Derek Willis visits UK

Trustworthy face

Matt tweeted out earlier today that class of 2013 recruit, Derek Willis, who attends Bullitt East High School in Mount Washington and recently decommitted from Mat Painter and Purdue was visiting with John Calipari. Willis is a four star recruit and is ranked as the 10th best power forward in ESPNU’s Super 60 ranking and the 42nd best player overall, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he is interested in UK. However, this is the same recruit whose father, Del Willis, said only a few days ago that he “didn’t really trust John Calipari or Rick Pitino” because they didn’t seem to care about the kids as much as their own agendas.

I don’t know if Del had a change of heart or if it was Derek’s decision to meet with Coach Cal, but it seems like a good opportunity to turn to this quote from Henry L. Stimson: “The only way to make a man trustworthy is to trust him”. Who is Henry L. Stimson? Doesn’t matter. What matters is, using quotes makes you seem smarter. If Del Willis wants to seem smarter, he’ll shut his mouth and do what’s best for his son. Since his son is a highly rated basketball recruit, what’s best for him is to play for John Calipari.

Willis has an advanced offensive skill set, can score off the dribble and has a reliable shot from up to 20 feet out. Also, he’s 6’9 and can play the small forward position in addition to his listed power forward. I think Coach Cal could make use of that.

If the kid ditches the Dad, I’m fine with him. With his Dad acting like a ass, this kid will transfer after his Freshman year no matter what school he attends. He’ll make Legion’s Mom look estranged in comparison.

kid looks good. great shot, nice handle- 6’9. If he can do it vs someone other than short white kids in Kentucky, then I am sold.

Does this 6’9 KY white kid remind you of any former commitment?

Would hate to get another 6’9″ white boy from the Louisville area…that Padgett kid sucked.

I like the Scott Padgett comparison. The kid looks promising. Needs to keep getting stronger, but would like to see this BE Charger in Big Blue.

Thought I was watching a rare hightlight video with ZERO dunks until the single dunk at the 1:30 min mark.

Sounds like his Dad needs to learn how to keep a muzzle on his mouth instead of saying everything he says or thinks…sure doesn’t help his son at all. Poor kid..not the only one who has a dummy for a father.

First off, #1 & #2, you have no idea what you are talking about! Just because Del said he didnt exactly trust Cal or Pitino doesnt mean he’s an ass. He just doesnt know them and is basing his opinion off things he hears in the media. Second, Derek is a player! The video aboe doesnt do him justice. He’s 6’9″ with a brilliant stroke, a great handle, and is a phenominal passer for a kid that young and that tall. I have watched Derek play many many times and we would be lucky to add him to the 2013 class with who ever else Cal recruits. For the record, Derek’s mom is of an Eskimo heritage from Alaska. He is only going to be a junior who will probably grow more and retain his guard like skills.

He doesn’t look very athletic, most D 1 wings would be able to take him off the dribble with ease. He’s a tall guy with average guard skills, cal could do better in this class.

I was on campus the other day so does that mean it was a unofficial visit, if Cal wants you and your daddy he will call you, other than that take your daddy somewhere else because we don’t need or want your daddy around here. Tell your pops to shut his trap or you might end up playing at Murray St.

Watched the kid play and I don’t think he is UK material. That being said he might do well in an offense that doesn’t require alot of taking a player 1 on 1 and beating someone off the dribble. The kid can shoot and is 6’9.. Downside he doesn’t have great speed, strength and doesn’t jump well.

This comment section hurts the (majority) UK fan’s reputation, way more than it helps. We dont even know the kid, and because his dad said he didnt trust Cal or Slick Rick, suddenly he’s a bad kid that cant play here? He’s on campus, therefore Cal is interested, Id say let him decide who is capable of playing here.

Some of you are either horrible at spotting talent and their strengths or are just completely clueless! First off #13 your wrong he is not native American. We know him and his family and his mom is full alaskin eskimo. #16, 17, 18, everyone could due without your dumb ass take on the situation. You have NO IDEA what your talking about! Derek is only going to be a junior and actually just turned 16 recently so he could be a sophomore. He has 2 more years to develop his already very good skill set. 6′-9″ with long arms, he can jump, has a great jump shot and he will gain weight. Like I said he’s only 16. Some of you just need to think before you type cause you make our fan base look like a bunch of ass holes!

#26) Where do you get the kid can jump good? Watching the video you can tell he doesn’t jump well (compared to guys Cal is recruiting) and he isn’t very fast. Yes he does have a good set of basketball skills. He can pass, shoot and does play the game well. Doesn’t seem like he would fit UK offense though. Cal offense calls for kids who is just more athletic and quicker than you and thats what he recruits. He would fit better in a Duke type offense in my opinion. I think after the kid puts some weight on he will make a decent college player. He might end up at UK but he will always have to compete against kids that are more athletic.
