David Cutcliffe’s Monday News and Views

All weekend long, one name kept getting repeated to me in my conversations around the UK football program, David Cutcliffe. Now this may surprise you, but Cutcliffe is not exactly the sexiest name in the world, and until three weeks ago, I hadn’t thought about him in approximately five years. But now, he is a regular topic in UK football circles? Why? Because Cutcliffe’s name and the program he commands are worthy of discussion. The first part of this, you have heard me say before. I have been told by two sources close to Mitch Barnhart that he is a very big fan of Cutcliffe and if Kentucky ends up looking for a coach, he will be one of the main people considered. You may remember Cutcliffe’s resume. He was offensive coordinator at Tennessee and coached Peyton Manning and Tee Martin (and was also there while Mitch was there). He then went and became head coach of Ole Miss, where he coached Eli Manning and took the team to a Cotton Bowl victory. He then was fired, went back to Tennessee and now is the head coach at Duke, where he has the team off to a 5-1 start that represents the best in 20 years at the school. He is a coach that has been shown to mold successful young Quarterbacks with big arms (can you say Patrick Towles) and knows the SEC. He is also apparently a wonderful person and is someone Mitch knows and trusts. That is why you can be sure, that if a coaching vacancy comes, David Cutcliffe will be a target.

Now I have made my feelings about Cutcliffe known on radio. I am sure he is a solid coach and a fine guy, but I think UK needs new, young, fresh blood to command a program that has zero energy behind it at this point. But that is a discussion for a different day. The other reason that Cutcliffe has been spoken about a great deal is that he commands a Duke football program that may have taken a step over Kentucky. Yes, read that sentence again. Duke football is the laughingstock of the BCS. Without question, since Steve Spurrier left 25 years ago, Duke has been the worst program in the six major conferences. And for the most part, they have cared little about the sport. But not any more. They have just begun a $75 million football facility renovation and have made it their goal to compete in the ACC. While they havent beaten anyone great, neither have they lost to a Sun Belt team this year, and this season looks to be the first step to respectability. As one person around UK Athletics said to me Saturday, “if they can do it at Duke of all places, we have no excuses here.” Yes, the ACC is much worse than the SEC. Yes, this is a one year bump from Duke and they could crash back to landing quickly. And yes, saying anything good about Duke makes all of our skin crawl. But we always used to say that no matter how bad UK football became, we were better than Duke. But that now may have changed. And comparing our football program to the Blue Devils and the coach that will be on many people’s lips in a few weeks, is now a very sobering reality.

To the news:

— The big news of the week was of course the Harrison Twins commitment, and the first steps towards a 2013 class that might never be topped. The Twins are already getting ready, recruiting the other members of the class and trying to convince them to come and make history. James Young will be visiting Big Blue Madness this weekend and could be the next to join. He fits in naturally with the Twins and they have apparently spoken in recent days. It would be a surprise if he ended up anywhere else. Julius Randle visited Florida this weekend and it was a good weekend for his trip. The atmosphere in the Swamp was rocking and he sent out many pictures of Florida facilities (although oddly, mostly of the football sort). He will not be attending BBN due to homecoming (remember, these are kids), but will probably make an official visit again very soon. Andrew Wiggins originally was said to be attending BBM, but that may have changed due to a student holiday. He has not yet made his decision on whether to reclassify, but it could come any day. His coach said to us on Thursday that the deadline is for all intents and purposes, the first of November, when the McDonald’s All American ballots go out, as Wiggins will want to be on it if he becomes a 2013 player.

— The other big story is the announcement of a “Hard Knocks” like series about Kentucky basketball on ESPN. I think this will be unbelievably entertaining. John Calipari has given ESPN the rights to follow the team around for the next three weeks, documenting everything that happens in an unfiltered way. The series will run on three straight Wednesdays in October (the 17, 24 and 31) on ESPN and give the program unbelievable exposure and intrigue. It will follow the players and coaches on and off the court and is directed by a director who did films for the ESPN 30 for 30 series. It will be a fascinating look at the program unlike anything we have ever seen and is yet ANOTHER example of how Calipari does it differently (and better) than anyone else.

— Saturday was depressing for a number of reasons, but none more so than the injury to Patrick Towles. One would assume that if he is out for a long period of time, a medical hardship redshirt would be requested and given. But Towles injury also epitomized the “can we catch a break” season so far. His first drive was masterful, going 80 yards on 5-5 passing and showcasing why it is that so many believe he could be the best to come out of this state in recent memory. When you see a Quarterback that can be special, it is obvious and it translates immediately, and that happened with Towles. He generated excitement in an otherwise dead Commonwealth Stadium and had the possibility of belief in everyone’s mind. Then came a freak injury and now we are left not knowing the future. We will know more about his status on Monday, but until then, it will be Jalen Whitlow (who I thought played decently, but was ripped by Randy Sanders afterwards) and one assumes, Morgan Newton as the final resort. Does anyone know if Matt Roark has eligibility left?

