Matt tweeted out earlier today that class of 2013 recruit, Derek Willis, who attends Bullitt East High School in Mount Washington and recently decommitted from Mat Painter and Purdue was visiting with John Calipari. Willis is a four star recruit and is ranked as the 10th best power forward in ESPNU’s Super 60 ranking and the 42nd best player overall, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he is interested in UK. However, this is the same recruit whose father, Del Willis, said only a few days ago that he “didn’t really trust John Calipari or Rick Pitino” because they didn’t seem to care about the kids as much as their own agendas.
I don’t know if Del had a change of heart or if it was Derek’s decision to meet with Coach Cal, but it seems like a good opportunity to turn to this quote from Henry L. Stimson: “The only way to make a man trustworthy is to trust him”. Who is Henry L. Stimson? Doesn’t matter. What matters is, using quotes makes you seem smarter. If Del Willis wants to seem smarter, he’ll shut his mouth and do what’s best for his son. Since his son is a highly rated basketball recruit, what’s best for him is to play for John Calipari.
Willis has an advanced offensive skill set, can score off the dribble and has a reliable shot from up to 20 feet out. Also, he’s 6’9 and can play the small forward position in addition to his listed power forward. I think Coach Cal could make use of that.
