Derek Willis ejected from game, will sit out on Saturday

After being kicked out of Bullitt East’s game against Lafayette tonight for arguing with officials, UK signee Derek Willis will have to sit out two games, including Saturday’s game against Hopkinsville at the Marshall County Hoop Fest.

Willis scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds before being ejected in the third quarter (Bullitt East went on to win the game, 74-57). Willis is currently one of the favorites for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball honor and told the Herald-Leader’s Mike Fields that he was fed up with refs not calling fouls, which led to his dismissal:

“It’s frustrating,” Willis said. “I’m getting tired of it. It’s been going on for two years, and I guess it’s not going to change. I just couldn’t take it anymore.”

Bullitt East coach Troy Barr called Willis’ actions “immature,” but said that understood his frustration, which had boiled over from the previous season: “I see a young man 17 years old that’s tired of getting beat up and pushed in the back.”

Not a fan of this kid. Met him a couple of times and he is very arrogant. Also not acceptable for a 6′ 9″ player to only be averaging in the teens when he is the only player on his team and playing against inferior competition who shouldn’t be able to guard him from 10 feet in.

You people who keep saying this kid “is in over his head” and “will get Hood minutes at UK” are absolute morons and have no idea what you’re talking about. This kid is the real deal and will be a big-time player at UK. He is a legit 6’9″ player who is quick, can handle the rock, can shoot well, and can play defense. He will play the 3 at UK and will be able to get minutes based on his quickness, length, skills, and shooting ability. This kid is going to be pretty darn good at UK. You people who say otherwise haven’t seen him play at his best or just don’t know how to evaluate talent.

I think part of the hate on this kid is mostly because he is white. Most of these people haven’t even seen him play. The kid will be a very productive player at UK. I laugh when people say he won’t play. He’s not your average big kid. He’s a big kid with a perimeter players game. He is a very good dribbler and he is pretty quick on his feet.

23 — You are ignorant. You have no idea what you are talking about. He plays in the city of Louisville — the sixth region with other Louisville schools. He has four or five inches on Jon Hood and will provide major length on the court with a guard’s skill set. If Kyle Wiltjer can get minutes, this kid will certainly get minutes. He will give UK outside shooting and will not be a liability on all other aspects of the game.

No doubt the kid needs to grow thicker skin. As a UK recruit – he’s going to be pushed, tested and tried every game. Every big man opponent he faces this year will be looking to make a name for himself against the future UK Wildcat. Hopefully he’ll learn from this.

As for him being the only good player on his Bullitt East team – obviously whoever thinks that has not seen that team play. They are loaded and would be a top 20 team in the state even without Willis.

I don’t know Willis – He might be a good kid. I know he’s had a job bagging groceries like typical teens and doesn’t seem to be overly spoiled – but again – when it comes to basketball – he needs to get used to being tested the rest of his senior year.

Every kid in Kentucky who has signed for the Cats gets tested – especially ones where there’s some question about how good he can actually be. I saw it happen to Sean Sutton. I saw it happen to Scott Padgett and I’m sure it’s happened to so many others.

22 – I have sinced that racial bias from folks on this site as well and hate the double standard. So many people are quick to jump on Duke’s “white players” and automatically label white kids as slow, unathletic, etc.

I think it’s the UK fan’s current mentality that we only go after the NBA lottery picks. Well, I for one would much rather have a guy like Jordan Hulls playing point guard for UK right now than the option we have – and it has nothing to do with race.

Good players come in all hues. For every Georgetown – there’s a Butler that’s just as good. For every St. John’s there’s a Northwestern. For every Memphis – there’s a Creighton.

Not all of those players will make millions in the NBA – it’s a different style of play – but you can be a great college player (aka Luke Harangody – Notre Dame) and be a bust in the NBA – but that doesn’t take away from your value during your four years in college.

I’d much rather have a Harangody for four years than a guy like Orten for one. How bout you?

    27. Top 20 in the state of Kentucky is nothing to brag about. When is the last time a kid from Kentucky lit it up in college? Chris Lofton? He plays against inferior competition most of the time. Also, did anyone ever think the reason he feels he is being fouled a lot is because he is skinny? Basketball is a physical game and if you aren’t going to hit the weight room and toughen up, then quit bitching.

Saw him play. He will surprise a ton of fans next year with his abilities. Not saying he’s a one and done player but given 2+ years and he will be drafted no doubt. Reason his recruiting ranking fell is because after choosing UK he decided not to participate in AAU. Go figure, I wouldn’t either if I signed with the best program in the country. Nothing left to prove to anyone.

30 – Kentucky’s lack of top talent is shear numbers. There’s a smaller pool of player in Kentucky than in states like Ohio, North Carolina, Va., Texas, Florida, etc.

Fundamentally – kids from Kentucky and Indiana typically have a better understanding of the game and more passion for the game. Of course we may not produce the numbers of Division 1 players – but there are kids in this state who can play.

Mack who went to Butler was a good player. George Fant down at Western is going to be a double-double kind of guy. Remy Abel up in Indiana will be a key player for them in his Junior and Senior seasons. Not every Division 1 player is going to be a superstar. Jared Polson has proven he’s capable of playing at this level and there are dozens more like him produced here every year.

Sometimes in life and in basketball games you have to take a stand when you know you’re right. It’s a classic if you stand up you sit two games , if you don’t stand up you keep getting fouled in the back. At the next level from what I hear he’s going to be a bad ass UK player. At the next level maybe if he gets fouled too hard and they can go back and review it. Zing, 3 for our next newest cat D Will. Go Cats this week, gonna be tough, especially Notre Dame, they are currently 37-1 in home games and includes a few #1’s in there. I’m Catholic. We all need to say a prayer before the game.

Ironically, this was opening night of the high school season. 1 game, 1 ejection. I hope this doesn’t become a pattern.
In his defense, he was “mauled” by the opponents during the Sweet 16 tournament last year, which caused him to not play well and not have flashy stats. The officials that worked this game in the Sweet 16 were questioned about the “let them play” approach that was taken in the game, as it became excessive.

Wow! Not sure where to begin here. I don’t understand why grown men think it is okay to bash a 17 year old kid publicly? Yes, he made a mistake last night…he will get over it….I hope you do too. To imply that he is the only player on the team is a disgrace to the rest of the players. We still won our game, to a top #20 team, without Derek in the second half (by double digits). Yes, last nights game was very physical and many of us thought the refs were letting it get out of hand. Derek has always had a target on his back. He needs to learn from his mistakes (which I’m sure he already has) and let the coaches handle the refs. Instead of calling someone arrogant, how about trying to get to know them first?! Derek is shy, but that does not make in arrogant. Derek as well as his family are GREAT people!
