It was a great day of basketball on Day 2 of the Tournament, making up for some of the more lackluster results from Day 1. We saw buzzer beaters, amazing performances, boneheaded manuevers and the occasional cute cheerleader….all in all, a perfect day. Here are ten things to take from Day 2 as we get ready for Round 2 to begin:
— Stephen Curry is really, really good. Dell’s kid finished with 40 points, 30 in the second half and looked at times like the best college player performing in a game today. Watch his game against Georgetown on Sunday to see him….it will be worth it.
— The SEC has struggled mightily in the opening round. Kentucky and Georgia looked decent in their losses to better teams and Arkansas played well in ending what was left of Indiana’s season. But Mississippi State was awful for most of their game before coming back at the end and winning, Tennessee confirmed my belief that either Butler or Louisville will put them out of their misery and Vanderbilt was just DREADFUL. 21 point loss to Siena….and you wonder why I never believe in Vandy.
— Tampa was the place to be. Western Kentucky, Siena, San Diego and Villanova all were double-digit seeds that upset top seeds. Wish my tickets were there and that Tim Brando and Mike Gminski were not assigned as the announcing pair.
— You gotta love the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. They showed a lot of grit after their huge lead was taken away and the game was sent to overtime. They made one of the all time dumbest decisions in basketball when they fouled with the game tied at the end of overtime, but they made up for it and the Rogers shot was one for the ages.
— That San Diego loss sure doesnt look quite so bad now does it?
— Indiana is a train wreck. This is a program that was all but dead when Mike Davis left it….Kelvin Sampson began to give Hoosier fans hope and they had a great team this year. But now the bottom has fallen out, they were dreadful to end the season and all the recruits are going elsewhere. IU basketball is done.
— UNC and UCLA looked damn good in their first round games.
— Lots of really fat players in games in this tournament. Texas Arlington, Boise State, Drake, etc all had a fat guy….this should be required for all teams.
— As nearly ALWAYS happens, the trendy upset picks lost. St. Josephs, St. Marys, South Alabama and Baylor all fell. The only real trendy upset pick that won was Siena….which should surprise no one, as Vandy was involved.
— Good for John Pelphrey. Enjoy the win….a beating is coming on Sunday.
— All my 16 Sweet 16 teams still left for me, including my long shots, Kansas State, Villanova and Western Kentucky. If they book it and UCLA wins the tourney, it might be time to take my bracket winnings and head for the World Series of Poker.
We will preview Round 2 in the morning and then check in with some JUCO big man news tomorrow afternoon…..Until then, enjoy Western’s big shot:
