Derrick Locke has some things to say

To say the BBN was upset after last night’s loss is an understatement. From National Championship to NIT first round loss in one year is hard to swallow. And yes, many fans overreacted. (Trust me, we have the deleted comments to show for it.)

But former Kentucky football player Derrick Locke says the problem is bigger than that. He posted the comments above on his Facebook page this morning.

Yeah, thats a lack of support. Fans even travel for a football team that has never been in a major bowl game. It can honestly be argued that the football team got into some bowl games partly becasue of the fact that the BBN travels so well. You are welcome mr. locke

As much as I don’t like what Locke has to say, I feel like it is true sometimes. We are a very demanding group of fans. That demand creates one of the greatest fan bases in the country, however, it can be demanding on these kids who are really just college students. It’s almost like a parent who continually rides his kids and scars them in the end. I love BBN, but even some of these comments are proof of what Locke is saying. At the end of the day, these players are people too and we should keep our humanity, even when analyzing sports.

What all college fans forget sometimes (or most of the time) is that these are young men and women playing this sport. Sure they are talented but they deserve a kind of respect and grace. We want them to win but we also want them to enjoy their time in college and saying negative and hurtful things cannot possibly bring about any good. Harsh criticism is a deformation to community. I feel sorry for these guys because of the fans who unleashed their misplaced anger and hatred on them. We will “bounce back.”

#20, hit the nail on the head. BBN showed up in droves at a neutral arena in another state in order to support a basketball team that started the season ranked #3 and finished on the bubble. Only support the team when they’re winning? Really? What do you call those 20,000 fans in Nashville, Locke? Or what about the 50,000+ that showed up every Saturday to watch Mr. Locke’s group, a football team that couldn’t even come close to sniffing .500 in conference play? These athletes need to understand some perspective here. We pay good money for tickets, we travel to support them, and we do our job.

They get a free ride through school, free merchandise, access to celebrities, free room and board, and free medical care from some of the best in the country.

When these players refuse to perform (and we know they can perform, so its clear they’re simply choosing not to) we fans have a right to be upset.

This is not some garbage D2 school, this is the University of Kentucky. When you sign your LOI, you are expected to show heart, and play to the best of your ability while you attend school here.

We aren’t asking much, we’re only asking players to play to the best of their ability. so to derrick Locke, sorry bro, you’re wrong. If these kids cant hack it here, they need to go to another school an and let some other kid that wants to earn his scholarship come and play.

Spoiled underperforming athletes = disgruntled fan base. Easy math.

It’s a minor faction of our fan base that spews and rants that garners all the attention. Then the media turns around and latches onto their every comment as representing the majority of our fan base. I’ve got news… they don’t. Yes I’m disappointed that we didn’t perform as expected this year. And yes there were a lot of times I couldn’t figure this team out. But I’ll never go after them personally via social media (though someone tell me what’s social about it)or by any other means. I’ve been a fan for 50+ years. Any player that puts on the Kentucky jersey has my unconditional support. Always has and always will! It’s one thing to offer critical opinion in a well thought out manner. It’s another thing to start spouting off with the only thing you have constructing a thought is your brain stem.

Thats why social media is a joke! You get a few fans acting like fools(ALL FAN bases have these) and they are labeling our entire fan base off a few idiots. Locke seems like a smart guy, so he SHOULD know this! And for him to get on there and blast these few “so” called UK fans makes him just as bad as them. Two wrongs do not make a right. I get tired of people outside the fan base blasting the REAL UK fans for something that does not reflect them! So SHame on you Locke for buying into it, he of all people should know WE support our teams through thick and thin. We had 60,000 plus for football games when UK was going 2-10 in those seasons. Wake up Locke, i know you are alot more intelligent than that!

Out of the blue, Mr. Locke vents his frustrations at BBN. The same BBN that travels everywhere to supports its winning basketball and soon to be winning football teams. Yes, there are some idiots who post irrational comments which is why KSR needs to go back to log in for comments (get more hits when comment section reads like a Jerry Spring show I guess), but that is a small segment of the BBN. If Mr. Locke wants to turn in his BBN membership card, that is his choice. Enjoy the rest of your career and try to figure out what’s really bothering you.

I can’t say I blame him. The internet is the best and worst thing to happen to UK fans. We’re more connected with info, but it also allows the whack-jobs to have a very amplified voice with direct unaccountable (often anonymous) access to players and media to voice their ridiculousness.

Obviously a portion of our fanbase is delusional in thinking that they care more than players who are dedicating their lives to their game, the internet just causes us to wonder how big that portion is.

It’s a bit refreshing when someone speaks honestly seeing as a lot of people think they should just be politicians who always say the right things and that they owe you something. I’m sorry he feels that way. I was a big Derrick Locke fan and thought he played his heart out for UK. Those of you who made him feel otherwise need to get a life.

I didn’t see the comments on his FB page, so either he deleted, or the screen capture is false. Looks like he’s been rooting on UK bball all season on his official FB page. We had a far less talented team this year than was expected. We will still be pre-season #1 next year and have the number one class and be favored to win it all. We are the current national champs…if some morons in the BBN can’t handle a bad season, then so be it. I’m pretty content with where we have been and are heading, even if i’m disappointed in where we currently are (ie: home, sulking). Cal missed with Harrow and Poythress and Archie has the hustle of a champion, but the basketball IQ of a cheese danish. We found ourselves relying on Jared Polson to lead our team, and while i love that kids heart and hustle, he’s an offensive void and doesn’t have the D1 handle or speed required to make a deep run in the tourney. That being said, see you in the fall all you haters. We’re going to crush you. Badly. And we’ll have a chip on our shoulder. Be afraid.

