Courier Journal Reporter and UK O-Line Coach Have Heated Words

kyle

You probably don’t yet know the man with the spiky hair above, but Kyle Tucker is his name and reporting is his game. He is the new UK beat writer for the Louisville Courier Journal and he comes to Lexington having worked a similar gig following Virginia Tech. I have only met Kyle once and he seems like a good guy with excellent hair (he has eschewed the spiky ensemble above for a more free flowing look…think Oscar Combs during Woodstock). While his time in Lexington thus far has been short, he is already making an impact on the UK scene. According to Alan Cutler’s best source (aka his mustache), Tucker and UK Offensive Line Coach Mike Summers were “going at it” at practice today during the media session. Cutler wrote that Summers didn’t like Tucker’s line of questioning concerning the offensive line performance against Western Kentucky and the two were apparently “testy.”

I admit that I am somewhat surprised that Cutler broke the Reporter Omerta that has for so long been prevalent the UK media world. When KSR first started attending UK media functions, we would tell the inner UK media secrets (aka Tipton always asks the first question, Cutler interrupts, Vaught wears Jacob Tamme jerseys, Gabriel’s goatee has a mind of its own, Matt May refuses to look anyone directly in the eyes, John Clay sits by the door in case there is a restroom emergency…you know the important stuff), but we were shunned for revealing these important factoids. But now Cutler is putting front and center a dispute between a new young reporter on the scene and the veteran Offensive Line coach in the trenches. Such disputes aren’t common, but they do happen…it just normally never gets talked about. Now our friend Alan has become a trailblazer, seeking to be this generation’s Perez Hilton, all the while giving the UK writer gossip in the most Cutleresque manner possible.

He sounds like a breath of fresh air. Someone needs to ask tough (unfair?) questions that make these coaches squirm. I hate the typical B.S. you hear in those pressers.

Personally, I think Tucker has been doing a great job at the C-J since taking over for Dawson. I am getting a lot more information re: the football team from his articles.

Listen Blue Goose…I dont know if you have ever been to a UK football practice, but if you get enough equipment up there, the stage freight can be quite heavy.

I’ve pretty much stopped reading the Courier Urinal since the advent of the internet age, so it matters little to me what they say or who writes for them. They’re little more than stenographers for the U of L Sports Info Department anyway.

The amount of errors in Cutler’s blog posts is staggering considering it comes from a professional journalist. There are many more besides “stage freight”. Geez.

    Central Michigan: 31
    Kentucky: 6

Yeah, Kentucky sucks. I love them, but the truth is the truth and sometimes it hurts. Morgan Newton is not even half the QB Mossakowski would have been. Gonna be a long (2-10) season in the bluegrass. But at least Joker will get fired at season’s end and we’ll hire another Hal Mumme.

Hal Mumme and Tim Couch not that was fun football. Sorry but fell asleep watching Ky/WKU game.

Like the new beat writer. The OLINE was a disgrace and this is coming from one of the biggest UK football homers you will find.

Kyle puts out good articles, but he burned a lot of bridges in Blacksburg doing the same thing it seems he’s starting at UK. He got put on hush mode from many of the VT folks once he intentionally went prematurely public with a couple of things our staff wanted him to wait on releasing, namely the hire of a new assistant coach. As time went on in Blacksburg, he got increasingly bitter, particularly on his Twitter feed, and likely because he was frustrated with the lack of info the staff would spoon feed him (And after his stunts, who could blame them, really?). Also, he would lift info from our Rivals site (HokieHaven) and “break” the news on his Twitter without claiming a source. Don’t know y’all’s issues as I don’t follow UK sports, but keep an eye on this; it should be fun to watch.

And FYI: Kyle’s a WKU alum.

I don’t know much about this guy, I only read one of his last articles on the VT beat where he was saying his goodbye’s (the comment section was less positive than BTI’s), but the part where he mentioned that Pat Forde was a close friend of his did catch my attention.

Kyle Tucker is from Tennessee – Probably a Volfan. Plus he worked for the same rag in WV that Tipton came from.

That’s why the Courier-Jurich hired him to be the UK beat writer.

20, good point, but I’m not a professional journalist, and this is just a follow up in the comments section. Had I put this out on a tv news website I would have spent more time snooping for mistakes and would hope the organization I worked for would insist that I do this as well and/or provide someone to proof the releases… You are right about the typo however.

Matt, your arguement this morning that UK can never win in football has a flaw. Before someone can say something can not be done. First, you should prepare and proform to your maximum ability. No one that has watched UK’s football team the last 2 years can say they have done that, they can play better then they have.

Interesting read. So O-line coach whose unit has been praised all summer as the strength of the team and possbility the best in the SEC doesn’t like a reporter’s line of questioning after his unit’s pathetic performance against a supposed inferior Western Kentucky team? Too bad. Better grow some thick skin coach. Or get your unit to play up to its supposed capabilities. And L-Rod King doesn’t care what the fans think after he and his receiving corps comrades sucked against Western? Too bad. Start playing like you deserve to be in the SEC then. Lose to Louisville and you won’t have to worry about hearing from us fans the rest of the season. I’m sure Commonwealth is a much easier venue to catch passes in when it’s empty.
