After being kicked out of Bullitt East’s game against Lafayette tonight for arguing with officials, UK signee Derek Willis will have to sit out two games, including Saturday’s game against Hopkinsville at the Marshall County Hoop Fest.
Willis scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds before being ejected in the third quarter (Bullitt East went on to win the game, 74-57). Willis is currently one of the favorites for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball honor and told the Herald-Leader’s Mike Fields that he was fed up with refs not calling fouls, which led to his dismissal:
“It’s frustrating,” Willis said. “I’m getting tired of it. It’s been going on for two years, and I guess it’s not going to change. I just couldn’t take it anymore.”
Bullitt East coach Troy Barr called Willis’ actions “immature,” but said that understood his frustration, which had boiled over from the previous season: “I see a young man 17 years old that’s tired of getting beat up and pushed in the back.”