This is the frustrating thing about my fandom. I eat, sleep, live, and breathe UK sports. I would never say anything to a current or former player. I would never not support the program. I have never sent an angry letter to Mitch Barnhart, Joker, Cal, Stoops, Capiluto, or anyone else. I spend literally thousands of dollars on tickets and merchandise, travel the country to see them play, and do it all with a smile on my face. And yet, becasue I am a UK fan, and there is maybe 1-5% of our fanbase that is either a) completely unreasonable and reactionary, b)trolls acting like UK fans, c) racist, or d) some combination of the above, I get painted with a broad brush as being in a “bad fanbase.” The VAST MAJORITY of our fanbase is excellent. A few fringe people make us look like fools. And players who have the benefit of the support, particularly in the form of DOLLARS for their scholarships, get to come out and perpetuate the stereotype? Derrick, the extreme majority of our fan base hasn’t done anything to you except support you and pay for your education. So how about a thank you, or failing that, not trolling the people who paid for your education.

Social media is an absolute shyte-kicker sometimes. There are a lot of good people in BBN that support the bball and football team 365, win or lose. Disappointed when we lose or have a bad season, for sure…but still support the teams and won’t boo players or call guys out (ie- call them names, be derogatory, be offensive, etc). But there are 10-15% that soften express themselves the loudest, which is much easier to now via social media (than ever before). That isn’t even factoring the trolls that can make a fanbase look like ingrates with relative ease. If anyone wants to, they can setup a fake facebook or twitter account in a matter of seconds…and make themselves look like the biggest UofL or IU fan by copying and pasting a couple pictures onto the avatar. Then just ‘follow’ the twitter and ‘friend’ the facebook account of that teams’ players, and your a feux fan of that team, able to sling hate and other BS under the guise of that teams’ support. Its sickening. Not sure why any college or pro player would want to have a public twitter or facebook account.

To say UK fans only support their team when those teams are winning is as dumb a statement as I have read in a long time. If that game had been played at Rupp last nite, we would’ve had 24,000 fans there to watch an NIT game that didn’t mean a damn. You really think any other college fan base could claim the same? And hey Derek Locke, I wouldn’t be foolish enough to judge all black people based on the actions of a few idiots; it would be nice if you could not judge our entire fan base for the actions of a few vocal morons. I supported Derek for 4 years while he played at UK and this is the thanks we get? This is part of the problem though, players these days think they are entitled to a sell out crowd every game whether they actually did anything to deserve that support or not. I am so sick of athletes thinking the fans owe them something; I work too hard to throw away my money on a team like the one Joker Phillips put on the field last year, and when our athletes work that hard on the field or the court, I’ll be there to support them win or lose, but not wanting to waste my time and money watching a team give a piss-poor effort does not make me a fair-weather fan.

For 2 straight years Locke tweeted about “getting his money”. Then come draft weekend he got nothing. Instead, his backup (Alphonso) has been with the Cardinals this whole time. So that’s all I need.

Yes the last three years have spoiled us. BUT….it is not just about winning. Yes I want the Cats to win but JUST COMPETE!! I can take some losses but I hate to see them just show up and really not give 110%!! Thats what I am looking for win or lose!

he could not be more accurate……..he was not talking about football specifically and the basketball support this year was pathetic. we are the most pathetic fan base i know of……..going to the games to tailgate and get drunk does not make you the best fans. There is nothing else to do in Lexington but attend those games minus the few overlapping weekends of horse racing. I live in Louisville now and have been embarrassed trying to defend all of our idiot fans all year. They do not owe the fans………they don’t need us to be successful. John wall was the number 1 pick regardless of where he went to school. The fans acting he way they do may begin to cost us recruits in the future

94)To say the basketball support this year was pathetic is just ridiculous; I was at the Missouri and Florida games and those crowds were some of the best I’ve ever seen (and heard) in Rupp, not to mention the thousands of UK fans who paid their hard earned money to go support the team in Nashville at the SEC tourney despite the fact that this team has really struggled. Furthermore, it is totally unfair to indict an entire fan base for the actions of a vocal minority. I know thousands of UK fans myself, many of them season ticket holders in football and/or basketball, and I would venture to say that few to none of them have ever done anything that would jeopardize UK’s chances at getting a recruit, and for those “fans” that are doing stuff like that, its an embarrassment but there is little one can do to stop a lunatic from being a lunatic. But there are lunatics in every fan base, UK just has more of them because we have more fans.

His post is 100% correct! UK fans are spoiled! What this program has done under Cal is fantastic! Just think where it was and were it is now! No, we won’t win a national champioship every year, that is impossible! Well UCLA did, yep and I bet if the NCAA was as tight then as it is now they might have been on probation during some of those championships, just saying. Don’t be a fair weather fan, be a real fan! Start counting down to the 2013/2014 season, it should be something to behold. Oh, by the way, I hope we get Poythress, Goodwin and Stein back, they can still become great players! H & W, you should go to other schools because you won’t get any playing time next year! Do you think Cal learned something this year, absolutely, and he will be even a better coach! Always stop and remind yourself that freshmen are kids and they will make mistakes. Get the Mr. Basketball kid from KY, he will have the UK heart, as a matter of fact make it an automatic scholarship to the KY Mr. Basketball every year. That will help keep the Kentucky Heart in UK basketball! Just Saying!

Locke is one of the biggest jokes of UK football. 4:20 speed my azz kid! 4:40 speed is avg in the NFL for skill positions that require speed son. However, you don’t have any power, size, and you are way way too injury prone that you wouldn’t last a month in league without breaking an ACL. Not an NFL running back let alone an SEC half back….WAKE UP! Now just your mouth FOO!