— Saturday was very frustrating for a viewer for a variety of reasons, but none more so than the inexplicable play calling throughout the game. Right after Towles impressive 80 yard drive, the Cats came out the next possession and had all momentum deflated by three straight up the middle run calls that were each more frustrating than the one before. Then after the injury, Whitlow was given a limited amount of responsibility, which he handled relatively well when he got outside of the pocket and could make plays. But too often, he was asked to be a drop back passer (which didnt work) and given no chance by play calls that made zero rational sense. It culminated in the final drive for the Cats that saw UK run a draw play on 3rd and 12 that caused more grumbling than I have heard in Commonwealth in a long time. Tack on the decision to not use any timeouts and essentially let the game end on Miss State’s final possession and one wondered if the coaches were just glad to get off the field on Saturday and let the game end.

BIG BLUE MADNESS is Friday, Media Day is Thursday, and the UK Basketball Tipoff Luncheon is Wednesday. So there will be news flowing all week as we get ready for basketball to begin. Keep it here for everything we can talk about, as KSR is coming out like a wounded dog, ready to have a memorable week, starting with radio tomorrow morning at 10. See you there….

Every other serious program would fire their AD after two bad hires. Cutcliffe is a RETREAD!!! just keep joker if we are going after has beens. No young talent wants to play for some old has been. How long does Mitch get a pass for this disaster of a football program? He needs to hold a press conference and tell the fan base exactly what he plans to do to make us a decent program. His arrogance and lack of a personality will most likely prevent this from ever happening.

Cutcliffe would be a horrible long-term hire. Need someone who is going to run the Mike Leach offense as that is the only way UK can ever be competitive in the SEC. As Lonnie Demaree says (he knows way more about football then the chosen one does) UK will NEVER be able to line up and play power football in the SEC so you have to have a gimmick on offense! Forget about hiring someone who will be at UK forever, hire someone who can come in and win and make UK a good stepping stone job. UT, Auburn, Arkansas and Louisville (Strong to Arkansas) are all going to be hiring coaches in the off season so UK needs to do something other then hire another Rich Brooks aka Cutcliffe. Not taking anything away from Brooks because he built a foundation but he never got UK over the hump!

That would be a terrible hire for head coach, that is like John L. Smith at Arkansas. I would take Gus Malzahn of Arkansas State, but don’t bring in a old coach with “zero” drive, I want a hungry up and coming coach that will fire up the players and the fans.

    1) Petrino is the only PROVEN coach that can take a hopeless team, with no recruiting base (ul/Arkansas) and turn it into a top 10 team. End of discussion!

    2) towels one drive did not show any sign of “special”! He had a couple short dump offs and then the worse looking td pass in history (the defender fell and the receiver had to wait on the ball for 5 seconds)! Whitlow was praised as the next coming wk b4 last and now he’s forgotten? Just another ray of sunshine ksr puts up our ass when reality is that uk football sux all the way around!

I hope Barney does hire Cutcliffe. Let him bring Nuttjob, and Phat Phil as assistants. Then when no one buys into THAT (expletives deleted x 1,000) sandwich, we can watch the Athletic Department go into insolvency. And when that happens, the GD’ed Bball boosters will finally get off their ass, and demand Barney not only be fired, but castrated as well.

I can’t even imagine what Petrino would have going with this team, especially the offense, in about 2-3 years. Could be SPECIAL. Even Leach would have an explosive offense in that time. The young talent is there, we just need a coach who can really do something with it. Joker had a Cobb, Locke, Matthews, King and a good SEC QB in Hartline (that year in 2010, he WAS very good) and still could only go 6-6, losing to a dumpster fire, coachless Pitt team in the bowl game. Awful.

Who didn’t see this coming? I’ve been saying this since the UL loss. Barny will hire a retread. He just has absolutely no imagination. He doesn’t realize that it takes a specical kind of hire to succeed at football here at UK. Papa Brooks was a retread too, but Brooks was a good coach with a reputation for running a clean program and we were coming off probation so that hire made sense.

Joker was only retained to have continuity but he immediately fired everyone and ran the program into the ground. GREAT HIRE.

For us to win we either need Petrino or a young up and comer that can recruit and has an exciting style like Malzan.

Hell I’d rather get June Jones than cutcliffe. Talk about a mass exodus, see how many fans abandon this program with that hire. Is he better than Joker? Well every coach in America is better than Joker so thats an easy answer… but cutcliffe will just be another baby sitter. I guess thats all barny wants. Run a clean program… be a yes man. Thats all he requires.

