David’s Friday News and Views

The Voice-Tribune newspaper out of Louisville ran a story on the recently erected placed David (inspired by Michaelangelo) statue in Downtown Louisville. The 30-foot statue stands in front of the popular 21c Museum Hotel on Main Street. The statue has caused quite a commotion among the residents and frequent downtown visitors. The 3,500 pound golden statue is nearly impossible to miss and has garnered reactions from many locals, some in favor and some not as amused by its presence. Many Louisvillians were asked to share their thoughts on the statue, including our very own Matt Jones, who went there. Yes. He went there.
“I bet ‘David’ wishes they had turned the air conditioning down while this was being chiseled.”
-Matt Jones, founder of KentuckySportsRadio.com and host of KSTV and KSR Radio Show
“He’s all man, baby. I’m surprised those Kardashian harlots haven’t bought the building across the street just to savor the view.”
-Terry Meiners, Clear Channel Radio and WHAS11’s “Great Day Live!”
And the quote I liked best: “It’s big, gold and shiny.”
-Letitia Quesenberry, fine artist in Louisville
And now on to the news of the day…
– The UK baseball team fell to Mississippi State 3-1 in the first of a three game series. The Cats will be under a lot of pressure to win the next 2 to take the series. The Bat Cats must win the final 2 games to still have a shot at the SEC title.
– Kentucky still waits on one final option for the recruiting class of 2012. Montrezl Harrell is the final target before Calipari and his staff close up shop on 2012. Up until today, Harrell was still waiting on his release from his Letter of Intent to Virginia Tech. The Hokies held out for what felt like an unnecessary amount of time before Harrell was finally granted the freedom to pursue his collegiate basketball career elsewhere. As we reported earlier tonight on the site, Harrell is considering a number of schools including Kentucky, Louisville, NC State, Florida and Alabama. Kentucky would seem to be a favorable destination for Harrell due to the playing time available specifically for his position.
– In 2013 recruiting news, Troy Williams expanded his list to six earlier tonight. Williams is now considering Louisville, Florida, South Carolina, Georgetown, Kentucky and North Carolina. According to ZagsBlog, Troy’s uncle Boo Williams says that “We’re looking at other options. We just want to make sure we get it right.”
– Williams commented specifically on Louisville saying, “Coach Rick Pitino is a really good coach. I get along with him well. They play uptempo and fast.” He said literally the exact same thing about South Carolina and new head coach Frank Martin. In general Williams told Adam Zagoria that “They’re all still equal.” If tonight’s news is any indication, Williams’ decision is not coming anytime soon.
– You know the offseason is in full swing when the blogging world starts releasing Top 10 list after Top 10 list. Today was that day. Nerlens Noel topped the list of ESPN’s Instant Impact Freshmen entering the 2012 season. In the praise for Noel, Myron Medcalf insinuated that if Noel’s offensive game can catch up to his defensive game, he could contend for national player of the year. Although predictions are just that, it never hurts to hear the praise to keep us warm at night until Big Blue Madness. In another interesting observation from the list, no school had more than 1 representative on the list of Instant Impact Freshmen. Though the list is simply the opinion of one man, it does lend to the theory that the overall level of talent in college basketball next season will be very spread out. The powerhouse teams/heavy favorites of years past seem to be off the table heading into next season.
– Speaking of the distribution of talent, if you hadn’t noticed already, UCLA leap frogged Kentucky for the #1 spot. Honestly, I will be intrigued to watch UCLA’s top rated class in action next year. Unfortunately I try to go to bed by 11 p.m.
– In news that surely surprises no one, Adam Zagoria reported that John Calipari, Rick Pitino and Coach K are the highest paid coaches in college basketball. Yawn.
– Future Kentucky football player Patrick Graffree tweeted the following picture of his new haircut (h/t @TJWalk214). Looks like someone felt a little inspired by a certain UK basketball player…

