It was a long day and night yesterday as Georgia and Ole Miss pressed on into overtime, my crew had a hard time finding a cab (going out the right entrance would help) and we were fascinated by a showing of “Red Dawn.” But we are back for what should be a great day of basketball here in the Georgia Dome. Lots of people milling around outside and there are two distinct groups of fans here…..Blue and Orange. This scene is becoming a bit reminiscent of the days in the mid-90s, when Arkansas and Kentucky both brought huge contingents of fans to the SEC Tournament and everyone else just had a handful. It is looking like that today as virtually everyone is shaded in beautiful blue or awful pumpkin orange. A couple of notes to get us started….
— According to the Courier Journal, last night the coaches stayed and watched the entire game and then went back and watched the game tape AGAIN before producing the scouting report for tonight’s game. These guys are workers, there is no doubt about that.
— The Cats are very fortunate in my view to get to play Georgia, especially after the emotional (and long) game last night. Georgia only has nine players, and after going through such a long game, it should be UK’s plan to try and make the Dawgs tired by the end of the night. From a matchup perspective as well, Georgia is a better fit for the Kentucky roster as currently constituted.
— Got in the elevator today and saw that the elevator inspector was named “Gillespie”…..good sign.
— Some talk today about the Seniors receiving NBA jerseys as a gift from fans and having to self-report and turn them back in. Folks dont give the players gifts….EVER!
— After the game yesterday, Georgia was very confident, with a couple of players noticing that they match up much better with the Cats without Patrick Patterson. I wouldnt call the comments I heard disrespect, but I do think they are oozing with confidence….whether it is misplaced remains to be seen.
— Finally a small tidbit on Roderick Flemings, the JUCO kid from Texas that the Cats are currently pursuing. Jim Tirey has a good profile of him on TCP that gives the basics, but after talking to my friend who follows JUCO last night, here is what I was told. 6’6″ to 6’7″ guy, goes strong to the glass and can put up a lot of points….averages just over 20 in Junior College. Coaches really like his aggressiveness around the basket and his ability to finish in the lane….even though he is a bit thin (although not Perry Stevenson thin). Lots of schools looking at him, including Arkansas West Virginia and Texas, but his comments to Tirey suggest that UK is the leader. He claims an offer, although I have been told that the staff likes him a great deal but are hoping to better get a feel for where they stand with Scotty Hopson before pushing Flemings to accept. He is supposed to visit UK after the postseason run for UK, at which time the Hopson stuff may be a bit clearer. Likely an either/or situation with Scotty Hopson, with Verdell Jones a 3rd option behind those two.
Off to get the Vols game started….more at the half….
