As soon as DeAndre Liggins entered his name in the NBA Draft, he was drawing comparisons to the Grizzlies’ Tony Allen from every scout, analyst, and NBA GM. Even Coach Cal called DeAndre Liggins a “Tony Allen clone.” Now it’s time for DeAndre to prove he can play that Tony Allen-like role for the Orlando Magic and he’s getting help from none other than Tony Allen himself.
Tony Allen is mentoring DeAndre as he prepares for his NBA journey. The two have been text messaging for a while now and they hung out in Chicago before DeAndre flew south to Orlando. “We’re very close,” DeAndre told an Orlando Magic fan blog.
Allen is a guy who had some trouble off the court early in his career, and aside from punching OJ Mayo in the face on the team plane last season (Mayo deserved it), Allen has matured into a solid NBA role player with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive second team last year and his relationship with DeAndre could really help our man make it in the NBA.