Saving grace? At least a female ksr writer posted this pic. Just sayin’
Ally, not sure if you meant it this way or not but… Actually ESPN has had UCLA (1) over UK (2) since Shabazz & Noel announced weeks ago and they revised it then. Today, the final rankings weren’t changed in that regard.
I saw Pats head tonight at graduation. Had to do a double take when I saw it on KSR when I just got home! It was great to see!
1, true.
Between the statue and 6 shot/3 dead today in Louisville, we are all reminded yet again on why not to go to that city.
Ha, funny Ally. I see what you did there.
4) Regarding the 2nd part of your commment, that is sad and terrible news seriously —however, since I live in Georgia just making sure “no Cincinnati basketball delegation was in Louisville” during this time…..right?
It was actually considered comical in that culture for someone to have a large penis – they considered a small one ideal. Strange but true…
The “shaving UK logos in our head” phenomenon is taking off…only a matter of time before Calipari is forced to do it
The UCLA number one recruiting class mention is old news and the worldwide leader is the only publication, to my knowledge, that has UCLA in the top spot compared to UK. Either way, if Harrell commits to the cats, we should be even more solidly #1 with our 2012 class. Can’t wait for the 2013 class. Just about everyone in the top 10 lists the cats and we are likely to pull in a fab 6 class that will be a force to be reckoned with for years.
Matt
you are such a sham and let your ambitions get beyond your Duke education…does anyone else not see the irony of this Middlesboro boy going to Duke then banking on and marketing our love for UK basketball? Yeah…they got perty buildings, all gothic and such….but you are like Stahl on Sons of Anarchy….you sell..you sell….you sell…to get yourself ahead….
suck my dick buddy…maybe you should take speech lessons? The ties are subject in your heart, but your announcement is nothing but laughter to the outside that sees you as a sell out to the rest of the…
you suck bitch
noel picked after shabazz and we were #1, ucla passed us on espn when they got tony parker … and, yeah, that was a while ago
Derrick Willis fell to 91 in the rankings. He will be lucky to stick in the top 150 when its all said and done. The kid is not a high D1 player. He will never sign with us.
espn ranks ucla #1 but rivals and scout has UK #1. i like 2 out of 3.
I love seeing little penises in the morning!
David is a great piece of work. BUT it’s 2012 and he needs to be either manscaped or had a Yuko Systems done (Japanese pubic hair straightening).
Not sure I understand how ucla ranks higher by ESPN – if you look at the grade ESPN gave each player, our average is still higher than ucla’s- not much, but still higher. No, I’m not going to pay to read the article, but if someone who does could share some light on their justification, that’d be great.
Ladies, you just have to understand, it’s cold out here.
UL and Pitino run a uptempo offense? How many games did they have that they did not score 60 pts?
It looks like raw broccoli….
Man I miss MKG here is a great behind the seens of him working out to prepare for the NBA http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/sam_amick/05/16/draft.prospects/index.html
Shannon the Dude said this statue of David was “At least 100 feet tall.”
Matt replied, “Nah, 50 to 75 feet tall.”
hahahaha. Maths are hard.
Mercy 10, did someone teabag your White Castles last night and you found a bag hair in your fries?
This money would have been better spent by arming the law-abiding public of Louisville with assault rifles.
Sounds like you folks need some protection up there these days. Sounds like a great place to raise a family, too.
David? I thought that was a statue of Rick Pitino advertising his new hangout.
That statue is actually pretty cool. I rounded the corner and wasn’t expecting it the other day.
I’m a grower not a shower Matt Jones.
UL plays uptempo and fast? Did he watch them last year? They won purely on defense. Couldn’t score at all.
Good correction, Ally.lol
And Carl, hangout, I see what you did there.
That guy is small??? /snark
The “David” replica in St. Augustine, FL has a tall hedge around it to preserve his modesty. Maybe they need to look into that in Louisville.
Man, some y’all act like you never seen one before. Get over it already!
10 – u mad?
I always like those statues because they make most guys look good. I mean, if a 30-footer that’s hung like a nat is the standard, girls will be pleasantly surprised when they get a glimpse of most regular sized guys. Thanks big…er, little Dave!

I work on High St and there are funerals that go by my office every day or so and it seems everyone stops for funeral processions.
Sorry in Lexington
I heard Ryan took his dog to the sheep dog trials to see if they can train it to attack homeless people.
bluefan…totally unintentional but I’ll take credit for it anyway 🙂
If the town of Lexington were to erect a statue, it would probably be of dude getting tea bagged. Just sayin….