@7- agreed. Its been said by many people, many times, that we cannot compete in SEC football by playing football like the SEC does. I don’t like the term “gimmick” (reminds me of Mumme), but we need a coach who has an exciting style on both sides of the ball. Something that can be sold to recruits, something that makes football fun for them & the fans.

I don’t presume to know who we should hire, but they should have fire and make the game fun. Nothing sums up Joker (to me) better than this; in the Louisville game they scored first, went for 2 & got it. We marched right back down the field & scored. Our rival had just sent us a message on their last possession by going for 2. So what does Joker do? Let’s it kick for 1. I guarantee every player on our team wanted to go for 2 & send a message right back. You can argue playing “smart football” or “playing the odds” all you want. Our most hated rival, Louisville, set a tone with their first possession & we didn’t even try to match it.

#42, actually, going for the two-point conversion on every score would be “smart football,” statistically speaking. Or, at least, that is what I heard an MIT mathematician say. I haven’t seen the numbers, though.

Cutcliffe would be par for the course for Mitch, but I hope to God that he doesn’t go this route. I believe that there is a enough pressure to make a home run hire, that he wouldn’t be so stupid…but then again, I’m not sure Mitch’s ego would allow him to bring Petrino in. At any rate, Barnhart has to know that if he f’s this hire up, his own job could be in jeopardy.

Cutcliffe is exactly the kind of ho-hum, lazy-ass hire Barney would probably make. Mitch is using his new favorite mouthpiece to put the idea out there that UK fans actually WANT the guy. There has been no discussion in any UK circle I’m apart of about Cutcliffe – until now. If this is the best Barney can come up with, you might as well forget about being competitive in football. UK’s only hope is Mitch getting his walking papers the same day as JOKEr.

Cutcliff can win at Uk. If Patrino turns the job down Cutcliff will get the job. His offence will score about 30 a game. He will put as about mid pack in the SEC. In the end good off. Bowl every year and win about 7 a year. That will be good enough. I think it’s a no brainier IF Patrino turns the job down.

  52. UKGrad04

What’s with crucifying MB over a hire he hasn’t even made yet? The wants of the fan base are as varied as they are ill-informed, so short of Gruden or Tony Dungy, there is going to be a large–and ignorant–segment of the fan base that’s angry. Why don’t we let the season play out, then if there is a change, let the process play out?

I agree with #7 on every point except one. It is possible to play power football at Kentucky. WKU has done it to us every time they’ve played us, and we ‘posed to be SEC. Power football is as much attitude and scheme as it is a hat on a hat. There are also several ways to play it. For instance, if you have speed on the outside (which we have in spades), and a good QB (hopefully Towles in the future) you can spread a defense out and ram it down their throat while they’re playing nickel or dime because they have to respect the vertical game.

But our goal should absolutely be to position ourselves as a stepping stone school and hope a coach eventually sticks. The only way that happens is with a major facilities upgrade, and I mean MAJOR. This isn’t news, but it’s the only way, and until then it means giving a ton of money to a coach who can ride it out. Personally, I’d love to see Taggart, but I don’t think he’ll come. There are also rumblings of James Franklin not being happy at Vandy b/c they’re giving him the Rich Rodriguez-WVU treatment a la broken promises in terms of facilities funding. Still, I think at best, Franklin would do nothing more than leverage UK into forcing Vandy’s hand, and the best we can hope for is that they’ll still say no, they’re not dipping into their general fund b/c their focus is squarely on academics.

So, bottom line, Mitch is in an unenviable position, and based on the upward trajectory of the rest of the athletic program, I’m willing to give him a lot more wiggle room here.

Cutcliff would not leave Duke for anyone. He loves it there because there are no expectations. Speaking of no expectations, UK wants to be just like Duke which is to do as little as possible in exchange for as much conference bowl revenue as they (we) can get. Blame Barnhart all you want, it is the University of Kentucky Administration from the top down. A financial boycott is the only thing that UK will understand along with the empty seats which TV tries unsuccessfully to hide.

No on Cutcliffe. No offense to the gentlemen but I’d rather UK hire either Petrino or a young up and coming guy with a huge chip on his shoulder, a surplus of confidence, maybe a little arrogant and who wants to run his guys til they puke, make them lift until they can throw boulders and who wants to hit the other team so hard that the opposition would rather fall into a fiery abyss than walk into Commonwealth Stadium.

I’m tired of nice guy football coaches. I want UK to hire a guy who hates losing and wants to smash the face of the opposition.

