David Williams Out of Senate Right after UK Football Wins Him Over

If you have followed the site this summer, you know that the issue of UK football funding for renovation projects has been one that we have looked into extensively. After years of having UK football project requests stymied in the Kentucky Senate, this summer saw a breakthrough, as Senate President David Williams said that if a dedicated revenue project was requested separately, he would approve the request to allow for bonding. This represented a potential major change in the UK football process and created some excitement around a potential $100 million renovation. But today comes news from WHAS that Governor Steve Beshear will appoint David Williams to a vacant judgeship and that Williams will accept it, removing himself from the Senate. It will mark a tremendous change in career path for the Senate President and one time Governor candidate, and once again puts the issue of UK football funding in flux.

As of this moment, the issue of Commonwealth Stadium Renovation funding sits with the University President and Board of Trustees. The folks in UK Athletics once again want funding for Commonwealth Stadium and a new baseball stadium and it is up to the University to put together a request, hopefully separate from other University requests, to send to the Legislature. Williams had committed to such a request, however his departure does not necessarily end hope. He was often seen as the biggest opponent of such funding and one could assume that with him gone (and his previous support before his departure), a much more favorable result could be found in Frankfort. The new Senate Majority leader will likely be Robert Stivers from Clay County, and one assumes a good Manchester native will join Greg Stumbo in the house and the Governor to support such a measure. But FIRST, it must be approved by President Capilouto and the Board of Trustees, potentially the biggest hurdle still remaining. We will know the status of that by the end of the year.

So things may have not changed a great deal, but it is classic UK football bad luck that right after Williams commits to renovation, he leaves. Still the future of Commonwealth Stadium renovation looks brighter than it has ever previously.

So The Governor gives his main Republican opposition a higher paying job so he can no longer get in his way. Pretty much par for the course. It should be a crime to allow a Governor to act this way. What a fn joke. One crook pays another crook to get out of the way. What a country!

What’s sad is that Williams is one of the most crooked politicians in Kentucky state history and he made you his pawn by offering money to UK football. And just because of that you ignore that he’s terrible. That’s pretty much why you’re terrible.

If the university does not take steps to make the football facilities competitive, they do not deserve the fans financial support… period. Its up to ****MITCH**** to sell his program and make this happen. If he doesn’t get it done, he will failed in getting the university to support his programs most important financial asset. At that point, you only have to look at the job the guy at UL has done to see what a successful AD actually accomplishes.

YES!!! I couldn’t be more happy. He will no longer be in the way of moving forward in the Horse Racing industry. SLOTS!!! HIGHER PURSES!!! This will save the Kentucky Horse Racing industry. Good Riddance. Football is what is moving society these days. The administration has to do there job to present the plan to the next guy in line in order to move forward. Not just say o well he will approve of it if…if…if… we present something.

Interesting turn and I am impressed that Williams took the appointment, excited to get him out of the senate but sad to see where your conversation with him on the radio would have gone, during next legislative session, if President Capilouto and UK approaches KY house/senate. Oh well.

#1 & #2 you all are exactly right. There are alot of things wrong with this appointment and David Williams as a person, but since David Williams just divorced his wife for sleeping with a magistrate from Russell County I say we call it even.

I find it a little funny how so many people act like Barnhart can snap his fingers and all this money will fall out of the sky. Incase some missed it UK just went to the state and asked for money to build new dorms because the current ones, frankly are not safe for the students. If you where watching the legislative session you would know DR. capilouto just begged for money so he wouldn’t have to layoff as many teachers. I love sports just like everyone else but we need to be real as well. most of the private donations to the school come from the coal industry which is down right now. How much can we ask of Joe Craft, L.D. Gorman, and Elmer Whitcker. The have given very graciously to a school that allows the professors to protest the very industry that has been feeding them.
Before some get on here and say money has come from other places then coal please check your fact before you make yourself look stupid. Our state is broke and where is the money going to come from. I like UK football as much as anyone but their are people going to bed hungry and losing their homes. Unemployment is way out of control we need to think about what’s the top priority Jobs or a recruiting room!

