Cross Leach off your lists

Ally came though earlier and reported on the latest Mike Leach fiasco, but now Matt has dropped a little knowledge on the UK’s perspective of Leach via twitter. While it would have certainly been fun and exciting to see Leach at UK, his antics and coaching style have really complicated things. Check it:

Kentucky’s outlook here is totally reasonable — no abuse chances can be taken after Billy G, just like no NCAA violation chances can be taken with the basketball program, hence the incredibly close eye Sandy Bell keeps on every move made just to ensure the rules are followed. For UK to land a killer football coach and break through the success barrier in the SEC, we’re going to have to take a chance, but just not on potential abuse.

What decision is there to be made??? PETRINO!!! We won’t ever get the chance to hire a big time football coach like he is again. Let’s get this done please.

“just like no NCAA violation chances can be taken with the basketball program”

Actually, we hired a coach that did have NCAA violations in his past (or his programs had violations). A proper analogy is that if we hire him, there would be significant oversight as to how he ran practice.

    Regardless, Petrino is the hire.

Why all this talk about Mike Leach. This is NOT a signature hire…nor is Pease or Brown or Dykes. The obvious choice is Petrino. This is a signature hire. SOMEONE is going to hire him…AND they are going to win. ARE YOU LISTENING MITCH? Its also time for KSR to stand up and say it as well. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

This is all we talk about in my barber shop. The barber shop pole (poll), says hire Petrino…and the Barber Shop Pole (POLL) is NEVER wrong. So there you are!

Mitch is just trying to justify hiring Cutcliffe. There is absolutely no reason to believe Leach was being looked at by the athletics department. To act like Leach was someone being seriously vetted is silly. (No candidates announced, except one who was disqualified?) But Mitch is ready to interview apparently. OK. Who else is being looked at Mr Jones?

It was very good to read some of the clarifications about the Atlanta & UL situations in regards to Petrino. It alleviates some of my misgivings about him. The main obstacle for me is that, if hired, he does not place the university in a position where it has to defend itself in myriad lawsuits. As I stated in a previous post, if he is hired as our new HFC I will support him. I have to admit I would love to see our team with an exciting offensive display every week and Petrino is a genius in that regard.

I have prayed on it and God told me to hire Cutcliffe or Fulmer. Oh, and on an unrelated note I have approved the spending of 50 million dollars on a new woman’s four square arena and new spears for the woman’s spear chucking team. I am proud to say we will be competitive in these sports for a long time.

“we’re going to have to take a chance”
Love it. I may be reading things wrong, but with everything being posted at various places today, it looks more and more like Petrino may at least get an offer. From Joe B explaining behind the scenes info, to KSR finally talking about taking a chance (with someone with baggage I assume) it’s looking more likely that UK may actually go for the homerun hire.

#14: I’m sure the fact that Joe B’s son-in-law worked on Petrino’s staff wouldn’t color Joe B’s opinion….right? Petrino is bad news. His last 3 coaching jobs have ended in disaster with the programs/organizations he left behind hating him. Mitch should look elsewhere.

Why is anyone talking Leach?!? That ship sailed last year. What, Barnhart is going to pass on him last year when he could have been a bargain so he can wait a year and have to pay a buyout after his yr 1? That’s ridiculous.

Anyway, there’s a better coach, avail now below his mkt value and he CAN recruit the best Louisville schools:

    Hire Petrino.

    16) I guess Joe B. just went out and told lies about all of that stuff? Petrino is not without personal flaws, but he has proven good morals are not a requirement to win football games. Last time I checked UK was looking for a football coach, not a deacon for the church. His two college jobs ended with me having even more faith on him being the man for the job. Both schools instantly went from top 10 programs to horrible. Shows you just how good of a coach he is.

I know Matt liked Leach, but I really didn’t think we would even look this way. Leach would have been good last year, but now he is in the first year with a team and would have to include a buyout. Still not seen anything with what came out on Leach today to crucify him. It’s normal for players to have disagreements with new coaches. Look how many players left the program when Joker took over for Brooks, and Joker was already a coach here. I’m sure Leach is a hard a&&, but the big abuse story he had at Tech was proven to be a lie. Don’t see anything in this story to link him to BCG status.

Don’t think he is the homerun hire this year though. Unless something blows up BCG style, Leach will turn it around at WSU and land a bigger job in 3 or 4 years.

Point is, that ship sailed. Now it doesn’t matter. If UK is not already very seriously looking at Petrino then this coaching search may already be doomed.

Petrino isn’t the only coach who can help put the program at a winning level. He is attractive because he’s proven he can win at the SEC level. But, there are other coaches who can win and it’s foolish to eliminate them from consideration because of an infatuation with one. Mitch has to decide if Petrino is a changed person or whether the same issues would come up at UK if he is hired.

Bob- because of Tressels violations at Ohio St., the NCAA has the right to come in and investigate every sport in the athletic dept. at the school that hires him. No school wants the NCAA digging in their yard, which is why I think he’ll have a harder time getting a job until the penalty expires.

I!m not in the dumbass 10% club, but I think UK really needs to get this hire right. The program is at the crossroads of crossing down into the abyss. It needs 100% backing from the administration down to the fans. It needs stability from whoever UK hires. Given Petrino’s trend, who says he wouldn’t leave Kentucky after a year.. Then we are are back to square one again and the program is further decimated.. He’s a good coach but not reliable and that’s what the program desperately needs in a coach. See Lane Kiflin and Tennessee’s program now..

Mitch is a fool to not make a huge run at Petrino. I originally thought the piece by his dad was to leverage the other SEC schools but I don’t believe that is the case as they’d be just as big of fools as us for not hiring him. I believe now that he truly does want to be in Kentucky. Of course, I’ve no sources, purely gut instinct but believe Joe B knows what’s up. Mitch needs to get him to package a recruiting class (like Cal), contractually strap him down and let the passionate fanbase in America to convince him to stay. I find myself checking the site repeatedly, to finally see that this is done. I also don’t believe the fanbase is as divided as is being reported.