Get UK Football a young Nick Saban or a young Steve Spurrier.

If UK can’t out talent the opposition, let the team out hustle, out lift, out hit…and scare the hell out of the talented prima donnas of the rest of the SEC.

No team that gets pushed around like Kentucky does will ever win at Football. Especially in the SEC.

Cutcliffe is a great coach who knows the SEC inside and out and wouldn’t be a bad hire. That said, he just lacks the buzz and energy that UK fans want in the program. Rich Brooks is a solid comparison and while I think he would get us back to playing bowl games, Cutcliffe would also drive UK fans crazy. The comment someone made about Cutcliffe being lazy isn’t true, but I can see the perception because listening to Cutcliffe is a lot like listening to your grandpa.

One more thing…..I don’t have a problem if Cutcliffe is on Mitch’s list, I just hope he is option 6, 7, or 8 after several others have said no. A guy like Cutcliffe should only be approached if we can’t land any of our top targets.

To know that we could have Jim freakin Tressel as our coach and not grab him up, even if only for 2 years or so would be a big mistake. Are we really too good for a 2 time National Champion? Why? The thought of Cutcliffe makes me a litle sick to my stomach. Ole Miss fired him for a reason. Basically has proven he can’t win in a Kentucky like program(unless he can find another Super Bowl MVP). I’m hoping for an exciting and controversial hire as I plan to get 2 more season tickets next year. Hire someone like Cutcliffe and I’ll drop season tickets altogether. duke starts off good this year and all of a sudden we’re banging the drum for their coach. vandy won six games last year and i heard a lot of fans wanting us to go after franklin. so what has vandy done this year? i haven’t heard anyone campaigning for franklin lately. and petrino may be a good coach but as long as that picture of him with the neck brace and the pavement rash all over his face is in existence, how could we ever take him seriously?

You people have this weird sense of entitlement about this Football team. We SUCK. We have been shitty for literally 50 years. No big name coach would EVER coach here unless he’s on probation or an POS like Petrino. Who by the way, will get MUCH MUCH better job offers than UK. We aren’t good enough for flippin Bobby Petrino. 79- Vandy’s 3 losses this year all came against ranked teams. 2 of which were top-10.

Besides that, Vandy has an SEC road win under their belt and 2 wins on the season. Uk has played a weaker schedule than Vandy and has fared worse at 1-5.

87- again, why does Joker get 3-4 years to prove he can win but Franklin is bashed in only his second year at Vandy with a team he had no hand in creating, unlike Joker? Steady and obvious improvement from Vandy almost every game since Franklin has been there. To deny that is just jealousy or pure homerism. I think the verdict is still out on Franklin, but you can’t deny the mark he’s already left on that bottom-dwelling program.

Folks, I understand the desire to see a high flying offense. Names like Leach and Malzahn are sexy and will probably put a few butts in seats initially. However, you aren’t gonna win SEC football games based on offense. Oregon probably has the best offense in the country and they have gotten spanked the last two times they played SEC teams. Good defense will beat good offense every time. UK needs someone like Lorenzo Ward, defensive coordinator at South Carolina. He is young, tough, full of enthusiasm, and obviously knows defense. Defense may not be glamorous, but it wins games. Bring in someone like Mike Ayers from Wofford (they put up 82 points earlier this year) to run the offense and move forward.

The angry and uninformed section of our fan-base has officially reached the point where they would hire Vlad The Impaler and allow him to sacrifice children during halftime on the 50 yd line, if it mean’t we would win in the SEC. Anyone who thinks that a major name is coming anytime soon is sadly mistaken. The uninformed masses feel that you can just throw a large amount of money out there and every coach in America will come running.

Even if Mitch hired Petrino, if something went wrong all the “smart” fans would be calling for Mitch’s head and screaming about how everyone knew the hire was bad from the start.

Anyone tat thinks Tressel would even be considered is missing a few marbles.

On December 20, 2011 the NCAA placed Ohio State on an additional one year’s probation and banned it from postseason play in 2012 for numerous major violations under Tressel’s watch. It also imposed a five-year show-cause penalty on Tressel, which means any NCAA member that wants to hire him would have to “show cause” for why it shouldn’t be sanctioned for hiring him, and could face severe penalties if he commits any further violations during that time. The order stands until December 19, 2016; given past precedent, it will likely have the effect of blackballing Tressel from the coaching ranks until the 2017 season. If Tressel ever coaches again during this period, he will be suspended for the first five games of the regular season, plus any conference championship game or bowl game. The NCAA came down particularly hard on Tressel because he’d had four chances to tell the truth and failed to do so. Among other things, he claimed that he didn’t come forward because he believed doing so would jeopardize a federal drug investigation involving Rife
