartened when those gifted but flawed one-trick marvels prove to be your average idiot at everything else.”

13- I’m pretty sure that was the point. Let he without sin cast the first stone or whatever that bible babble is.

This frickstick radio co-host was trying to pigeonhole Dick into saying Cal was a cheat with a generic, blanket statement and Dick knew it. HE saw through the bullshit for what it really was… Shame as it seems this guy’s antics would have worked wonders on you.

If the comment was that every coach has broken a rule at least once, then the answer would be yes. The NCAA rulebook is so convoluted that they need staff interpretations on what kind of bagel toppings teams can provide.

But to allege that everyone cheats, meaning knowingly violate a break rules to gain an advantage… you still probably have a very large group of coaches in this category, but not every coach.

Dickie V. is very excitable, but he is also great friends with Jim Valvano who was a notorious cheater.

#2, #10 – I’m no LeBatard apologist, but it wasn’t him asking the inflammatory questions, it was his co-host. Its great Vitale took up for Cal, but it’s not like he is seen as a wise, unbiased voice. It won’t sway anyone who already thinks Cal is on the wrong side of the law.

But it’s ironic that guys in Miami are trying to deflect negative attention towards a coach that, like Vitale pointed out, has never been convicted or even charged with anything by the NCAA.

  24. BobS
    2:08 pm August 19, 2011 Permalink

Another overreaction from Vitale. Sure the radio guys are douches, but Vitale did not hang up on them because of Cal, it was because they generalized about all coaches and said they have probably all cheated at some point. And they would be right. Albeit, most of the rules broken are likely very minor.

How can any UK fan sit here and complain that he’s a “tool for his friends” and he “overreacted”!!!

No! You know what he did? He took a stand! He took a stand against the bullshit that every radio or TV personality drums up just to get ratings or hits on their site and so on! The best defense against these guys are two things. The most obvious is to ignore them & not give them the listeners & readers that they want, ie The Real Jerry Tipton. The second are guys in the know, guys as highly proclaimed as Dickie V taking up for Cal!

I’ll admit I get tired of hearing about his adoring love for guys like Roy, Coach K, & Knight…….but if it takes that to have him defending our guy and telling people the truth! I’ll take it! How many other guys on “The Network” do we have defending Cal & not ready to throw him under the bus at the drop of a hat??? Still thinking…….there’s a good reason! It’s because no one, almost no one wants to take up for Cal! You know why? Because most viewers are as dumb as the on-air personalities that get hired in Bristol and they’ve heard the Cal lies and allegations so long that they just believe the talking heads like Colin Cowherd and Bobby Knight! It’s cool to hate on Cal & UK and it’s not easy liking or taking up for either one! I think it’s about time all of BBN starts commending Vitale for doing so!

The truth about Cal is this! I don’t know what all he has done in his past at other stops along the way but I know that two instances tha everyone wants to crucify him for are bullshit! At UMASS he was cleared of all wrong-doing and the NCAA went out of it’s way after the situation w/ Camby was ruled on, punishments were handed out, etc and said that there was no proof that Cal had any knowledge or any part of any wrongdoing. If you want verification look up Vitale’s interview on Tom Leach’s show a few months back. He pulled a newspaper article going into detail about the statements made after the situation was concluded. Everyone wants to blame him for bolting for the NBA b/f UMASS got punished………he got offered a ton of money to go to the NBA and leave a school that he probably could not take any further. Sounds like a art business decision to me!

As far as the Memphis-Derrick Rose ordeal goes, we all know what happened here. The NCAA dropped the ball, the NCAA Clearinghouse made Rose eligible and told Cal to play him!!! How was this Cal’s fault? If any of the two previously mentioned d-bags from Tobacco Road had done the same I guarandamntee you that they would have never been penalized! The NCAA has it out for Cal and here again it is made completely obvious! Again Cal was told he would not be punished b/c they knew they couldn’t make it stick and he left for a better job……..again not a hard decision! The BBQ may not be here but who’s gonna stay at Memphis & not come to UK?

I apologize for the ran but I’m tired of unintelligent media and unintelligent fans bashing Cal for the things he has done in the past? Cal has gotten a bad rap for the majority of his career and it’s getting sad! He resurrected this school & this BBN and put us back on a level of greatness that we deserve and he’s gonna hang #8 very soon! Rant over.

