Cats are “in the driver’s seat” with Dakari Johnson

Last night, Drew told you that Dakari Johnson, the third ranked player in the ESPN 60 for 2014, reclassified to 2013. Johnson, a 6’10” center from Montverde Academy in Florida, is considering Kentucky, Florida, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Ohio State, Syracuse, and Villanova. USA Today’s Jason Jordan tweeted this morning that he thinks the Cats are “in the driver’s seat.” Are we looking at Kentucky’s next big man?

Watch him work (replaced with a better mixtape):

Am I having deja vu? I feel like this was said just a couple posts down. I imagine we will see it again in 2-3 more posts today. Great work

He is a big man but from the video he can’t finish well around the rim

This kid can’t jump at all. I’d rather have Forwards that play above the rim.

I’m sure he’s very good, but that mix tape was awful.

This is quite possibly the worst highlight video I’ve ever seen…he missed more than he made, and he is 7 feet tall and can’t touch the rim…I’m hoping thsi was made like 4 years ago before he developed…

6′ 10″ with not a single dunk in his highlights and 4 or more free throws lol. I won’t doubt cal but this video isn’t very flattering

Are we to assume that since we are in the “driver’s seat” with him that we aren’t to expect J. Randle at UK? Who would we rather have?

  13. Jezz
    10:21 am November 6, 2012 Permalink

    Cool.

Could we also be in the driver’s seat with Julius Randle please ? And Andrew Wiggins ?

Is that too much to ask ?

Are we sucking that bad at football because karma is making us win 3 basketball championships in a row ?

    So many questions.

Remember to look at how many people we might have leave after this year, no matter if he is only mediocre, we could use the depth (not necessarily the talent) for 2013-2014. If everyone leaves who could leave, uk could only return Jon Hood as far as non-walkons. The more the merry. And if you watch other tapes of him he is better, not quick, but a very solid post presence.

Terrible mixtape, for sure. But, the traditional back to the basket big man is the one piece we’re missing from the 2013 class. With Cauley-Stein possibly leaving for NBA this spring, we’ll be in need of a big guy. I say sign him up!

Looks like he is a hard worker, reminds me of Sullinger of Ohio St., he is a big that works below the rim but has good moves and will get in better shape under Cal. Remember TJones was also a under the rim guy and was a good player for us at UK when motivated.

Getting Dakarai and J. Randle aren’t mutually exclusive. Dakarai more traditional Center, J. Randle is a power foward.

Damn i hope he stays in school, cant jump never seen a strong dunk from him, i see him getting his shot blocked alot, looks more a guy who can rebound and get a few garbage points, he needs to stay that extra yr in school or go elsewhere, he would get eaten alive by Ky s big men.

  21. bigredbleedsblue
    10:32 am November 6, 2012 Permalink

He’ll be the #1 center in the class. That would give us the #1 point, shooting guard and center. As well as the #2 shooting guard, and possible two or three of the best forwards in the whole country! Yeah, I’ll take the kid.

    James Young (SG/SF)

    Ryan Harrow (PG)

    Smells like victory…

    17) Yeah the driver’s seat. He’s along for the ride, and we’re not sure if we’re going to take him home, or drop him off at Rick Pitino’s house. We’re behind the wheel though.

Why don’t you guys do an in depth post comparing the UK FB Coach search to Presidential elections? There are fascinating parallels. Hire/elect a candidate, watch him struggle for 4 years to unlock the quagmire that is Washington DC/Commonwealth Stadium, blame him for all the woes of the country/fb program, vote him out/fire him, fill the position again, wait about 2 years for apathy/disgruntlement to set in, and then fire/vote again. (This year Obama=Joker, Mitt=Fulmer). Similarities are scary.

TTT, thanks for changing the video. This one is much more representative of his game. With the players outlined above by AaronJ, then we don’t need an uber-athletic, above-the-rim big man. Dakarai kinda reminds me of Nazr, and I love me some Nazr.

Would love to get him, but I imagine he’ll hold off on a verbal or anything if he wants to come here. If WCS plays in the regular season the way he’s been playing, he’ll be one and done. If for some reason he doesn’t, Dakari would then be competing against both WCS and Lee at the 5 next year (assuming we have Randle or Gordon at the 4).

Silky is a LOAD on the block – straight-up space eater. I’ve watched him play countless times in person and the kid knows how to throw his weight around and position himself in the paint. He has great hands, an advanced back-to-the-basket game for his age and mops up second-chance points around the basket through his box-out ability and soft touch. He uses the backboard about as well as any high school big since Duncan. He may be a bit slow and lacks the athleticism of a Noel or WCS, but he lives up to the nickname of being silky smooth. Kid prefers laying it off the glass rather than hammering it home, but that doesn’t mean he’s soft or doesn’t go hard. Dakari has a mean streak in him. I’d welcome him with open arms at Kentucky.

I don’t claim to know anything about this guy, but I seem to recall another big man who played for UK recently and couldn’t jump over a phone book. I think his name was … Cousins? Pretty sure he turned out OK.

he reminds me of demarcus cousins. however, i notice he is a little o the slow side and his jumping ability seems to be a little bit of a down side as well. maybe he was hurt? maybe he wasn’t trying?