#4 the fans financial support really? Do you know how much it cost to outfit each football player? Do you have any idea how much is invested in each player in recruiting cost the scholarships ect.? Do you understand how title 9 works and the money that HAS to be spent on other sports to offset the money spent on football? Thre is Federal laws in place that predetermines what % of money HAS to be spent on other sports. You act like all Mitch has to do is just get on the phone and get a check cut! It’s not that simple. Our Football program is what it is. The thing is getting a coach who can win with what we got. Brooks did and he was 70 year old who had been away from coaching for years. Tired of all the excuses we have enuff to compete in the SEC. The problem now is Joker not the lack of a damn recruiting room, Mtch has done the best he can do with the budget he was given.

Williams was almost as big of a joke as Bunning. Now Kentucky may be the progressive state in the union that the two biggest leaches have left. If UK will present what they want they will get their support.

Folks, this is where the problem is, not Mitch Barnhart. You will fully understand this when Capilouto and the BOT turn down this renovation effort. Mark my words, they WILL turn this down. Instead of blaming Barnhart and the KY Senate, put the blame squarely where it belongs.

I refuse to give ANY money to this university directly in any form and will hold this position until there is some commitment from the BOT towards the football program.

Duke, you are a prime example of whats wrong with UK football, jobless rate in ky has nothing to do with KY football, actually the money that football brings in to local business is enough to warrant support. Ky loves cashing the check the get from SEC for football, the problem they dont want to spend any of it on football. Barnhart is worst AD in my lifetime dealing with frankfort, Until we have a AD that deal with polticans(like Jurich) all you are going do is get further and further behind. They can spend 22 mill on track and softball but they can spend a couple of mill on a recuriting room. Please , What good coach would want to work for Mitch, knowing that you will get barely enough support from AD to keep it at the bottom of the SEC level. Duke, hope you enjoyed the western game, more of that to come with Mitch at the helm.

This is tremendously good news. Williams is a maniacal ignoramous who has single-handedly prevented measures that will assist a badly beaten-down horse industry in the Commonwealth.

I realize this is a sports website, but a lot of UK employees are also fans. The call for stadium renovations rings a bit hollow when the threat of lay-offs, budget cuts, and tuition increases continue to loom over the university. UK is not just a football and basketball team…there are a lot of other things that happen here and the issues are not entirely separate. Additional money for athletics inevitably takes away from the academic side. You’re just robbing Peter to pay Paul. I’m not saying that the football stadium probably doesn’t need renovations, but rather that perhaps now is not the time. Remember, when people ask Capilouto to beg the state for football money, to university employees it sounds like they’re saying that a winning football team is more important than their jobs and the welfare of their families.

#18 and #23 has it exactly right. Mitch Barnhart is not the problem…the problem lies with the President and the BOT. In a sense I feel sorry for Dr. Capilouto for the reason #23 just mentioned. The faculty morale at UK right now is probably near an all time low. There was an article just yesterday in the Herald-Leader about the a tense meeting between Capilouto and the faculty. Many of them are upset about the infrastructure investments he wants to make, arguing (wrongfully in my opinion) that it is at the expense of faculty positions and raises.

The cosmetics of this given whats going on at UK don’t look good, a new president on a short leash trying to build trust with the faculty…I just don’t see it. Its a tough spot to be in. I think we might get a some of that estimated $100MM but not the whole thing.

No #20 people like you are the problem because your to uneducated to see how them money HAS to be spent. You don’t think the unemployment rate effects the football program. Let me break this down for you. Public institution gets money from the state you following. Aid state is not get the tax revenue because less money is being paid in to the state. Said institution asks state for money to spend on football. State does not have money to give. Can you get that or do I need my 5 year old to explain it.
You keep blowing about the sec checks. UKAA is self funded and has to support the whole ad. Do you think a kid on a none revenue sport doesn’t deserve as much as a football player. Get a clue nknow what your talking about before you make a ass out of yourself agian.

26 & 23–Football Season Ticket Holders will be repaying all of the bonding for the football stadium. The reason Capilouto can’t get academic bonding is, he can’t guarantee academic bonding can pay for itself. It’s too big a risk that the State will have to bail UK out in the long run. That isn’t a problem for football bonding. It’s absolute b.s. to act like football bonding is stealing money from academic bonding, the State would never be crazy enough to give you that money anyway.