He is hated because he is so much better at it than everyone else.
I have always like Dickie V despite his obsession with Tobacco road programs

Furthermore, don’t ever make a guess as to what I may or may not be susceptible to.

You all do realize we don’t have the balls to give Miami the death penalty, right? The ACC would sue us over the tv and other contracts that would be voided because of ‘us.’ The penalty for Miami and Ohio State will pale in comparison to how hard UK got hit back in the Sutton era.

Do any of you remember when Randy Shannon (ex-Miami coach) was rumored to be joining the UK staff? Well, I did a little investigating and realized there was a STINK on him and his school. I ran away from Shannon. You notice who picked up one of those dirty Miami coaches… non-other than good ‘ole Charlie Strong. Mr. Clean Cut Strong, picked up that dirty recruiting coordinator. The state media should be all over Strong, Jurich, and Ramsey over this one. If I knew Mimai was about to get hit, UofL had to know. Or, did they, and they just didn’t care?

I don’t think Vitale over-reacted at all. Cal’s name has been thrown out there among the notorious cheaters because two of his players took upon themselves to break the rules. Call him the most unlucky bastard in coaching but don’t call him a cheater. He might tow the line of the ridiculous rules the NCAA has but any successful coach does. As long as he’s not doing the things Miami is doing which is paying players, etc then i have no problem with what he does. Vital is just as sick about hearing Cal’s name with cheating as we UK fans are. It gets old because these jackwagons continue to ignore the facts. If Cal was implicated by the NCAA in those violations then people could call him a cheater. But he never was. It’s like those that call Rupp a racist when they never even knew the man. They call him that because everyone before them has called him a racist so they take that as fact. It’s hack journalism and questioning. And these idiots should know by now that unless you’ve blatantly cheated like Miami has, Vitale is not going to throw a coach under the bus.

Two radio hosts with no integrity suggested that every coach has cheated, because they can’t imagine people having integrity.

Vitale got pissed off at the suggestion and eventually realized he was talking to people who didn’t deserve his time.

Cawood sure converted Dickie V. to a UK booster. Back during Sutton I think, DV had some bad words to say about UK. BBN was up in arms over it and when DV had to come to Rupp that season to do a game, there were boos and catcalls from our fans. He walked over to Cawood hoping that would help his acceptance and Cawood said (as I recall) Dick, could you move down the table a little farther away from me, some of those fans in the upper deck may not be good shots.

#34…quit trolling KSR, you suck. In reference to Cal, he is crucified by the liberal media b/c he ‘doesn’t fit their agenda’. What I mean is, he’s living the American dream, isn’t afraid to say so and is making money the old-fashioned way BY ACTUALLY EARNING IT (and doing a damn good job of it!) His name comes up whenever it’s conveinent for the liberal-biased media and unfortunately, the peception that he is a cheater has become a favorite talking point of theirs. There is no evidence that points to Cal cheating and he has NEVER been personally implicated. His (so-called accountability)comes directly in the form of “STRICT LIABILITY” according to the NCAA’s Compliance Committee meaning that as a head coach he should have 100% complete and total control AT ALL TIMES over his recruits, players and those around the program. Really, NCAA? How is that even humanly possible and is that a fair responsibility to impose on anyone? Coaches are there to coach, not to coddle and babysit players each and every second of the day. By the time players reach the college level, they are typically 18 yr old adults and should personally be held accountable for their actions. The media needs to get their facts straight, do their own homework and leave John Calipari alone. Kudos to Dickie V. for taking a stand….he has completely redeemed himself to BBN!!!

Irresponsible….or genius? Free advertising? And, was that truly Dickie V.? Sounded like an impersonator. But, what if it was not feaux real? Then, I’m still disturbed by D.V.s “no comment”. Folks, we don’t know; and I believe we should take comfort in the fact that ‘Coach’ Todd will remain on campus. I do not believe, so long as a board of “overseers”, for lack of a better word, the program is tainted – as the DJs implied. We have to also recall that DJ = disc jockey. Most folks I know in radio – who gave higher ED a try – are one and done.
